Harrison of the early development of Mr. Arnold Clare's mediumship, the descriptions of the séances, the revelations of Peter and the writing of this book took place during the war years 1940-41. As enemy action on London intensified, the physical séances ceased and in the autumn of 1940 were replaced by discussion circles. The first few circles took place in the author's house before a company of about twenty people. It was soon appreciated that the intelligence (known as Peter), speaking through the entranced medium, was of a high order and worthy of reporting. So these large discussion groups gave way to a small circle held in the medium's house, attended by Mr. and Mrs. Clare, Mr. and Mrs. Hart, Mrs. Edwards and the author, an occasional visitor and with Mrs. W. B. Cleveland as stenographer. The procedure at these circles would be that, in normal white light, Mr. Clare would enter into a trance state. His Guide, Peter, taking control, would discourse upon the selected topic answering all questions fluently and without hesitation. Frequently, during these sittings, the air-raid sirens would be heard and the local anti- aircraft guns would be in action. -

Taylor Song and Smoke The ceremony begins with whistling, soft if unexpected, a breathy sound that reminds as much of the tobacco smoke it carries along, as it does of song. It is a low sound, penetrating only because of the stillness of the space, a silbando that whispers a memory with each note of the breath behind it, and the tiny, almost absent echo from the cup, filled as it is with the brown brew of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine. The echo carries a half-haunting sound in the dark, a dark now broken by the red glow of a mapacho cigarette, just as subtly as the whistle breaks the silence. What I want to do in this paper is ask the perhaps obvious question: what do shamans who work within a particular ayahuasca ritual complex do.2 By this I not only mean to ask questions of particular ritual practices, but also who comes to these shamans, and for what reasons. While certainly most if not all shamanic systems in Amazonia involve healing practices, many also involve other ritual elements related to warfare, hunting, local politics, quasi-priestly activities associated with periodic ritual activities, and other both ‘religious’ and ‘practical’ engagements with both human and other-than- human worlds (Highpine 2012:27-28, Brabec de Mori 2011:28, and Calavia Saéz 1 The majority of this paper has been drawn from a chapter of my thesis work (Taylor 2013), written as part of my completion of the requirements for a Master’s degree from the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. -

CORPORATE EXPERIENCE WITH INDIGENOUS NATIONALITIES IN ECUADOR GENERAL BACKGROUND: "Foundation FED" FONDO ECUATORIANO DE DESARROLLO SUSTENTABLE ", has been developing to date processes for quality certification in the exploitation of non-renewable resources with social, environmental and business responsibility, is a non-profit entity, under private civil law, protected by Ecuadorian laws, created by free and voluntary association, by persons without any legal impediment to associate and act in reference to its Statutes, which were approved by the Ministry of the Environment of Ecuador, with Ministerial agreement 045 dated April 24, 2002. For doing so, FED Foundation, for its operations inside and outside the country, is associated with several related entities, among others: Carbon Innovations Ltd which in turn has an alliance with Tricorona, with Genesis Global LLC, PACT INC and the Hale & Dorr Law Firm, Terra Carbon LLC, 33 Asset Management, ICONTEC, Terra Global Capital, Austrian- Israeli Chamber of Commerce, Nova Scotia, Zafiro Business Group, Forrest Bird Society, Global Environmental Alliance, Equitable Origin, as partners with those who develop and represent it. GENERAL BACKGROUND: Most of its work has been developed with indigenous nationalities or in the territory of such nationalities. Native Ecuadorians, are the groups of people who were present in what became Ecuador when Europeans arrived, 7% of Ecuador's population is of indigenous heritage. FED’s has worked virtually with all the indigenous nationalities and groups, and also in almost in all Ecuadorian continental territory. It has worked with human settlements in the provinces of Zamora, Napo, Pastaza, Sucumbíos, and Orellana. -

ADAPTIVE MYTH MAKING: AN ANALYSIS OF THREE AGUARUNA NARRATIVES Elois Ann Berlin Stanford University School of Medicine Introduction Medical systems, like all cultural phenomena, are dynamic and adaptive in response to change. This paper examines some ways in which ethnomedical theories of the Aguaruna Jivaro have changed as a result of the introduction of foreign diseases, e idemics, and of contact with cosmopolitan medicine. The process ofpchange is empirical and those changes that become permanently incorporated have positive adaptive value (1). Discussion will focus on the ways in which the Aguaruna jivaro have incorporated the concept of epidemic and non-epidemic introduced diseases into the Aguaruna ethnomedical system and the impact of “cosmopolitan medicine” (after Dunn 1976) on the theory and practice of shamanic healing. In order to set the stage for discussion, I will first provide a brief description of epidemiological theory sup orting the introduction of epidemic disease at the time of contact. I will then recount some relevant Aguaruna medical theories and treatment procedures. This background will allow me to then describe different types of strategies em loyed to cope with the medical and ethnomedical consequences of both ljong term and current contact and to evaluate their adaptive or functional value. The Aguaruna reside in the rainforests of northcentral Peru. The research reported here was conducted during the decade of the 1970s (2). Shaman collaborators included one tajimat iwishin, one na 0 iwishin, and one kukam iwisbin. Although the term /eukam literal]? refers to Cocama Indian, both Aguaruna and Shuar (a related Jivaroan population in Ecuador) have been trained in this tradition (cf. -

Likely invented by Leah Fox (circa 1860). The last manifestation of ectoplasm seems to have taken place in 1939. Cambridge University has a sample; it looks and feels like cheesecloth or chiffon. J’ai dit que c’était seulement vrai. I never said it was possible. I only said it was true. —Charles Richet Since Lawrence Wolfley’s 1977 article “Repression’s Rainbow: The Presence of Norman O. Brown in Pynchon’s Big Novel,” commentators on Pynchon’s writing have often found themselves in uncomfortable and sometimes ridiculous positions where they are forced to argue about the importance of something although or because it is not explicitly in Pynchon’s text. Using various forms of logic, they find themselves “seeking other orders behind the visible” (GR 188),1 often concluding that something’s present because it’s absent. This paper, which proudly follows in that tradition, is divided into four short parts: the first part is a brief biography of Charles Richet; the second surveys his interests in the paranormal and psychic phenomena, emphasizing what we think are echoes in Gravity’s Rainbow; the third discusses his work on anaphylaxis, particularly as it relates to Gravity’s Rainbow; and in the fourth, we will try to connect the pieces and explain why Richet is, to our minds, perhaps one of the most important historical figures not mentioned in Gravity’s Rainbow. 1. Richet’s Biography Charles Richet was born in 1850 and died in 1935. A Parisian physiologist and student of the occult and paranormal, Richet is best known as the winner of the 1913 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock.2 Richet, originally trained in the emerging new field of psychology, revived the study of hypnotism (which was falling into disrepute by 1875) and convinced Jean-Martin Charcot, Pierre Janet and later, Sigmund Freud, of its value in psychotherapy (Boadella, 46, Wolf 26- 28).
