Carapace ricoperto da fitte setole. Rostro corto, curvo verso l’alto, 7-11 denti nel margine superiore. Dente epigastrico separato dai denti DISTRIBUZIONE ATTUALE rostrali. Spine orbitali, antennali ed epatiche Mar Rosso, Mediterraneo orientale presenti, spina pterigostomiale assente. Secondo segmento addominale con un piccolo tubercolo in posizione dorso-mediana, i quattro segmenti PRIMA SEGNALAZIONE IN MEDITERRANEO posteriori sono ornati da una cresta in posizione Steinitz, 1929 Palestina nel 1924. mediana. Telson con 3-4 paia di spine mobili laterali. Spina basale nel primo e secondo paio di pereiopodi. Petasma simmetrico, a forma di “T”, PRIMA SEGNALAZIONE IN ITALIA con proiezioni disto-laterali simili ad un’ala. - COLORAZIONE ORIGINE Carapace marrone chiaro, cresta addominale Mar Rosso bianca. Flagelli antennali rosso-arancio. Pleopodi rossi con chiazze bianche. Uropodi rosso scuro con margini bianchi. VIE DI DISPERSIONE PRIMARIE Migrazione lessepsiana attraverso il Canale di Suez. Abstract The assessment of Penaeidae species diversity in a particular region is very important in formulating conservation strategies. In the present study, the survey on diversity of Penaeidae species in south east coast of India has been assessed on the basis of landing of variety of species in this group. Penaeidae species were collected from various main landing centers of south east coast of India for three years. Identification and nomenclature was done based on previously published literature. Among the 59 species observed, the Penaeus semisulcatus, Penaeus monodon and Fenneropenaeus indicus were found mostly in all landing centers.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The phylogenetic relationships within the family Penaeidae are examined based on mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of 30 species from 20 genera. The analysis generally supports the three-tribe scheme proposed by Burkenroad (1983) but it is not consistent with the five-group classification of Kubo (1949). Three clades are resolved: (Penaeus sensu stricto + Fenneropenaeus + Litopenaeus + Farfantepenaeus + Marsupenaeus + Melicertus + Funchalia + Heteropenaeus), (Metapenaeus + Parapenaeopsis + Xiphopenaeus + Rimapenaeus + Megokris + Trachysalambria) and (Metapenaeopsis + Penaeopsis + Parapenaeus), corresponding to the Penaeini, Trachypenaeini and Parapenaeini respectively, while the affinities of Atypopenaeus and Trachypenaeopsis are obscure. The molecular data support that Miyadiella represents the juvenile stage of Atypopenaeus. Within the Trachypenaeini, Trachypenaeus sensu lato is clearly paraphyletic, while the monophyly of Penaeus sensu lato in the Penaeini is questionable.

The penaeoid and sergestoid shrimps comprise (he Dendrobranchiata, a sub­ order of the crustacean order Decapoda. This group is characterized by (a) highly branched gills and (b) a primitive mode of reproduction in which fertilized eggs are not incubated, as in other decapods, but instead are cast into the water, hatch­ ing later in the plankton as nauplius larvae. Dendrobranchiate shrimps, with about 500 described species, are important members of shallow and deepwater benthic faunas, and also contribute as well to the bathypelagic, mesopelagic and even planktonic communities of the world's oceans. Shrimp fisheries and aquaculture of the world are dominated by this group, especially members of the tropical and subtropical family Penaeidae. Given their importance in marine communities, commerce, and the phytogeny of decapod crustaceans, one might expect that the taxonomy of the group might be well worked out. However, this is not altogether the case, and therefore the present volume is particularly welcome. There is no lack of expertise by the authors.
