1 The Asian Modern © John Clark, 2013 Raden Saleh (1811-1880), Dutch Indies now Indonesia Apart from other writings, the principal understanding of Raden Saleh has been accomplished by Werner Kraus working chiefly on Indonesian and German sources, and Marie-Odette Scalliet, working on Indonesia and French sources as well as archival documents in Dutch from the court and other government archives in Den Haag. These include the secret briefing reports to the King. Modern knowledge about Raden Saleh, rather than hearsay commentary on handed down rumours, is almost entirely due to their efforts, and much of what follows would have been impossible without their work and the directions for inquiry indicated by it. Daniek Intan | Fotografi di Hindia Belanda 121 Fotografi di Hindia Belanda Daniek Intan Mahasiswa S1 Jurusan Sejarah Universitas Gadjah Mada Abstract This research analyses photography in the Netherlands Indies since the mid-19th century and its development until the early 20th century. The rise of photography in the Netherlands Indies as part of its modernization, is not merely the development of the arts, but photography was also used to explore the colonial territory of the colonial government. European photographers were sent to document archeological artefacts in various expeditions in several places in the archipelago. Photography also began to be commercialized. European, Chinese and even indigenous photographers arose with their photo studios. They have produced a natural and anthropological landscape of the Netherlands Indies, from Europeans and indigenous people living there. The commercialization of photography expanded with a variety of photo subjects, sold to other parts of the world in the form of albums, souvenirs or postcards. This answered the curiosity of the outside world on the Netherlands Indies as a colonial area. Key words: photography, Netherlands Indies, photographer, exploration, commercial, photo studio, landscape and portrait. Abstrak Penelitian ini mengulas mengenai fotografi di Hindia Belanda sejak medio abad ke-19, sampai perkembangannya hingga awal abad ke-20. Kehadiran fotografi di Hindia Belanda sebagai bagian dari modernitas, tidak hanya menggambarkan seni semata, namun fotografi juga digunakan untuk eksplorasi daerah koloni oleh pemerintah kolonial. Datanglah para fotografer Eropa yang diperintahkan untuk mendokumentasikan benda-benda arkeologis, maupun ikut serta dalam ekspedisi di beberapa tempat di Nusantara. Tidak hanya itu, fotografi selanjutnya berkembang ke arah komersial. -

FROM LANKA EASTWARDS From Lanka Eastwards Lanka From The Ramayana in the Literature and Visual Arts of Indonesia FROM LANKA EASTWARDS The Ramayana in the Literature and Visual Arts of Indonesia The Ramayana in the Literature and Visual Arts of Indonesia The Kakawin Ramayana, arguably the oldest Old Javanese epic text in Indic metres (circa 9th century AD), holds a unique position in the literary heritage of Indonesia. The poem has retained a remarkable vitality through the centuries in the Archipelago, inspiring many forms of artistic expression not only in the domain of literature but also in the visual and performing arts, from the reliefs of the majestic Central Javanese temples to modern puppet-show performances. Displaying a virtuoso array of metrical patterns, the Kakawin Ramayana is among the very few Old Javanese texts for which a specific Sanskrit prototype has been identified, namely the difficult poem Bhattikavya (circa 7th century AD), itself a version of the great Ramayana epic ascribed to Valmiki (circa 6th–1st century BC). The Old Javanese poem is an original and skillful work of re-elaboration that documents a fascinating interaction between cultural elements of the Sanskritic tradition with those indigenous to the Javanese setting. The studies included in this volume, written by experts in a wide range of disciplines, focus on disparate aspects of the Kakawin Ramayana and the constellation of cultural phenomena revolving around it, providing the reader with a key to the understanding of the rich Old Javanese textual heritage and the transcultural intellectual dynamics that contributed to shaping the cultural heritage of Indonesia up to the present. -

Berbagai peristiwa konflik dan kekerasan atas nama agama dan kelompok etnis (SARA) kerap terjadi. Begitu juga tawuran dan kerusuhan antar warga masyarakat, antar kelompok, supporter grup sepak bola dan antar para pelajar sering mudah terjadi tanpa diketahui penyebab sebenarnya secara utuh dan dapat diketemukan solusi rekonsiliasinya secara permanen dan substansial dalam format rekonstruksi dan restorasi kebudayaan. Berbagai potensi konflik SARA yang sudah kerap terjadi di berbagai daerah di Indonesia, tak terkecuali di Propinsi Jawa Barat sebagai lingkungan terdekat Ibukota Jakarta, tentunya perlu diteliti secara mendalam, komprehensif dan holistik. Dengan demikian maka solusi dan resolusi konflik serta rekonsiliasi kerukunannya dapat dilakukan secara tepat dan benar, sesuai dengan cita-cita dan prinsip nilai luhur yang terkandung dalam Pancasila dan doktrin: ―Bhineka Tunggal Ika‖, ―Tan Hanna Dharma Mangrwa‖ (Tidak ada Kebenaran yang mendua). -

Frederick This thesis is a case study of photographic representations found in the photo albums of Java’s sugar industry. The photographs constitute evidence of the colony‘s industrialization as much as of the development of non-Western photography practice, which both legitimize colonialism by the application of science and technology. By looking at the material I explore the connection between the sugar industry and photography in order to shed new light in both areas. In chapter 1 and 2, I introduce the historical context of the colonial sugar industry and the colonial photography practice in Java.
