    I’M NOT THERE (1956-2007) Stephen Scobie Je est un autre—Arthur Rimbaud I’m Not There (2007) In this autumn season of 2007, I can see that I am going to be thinking a lot about the Bob Dylan song known as “I’m Not There (1956).” At least, that is the title given to it on most of its early, bootleg appearances. Now that it has finally been officially released, the sub-title date has been dropped—which is a pity (since it added an element of mystery to the song) but also understandable (since no good explanation of the date has ever been given). “I’m Not There” is perhaps the ultimate Dylan bootleg, and has always been a subject for cult idealization as the most obscure of Dylan’s “lost” songs: a major master- piece that almost no one knows, and which indeed seems to conspire actively against being known. Now, it has become the title of Todd Haynes’s movie I’m Not There, “inspired by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan”—“many” being the operative word. The film is already famous for casting six different actors to play aspects of Dylan at different points in his career. If this strategy is a gimmick, it is a successful one: the film is generating vast amounts of advance publicity, much of it based on the photographs of Cate Blanchett looking, uncannily and androgynously, like 1966 Bob. The film is not due for North American release until late November, though it has played in prestigious festivals like Toronto, New York, and Venice.

    GALERIE THADDAEUS ROPAC DENNIS HOPPER ICONS OF THE SIXTIES PARIS PANTIN 21 Oct 2015 - 27 Feb 2016 OPENING: WEDNESDAY, 21 OCTOBER 2015, 7PM-9PM Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Pantin is delighted to present Dennis Hopper’s exhibition Icons of the Sixties, a selection of photographs and personal objects alongside an emblematic sculpture as well as an installation composed of two canvases and an experimental film. The multitalented actor, director, photographer and painter Dennis Hopper (1936 – 2010) was known as an icon of the New Hollywood and of the artistic underground in California. In his early age he started as an actor alongside James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), working within the traditional Hollywood studio system, yet he felt driven to other artistic fields. Dean advised him to pick up a photo camera to investigate new creative territories. At this time Hopper painted a lot, “influenced by abstract expressionism and jazz” as he said, but after a fire devastated his house in Bel Air in 1961 and destroyed almost all his paintings, he stopped painting and turned more and more to photography. In the following years he always walked around with a camera, as a chronicler of his time, eager to capture the cultural and social seism that hit the American way of life specifically on the West coast – with its revolutionary wave of beat, pop and art. At the centre of the exhibition in Paris Pantin we present a selection of hand-signed vintage photographic prints by Dennis Hopper where he experimented with an irregular black frame produced by the photo-emulsion.

This online course was written by Chris Garcia, an Austin American-Statesman Film Critic. The course was originally offered through Barnes & Noble's online education program and is now available on The Midnight Palace with permission. There are a few ways to get the most out of this class. We certainly recommend registering on our message boards if you aren't currently a member. This will allow you to discuss Film Noir with the other members; we have a category specifically dedicated to noir. Secondly, we also recommend that you purchase the following books. They will serve as a companion to the knowledge offered in this course. You can click each cover to purchase directly. Both of these books are very well written and provide incredible insight in to Film Noir, its many faces, themes and undertones. This course is structured in a way that makes it easy for students to follow along and pick up where they leave off. There are a total of FIVE lessons. Each lesson contains lectures, summaries and an assignment. Note: this course is not graded. The sole purpose is to give students a greater understanding of Dark City, or, Film Noir to the novice gumshoe. Having said that, the assignments are optional but highly recommended.     Member Calendar MAR APR Mar–Apr 2019 “I never get over wondering at your prodigiousness,” MoMA founding director Alfred H. Barr Jr. mused admiringly to Lincoln Kirstein in 1945. Indeed, the extent of Kirstein’s influence on American culture in the 1930s and ’40s is hard to overstate. Best known for having cofounded, with the Russian choreographer George Balanchine, the School of American Ballet and the New York City Ballet, Kirstein was also a key figure in MoMA’s early history. Organizing exhibitions, writing catalogue essays, donating works to the Museum, and making acquisitions on its behalf, Kirstein championed a vision of modernism that favored figuration over abstraction and argued for an interdisciplinary marriage between the arts. Lincoln Kirstein’s Modern (Member Previews start March 13) invites you to rediscover rich areas of MoMA’s collection through the eyes of this impresario and tastemaker.     Nashville Director: Robert Altman Country: USA Date: 1975 A review by Roger Ebert: Taking down Pauline Kael's 1976 collection Reeling to re-read her famous review of "Nashville," I find a yellow legal sheet marking the page: my notes for a class I taught on the film. "What is this story about?" I wrote. The film may be great because you can't really answer that question. It is a musical; Robert Altman observes in his commentary on the new DVD re-release that it contains more than an hour of music. It is a docudrama about the Nashville scene. It is a political parable, written and directed in the immediate aftermath of Watergate (the scenes in the Grand Ole Opry were shot on the day Richard M. Nixon resigned). It tells interlocking stories of love and sex, of hearts broken and mended. And it is a wicked satire of American smarminess ("Welcome to Nashville and to my lovely home," a country star gushes to Elliott Gould). But more than anything else, it is a tender poem to the wounded and the sad. The most unforgettable characters in the movie are the best ones: Lily Tomlin's housewife, who loves her deaf sons. The lonely soldier who stands guard over the country singer his mother saved from a fire. The old man grieving for his wife, who has just died. Barbara Harris' runaway wife, who rises to the occasion when she is handed the microphone after a shooting. And even that smarmy country singer (Henry Gibson), who when the chips are down acts in the right way.
