March 28, 1994 LB 137 to Hurt Some People. and Probably the Majority of Those Products, the Overwhelming Majority, Are Not Going March 28, 1994 LB 137 to hurt some people. And probably the majority of those products, the overwhelming majority, are not going to be manufactured here in the State of Nebraska. And more importantly, a lot of the products, the few products that we do manufacture here in the state, they are sold outside the State of Nebraska, so they don't have an impact... they have to meet those standards of all the other 50 states as well. So they are being...they are under those product liability laws in those other states. I want to thank Senator Kristensen for bringing the amendment. I don't know if I am going to support it because I don't think it takes us that last final step. He takes the obvious ones that I think that's good. I think it is a step in the right way and maybe this debate will help to formulate his decision so they will take that step and acknowledge that... PRESIDENT ROBAK: Time. SENATOR ABBOUD: ...there will be other manufacturers that we need to protect our citizens from. Thank you. PRESIDENT ROBAK: Thank you, Senator Abboud. Senator Lindsay announces the following guests are visiting the Legislature. Edna Turvold, Orville Walswick, and Della Newlin, all from Northwood, Iowa are here under the south balcony visiting the senator. Will you all please stand and be recognized. Thank you. Senator Crosby, your light is next. SENATOR CROSBY: Thank you. Madam President and members. Senator Will struck a note with me when he said, and Senator Abboud mentions the breast implants as being in the news and that it is a political issue. Well, yes, I am sure it is in the news a lot, and you passed around the clipping about Dow settling finally with some of the women who were hurt by the breast implants. But as I said a year ago, I am speaking out for those women who were sold a bill of goods for whatever reason, to look like Marilyn Monroe, or Twiggy, I don't know who they wanted to look like, a lot of that was...that's the far right and the far left or some or other in that particular subject, but my point is a lot of it, and I don't have any numbers on this, but a lot of it is cosmetic surgery and there are a lot of sins committed in this country and others under that label of cosmetic surgery. And the implants have hurt so many women, young women. I can tell you and give you names that you can talk to of women who are still suffering. Some of it wasn't...were medical reasons. Some were done for medical 11571.

  • During the 1930-60'S, Hollywood Directors Were Told to "Put the Light Where the Money Is" and This Often Meant Spectacular Costumes
During the 1930-60's, Hollywood directors were told to "put the light where the money is" and this often meant spectacular costumes. Stuidos hired the biggest designers and fashion icons to bring to life the glitz and the glamour that moviegoers expected. Edith Head, Adrian, Walter Plunkett, Irene and Helen Rose were just a few that became household names because of their designs. In many cases, their creations were just as important as the plot of the movie itself. Few costumes from the "Golden Era" of Hollywood remain except for a small number tha have been meticulously preserved by a handful of collectors. Greg Schreiner is one of the most well-known. His wonderful Hollywood fiolm costume collection houses over 175 such masterpieces. Greg shares his collection in the show Hollywoood Revisited. Filled with music, memories and fun, the revue allows the audience to genuinely feel as if they were revisiting the days that made Hollywood a dream factory. The wardrobes of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Julie Andrews, Robert Taylor, Bette Davis, Ann-Margret, Susan Hayward, Bob Hope and Judy Garland are just a few from the vast collection that dazzle the audience. Hollywood Revisited is much more than a visual treat. Acclaimed vocalists sing movie-related music while modeling the costumes. Schreiner, a professional musician, provides all the musical sccompaniment and anecdotes about the designer, the movie and scene for each costume. The show has won critical praise from movie buffs, film historians, and city-wide newspapers. Presentation at the legendary Pickfair, The State Theatre for The Los Angeles Conservancy and The Santa Barbara Biltmore Hotel met with huge success.

There are the film stars of the world: Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Bridget Bardot, Meryl Streep. Such talent and beauty. But we’re more interested in the talent behind furniture beauties: Saarinen and Bertoia and van der Rohe. Knoll designs have featured prolifically in film, from the classical to the contemporary to the futuristic - evidence that Knoll is Modern Always. Whether it’s a Bertoia Chair in Devil Wears Prada or a Platner Chair in Quantum of Solace, furniture can often hijack the attention of the audience, away from the action and dialogue of a film to communicate values and mood wordlessly. A well-chosen sofa, chair, or table can subliminally tell us more about a character’s personality or an environment’s tone than many pages of script. When a production designer needs to convey a character’s good taste and discerning style or when they simply need an extremely handsome piece in a domestic or office setting, we’ll often spot a Knoll. With the Oscars upon us, allow us to recognize some of our most prominent leading characters to grace the big screen. EERO SAAR INEN THE WOMB CHAIR was a groundbreaking design by Saarinen at Florence Knoll's request for "a chair that was like a basket full of pillows - something she could really curl up in." This mid-century classic supportas countless positions and offers a comforting oasis of calm—hence the name. And resulting in being staged on countless sets for a sense of chic comfort and style. An Analysis of Shaping of Female Characters in Films Directed by Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese and Chinese Diasporic Female Directors Hongyu An Faculty Advisor: Carlos Rojas Asian and Middle Eastern Studies March 2021 This project was submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate Liberal Studies Program in the Graduate School of Duke University. Copyright by Hongyu An 2021 Abstract This thesis intends to examine the shaping of female characters in films directed by Chinese female directors. Six films are selected as examples: The Crossing (Guo chun tian, Bai Xue, 2019), Angels Wear White (Jia nian hua, Vivian Qu, 2017), Love Education (Xiang ai xiang qin, Sylvia Chang, 2017), Dear Ex (Shei Xian Ai Shang Ta De, Mag Hsu and Chih- Yen Hsu, 2018), Song of the Exile (Ke tu qiu hen, Ann Hui, 1990), and The Farewell (Lulu Wang, 2019). The selected films are divided into three groups: those directed by mainland Chinese, Taiwanese and Chinese diasporic women. By comparing the female characters with their counterparts and by analyzing the character shaping and identity formation of the female protagonists in these films, this thesis will discuss the commonalities and differences among the protagonists. The project is not intended to make general and mechanical conclusions, but to show how a variety of female characters have appeared in recent Chinese films directed by female directors, and how these characters epitomize different groups of women or female identities in the current Chinese society.
