BAKEWELL MARKET Monday 13th May Another full house at Bakewell with 980 Cattle and 1,802 Sheep on offer. A massive entry of 669 Store and Breeding Cattle resulted in the entry list being halted to ensure that we did not exceed the Market’s capacity. The opportunity to bid at such a large volume of Cattle attracted buyers from far and wide and generated an exceedingly strong trade. Steers sold to £1,320, Heifers £1,275 and Feeding Bulls £1,070. In the Breeding section there were plenty of bidders for all the varied selection on offer with Cows & Calves to £1,280 and very brisk competition for two Blonde Stock Bulls making £2,250 and £2,200. After last week’s lecture on handling Spring Lambs carefully, we have another topic to raise, we have had too many Store Heifers turning up in-calf in bunches of Feeding Cattle. It is clear that Heifers can become pregnant at unfeasibly young ages. So please keep Bulls and Heifers separate to prevent such problems and do not forget given even half a chance “Boys will be Boys” A good show of 133 Finished Cattle sold on a solid trade with the best on offer to 230p and £1,551. In the OTM and Feeding Cow Section a better turnout of 130 head with trade particularly strong. Top figures 179p and £1,396 with the overall average looking good at 125.1p. Calf numbers steady at 48, but decent prices with Bulls to £420 and Heifers £340. In the Sheep department Spring Lambs numbers are starting to build with 342 this week. Top figures 314p and £132.38 per head. The SQQ a respectable 223.3p. Still a reasonable number of Hoggs about at 701 with the best on offer to 258p and £133.38, the SQQ at 223.3p Finally, a substantial 601 Cull Sheep Ewes to £120 with a decent average £69.91. Forthcoming Events Thursday 16th May: Thursday Lunchtime Sheep Sale Saturday 18th May: Dispersal Sale at Henhurst Fields, Burton On Trent, to include 27 Vintage and Classic Tractors Monday 20th May: Business as Usual DON’T FORGET Tuesday 28th May BANK HOLIDAY MARKET 130 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS – overall average 125.1p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles) A very good entry of 130 Barren Cows this week and some good quality on offer with more ex Suckler Cows on offer, some of which were in very good order. Trade peaked at 179p for a young Limousin Cow (1 Calf) for GG & OM Carthy, with a couple of super Cows from Roger White at 174 and 172p. Plenty of feeders about today with 63 Cows being retained and fed further by an army of buyers around ring. Surely this is the best way of marketing cattle with men actually wanting the Feeding Cows at above killing values. 44 Black & White and ex dairy cows - ave 108.8p They remain very dear with the best over 130p to a top of 143 and a big Cow from Roger Ardern at £1309 (137p) The plainest Holsteins remain under £1/kilo, but only a handful today. 179p/kg 646kg Lim GG & OM Carthy, Barton Under Needwood 174p/kg 682kg Lim R & A White & Son, Snake 172p/kg 660kg Lim R & A White & Son, Snake 167p/kg 836kg Lim RG & E & MJ Round, Thorpe 160p/kg 694kg Lim GH Ball & Partners, Hilderstone 158p/kg 626kg Others PP & DF Redgate Ltd, Moorgreen 157p/kg 670kg AA SM Fletcher, Heathcote 155p/kg 624kg Lim PJ & PA Mitchell, Fradswell 155p/kg 670kg Others PP & DF Redgate Ltd, Fradswell 154p/kg 674kg Lim JW Foot & Sons, Parwich 149p/kg 686kg B Blue x O Black, Melton Mowbray Gross Prices: £1396.12 836kg Lim RG&E& MJ Round, Thorpe £1309.72 956kg Holst RW Ardern & Sons, Topley Pike £1186.68 682kg Lim R & A White & Son, Snake £1156.34 646kg Lim GG & OM Carthy, Barton Under Needwood £1135.20 660kg Lim R & A White & Son, Snake £1133.68 766kg AA RG&E&MJ Round, Thorpe £1118.74 854kg Holst CPR & JM Mycock, Hartington £1110.40 694kg Lim GH Ball & Partners, Hilderstone £1107.04 748kg Char PJ & PA Mitchell, Fradswell £1101.60 810kg Holst VH Mellor, Chelmorten 1 OTM Steer 135p/kg £899 Holst (32 mnths) PK & C Heathcote, Harpur Hill 133 FINISHED CATTLE – overall average 179.1p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles) A big entry like a fortnight ago with the Bank Holiday Market last week.
