Deeyah Khan Awarded Telenor Culture Prize 2016 Deeyah Khan awarded Telenor Culture Prize 2016 Telenor Group’s annual Culture Prize, “Boundless Communication” 2016, will be awarded to music producer and film director Deeyah Khan for her artistic achievements which touch on some of the most important themes of our own times. Telenor’s Culture Prize is given annually to performing artists or organisations that have made an extraordinary contribution within culture in Scandinavia, but who also are established internationally. This year’s winner, Deeyah Khan, is an acclaimed music producer and Emmy and Peabody award- winning documentary film director. Her work for women’s rights, freedom of expression and increased cultural understanding has made her to a demanded speaker. Deeyah Khan is also the founder of the media company Fuuse. “The jury awards Telenor’s Culture Prize “Boundless communication” to Deeyah Khan this year because she has a wide international reach which touches on some of the most important themes of our own times.” says Ingrid Kindem, leader of the jury. “We congratulate Deeyah Khan as this year’s winner of Telenor’s Culture Prize. She has established herself as a brave voice, and through her artistic work she has contributed to bring forward voices of the misunderstood or the ignored. She has also helped establish arenas for dialogue across and within cultures,” says Telenor’s President and CEO Sigve Brekke. “I am very thankful to receive this recognition by Telenor which reinforces my commitment to the importance of inter-cultural communication. I will use the prize to further the work I do in Norway and internationally through my media company Fuuse which puts women, people from minorities and third culture kids at the heart of telling their own stories,” says prize winner Deeyah Khan. The prize of 500 000 NOK will be presented and the winner will be celebrated during a gala performance in Oslo Konserthus (Oslo Concert Hall) Monday on 19 September. Born in Norway to immigrant parents of Pakistani ancestry, the experience of living between different cultures, both the beauty and the challenges, dominates her artistic vision. She has received several awards for her work supporting freedom of expression, human rights and peace, including the Ossietzky prize by Norwegian PEN, the University of Oslo’s Human Rights Award and lately the 2016 Peer Gynt Prize from the Parliament of Norway. Deeyah is the founder of Fuuse, a media and arts production company established in 2010 to let women, people from minorities, and third culture kids tell their own stories. One of the most recent Fuuse initiatives is sister-hood, a digital magazine and a series of live events spotlighting the voices of women of Muslim heritage. Deeyah Khan is also a well- recognized speaker at international human rights events and platforms including the United Nations. I grew up in a community where honor is a form of social currency. It is a source of concern from the moment we are born. “Honor” can be the most sought-after, protected, and prized asset that defines the status and reputation of a family within their community. This burden weighs most heavily upon women’s behavior. This collective sense of honor and shame has for centuries confined our movement and freedom of choice, and restricted our autonomy. You cannot be who you are, nor express your needs, hopes, and opinions as an individual if they conflict with the greater good and reputation of the family, the community, the collective. If you grow up in a community defined by these patriarchal concepts of honor and social structures, these are the parameters by which you are expected to live. This is true for my own life and experiences. Autonomy is not acceptable, and can be punished by abuse, threats, intimidation, exclusion by the group, and violence, of which the most extreme manifestation is taking someone’s life— murdering someone in the name of “honor.” This is something that has interested me throughout my life because of my own experiences with meeting resistance and opposition to my forms of expression and life choices.

    Guidance for city policy-makers with good practice examples The Intercultural city aims at basing its policies and identity on the explicit acknowledgement that diversity can be a resource and not necessarily a problem. To achieve this, the city puts in place a strategy to adapt its governance system and its policies in all relevant fields to the needs of a diverse population. Intercultural city strategies need to facilitate positive intercultural encounters and exchanges but should not ignore or fail to address intercultural conflict. Conflict is to be welcomed as inevitable. Handled well, it can lead to mutual learning and growth for all participants, including city authorities. Consultation and participation of citizens and communities in the development, implementation and evaluation of the intercultural city strategy is not only important and a value in itself, it is essential for achievement. A genuinely intercultural city can only be achieved through the active participation of all the major institutions, groups and communities in the city. Introduction We have learnt, from experience as well as from research, that women’s participation and influence in the areas of peace and security are decisive for the effectiveness of our efforts to build resilience, prevent and resolve conflict, and sustain peace. The roles women play and the opportunities that are available to them therefore have an impact on national and international security. So do obstacles to women’s empowerment and restrictions on women’s rights. Women are entitled to take part in processes that affect their future and in decisions that affect their lives. Moreover, by recruiting from a broader base, irrespective of gender or other personal characteristics, we are more likely to be able to put together competent teams. We gain a better understanding of the challenges involved and are more likely to find solutions if we consult more broadly. For all these reasons, the women, peace and security agenda continues to be a high priority for Norway. This is the second annual report on the implementation of the Norwegian National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (2015-2018) since the baseline year 2015.
