A pleasing trade with all types well bid for. A nice run of yearling steers from B&SE Carter, Elle sold to £1095 with others to £1080 while S Hill, Beaumont Grange topped the days sale at £1230 with a marvellous run of cattle averaging £1154. Stronger end cattle in general either side of £1000 with better kinds £1100.-£1200. Grazing types and heifers £750-£900 depending on quality with smarter butcher heifers £990-£1090. Strongest B+W’s £800-£880 with trade in general around £700. Tuesday 5th May 2020 CAST COWS - 42 FORWARD B + W to £906.75 from E & NJ Johnson or 134p from J & M Whitfield & Sons CTL to £1033.60 or 156p from W P Sutcliffe Auctioneer’s Report (Stephen Dennis): The best show of Cows for sometime and a flying trade as well. Plenty of Beef x Cows between 130p-150p topping at 156pkg from Philip Sutcliffe who also grossed £1033.50 for a 680kg Limousin at 152pkg. B+W Cows up to 125pkg from Richard & Iain Wilcock but no real best cows forward. Grazing types 100- 110pkg. A handful of plain cows 82p-95pkg. Competition for Blue heifers as cow replacements was fierce, with several calves in the £300’s, topping at £355 from Malcolm & Jo Fell, who’s run of 9 averaged £330. The Fell’s also topped the Blue bulls along with Andrew Dawson at £365, again plenty of calves in the £300’s, medium sorts in the late £200’s. A run of young continental calves, 15-25 days look well sold either side of £200. Best Natives to £290 from Brian Barnes, others £190-£240. Heifers to £205 for Angus’ from John & Brian Lawson other younger sorts £160-£190. Dairy bulls well sort after, Montbelliarde £175-£190 peaking at £250. Fleckvieh bulls to a top of £290 twice from Brian Barnes, others £220-£275 with some younger sorts £140-£150. A nice continental shearling with twins sold to £250 from Joe and Sam Gorst, Killington with Texels to £180 for singles from C R Alderson, Mallerstang. In general Mules with twins around £180 with plainer sorts £150-£160. The hogg and lamb sale, all be it different to usual, got off to a good start with a run of homebred continentals from D&R Cornthwaite, Lockerbie selling to £220 twice. The section was topped at £240 from locals Frank and Sue Towers. Continental Hoggs in strong demand and short of requirements with trade in general £210-£220. A mixed show of quality in the Mule section, without a doubt a highlight of the sale being a wonderful run of homebred Hoggs with strong Suffolk lambs at foot from A R Edmond- son, Hawkswell selling to £220 averaging £200 for the run. Best Mule hoggs in general either side of £200 with the next draw down £180-£190. Commercial sorts around £160 and looking well sold. Next special sale for Hoggs with lambs is the Annual Whitsuntide Sale to be held Wednesday 27th May with entries invited. Thank you. The May sale of Hoggs with Lambs has been one of the highlights of the auction calendar giving vendors the opportunity to take pride in showing their stock which sadly under present protocol is not allowed. A big thank you to those vendors who adhered to the drop and go policy without complaint making it possible for live sales to continue. Vendors are reminded to have both an ARAMS Sheep License and both parts of the new Sheep and Lamb entry form completed PRIOR to arrival at the market. The nights dale was topped at £141.50 for Texels from East Mains with nicer ewes in general £120-£140. Good selling lean types £90-£110. Mule ewes around £10 dearer on the week with lean types around £75. Horned ewes of all classes good to sell with best fleshy types £70-£80 with a few pens around £85. Medium types £50+ with plain in the £40’s. Best Rams £100-£119 with plain £80-£90. HOGGS More hoggs forward with very much a mixed show on offer with some proper tail end sorts as well as some nice consignments of travelled fed sheep. Handy-weight hoggs in strong demand with plenty pens often between 220p-240p with nicer sorts 250p-265p topping at 268.3p or £110 from RL&AR Philips, Fir Trees. Hoggs around 50kg often £102-£105 with butcher sorts either side of £110 topping at £112 from P&S Mellor. Best fleshy horned hoggs 200p-215p with lesser types 180p-190p. Handy weight Mules 185p-200p with heavies £88-£93.

    EBLEX Report: Analysis of “Breed of Dam” for cattle recorded with BCMS 2003-2013 Samuel Boon, EBLEX, May 2014 (Version 1) Introduction The breed makeup of the nation’s suckler cows influences not just the beef produced and sold to consumers, but also the productivity and ultimately profitability of those farming systems in which cattle are born and reared. EBLEX asked the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) for a breakdown of the dams of calves recorded on the database on the basis of their breed. BCMS is part of the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) It is recognised that an analysis of this type of farmer derived data has some limitations. Where crossbreeding arises there is a tendency for the most valuable breed to be reported on the passport. This approach would favour the reporting of certain beef breeds – which may only account for 50% of the genetic makeup of the suckler cow. In the reporting of dairy breeds similar bias may arise. However, this is a large dataset and for the most part recording protocols have remained consistent over time so relative change over the last decade is still relevant to those interested in assessing which breeds and crosses are influencing the UK beef supply. Methodology BCMS data relates to passport applications received for live and dead animals born in Great Britain. Imported cattle are excluded from the data. Cows producing twins or calving twice within the year will be counted more than once. BCMS report 239 different breed codes. It is understood that these codes/breed types are determined by Breed Societies.

Mr Clifford Fox and Family have been farming at Kernick Farm in Luxulyan for over 70 years. A decision has been made to cease dairy farming and the herd will be removed to Holsworthy Livestock Market and sold at 11am on Wednesday 26th February for convenience of sale. This homebred herd is farmed on a low input system. The Cows are fed clamp grass silage in ring feeders throughout the winter and limited concentrates in the parlour only. The Cows are cubicle housed and herringbone parlour milked. No vaccinations have been used. Ubro Red is used at drying off. The herd was TB tested on 3rd February 2020. Latest milk test sample: 3.72%BF 2.90%PTN cc167 All cows are running with a young Simmental x Stock Bull.

    BAKEWELL MARKET Monday 13th May Another full house at Bakewell with 980 Cattle and 1,802 Sheep on offer. A massive entry of 669 Store and Breeding Cattle resulted in the entry list being halted to ensure that we did not exceed the Market’s capacity. The opportunity to bid at such a large volume of Cattle attracted buyers from far and wide and generated an exceedingly strong trade. Steers sold to £1,320, Heifers £1,275 and Feeding Bulls £1,070. In the Breeding section there were plenty of bidders for all the varied selection on offer with Cows & Calves to £1,280 and very brisk competition for two Blonde Stock Bulls making £2,250 and £2,200. After last week’s lecture on handling Spring Lambs carefully, we have another topic to raise, we have had too many Store Heifers turning up in-calf in bunches of Feeding Cattle. It is clear that Heifers can become pregnant at unfeasibly young ages. So please keep Bulls and Heifers separate to prevent such problems and do not forget given even half a chance “Boys will be Boys” A good show of 133 Finished Cattle sold on a solid trade with the best on offer to 230p and £1,551. In the OTM and Feeding Cow Section a better turnout of 130 head with trade particularly strong. Top figures 179p and £1,396 with the overall average looking good at 125.1p. Calf numbers steady at 48, but decent prices with Bulls to £420 and Heifers £340. In the Sheep department Spring Lambs numbers are starting to build with 342 this week.
