It is also intended to interest leading organizations and people working at the grassroots level in urban and rural areas in problems of militarism and peace education. The first two chapters show hoW, in former times, militarism was brought to Africa by the Europeans through slave trade and colonialism. Chapter 3 shows how militarism continued after independence under neocolonialism in these forms: state terrorism, militarism based on ethnic nationality/conflicts, militarism resulting from "pastoralist conflicts," militarism resulting from cultural and religious conflicts, and militarism based on ideological conflicts. Chapter 4 explores how militarism is still connected to the exploitation and oppression of Africa with the new strategy called "low intensity conflict" or "low intensity war." Chapter 5 considers developing types of peace education and proposed content of peace education. -

WASH. 90(1), pp. 172-18i PENAEOPSIS EDUARDOI, A NEW SPECIES OF SHRIMP (CRUSTACEA: PENAEIDAE) FROM THE INDO-WEST PACIFIC Isabel Perez Farfante During a revision of the genus Penaeopsis, I discovered that a very distinct Indo-West Pacific species had not been recognized previously, representa- tives having been repeatedly assigned to 2 other species, both named by Bate in 1881. As indicated in the list of material examined, my conclusions are based on a study of the Penaeopsis collected during the voyage of the Challenger, 1873-76 and identified by Bate, including the types of his species, "Penaeus rectacutus" and "P. serratus." Also examined were 6 specimens described by de Man, and the relatively large collection of Penaeopsis taken by the U.S. steamer Albatross during the Philippine Expedition, 1907-1909, which includes representatives of 3 of the 4 species found in the Indo-West Pacific. The method of measuring specimens and the terminology used below are described by Perez Farfante (1969). The scales accompanying the illustrations are in millimeters. The materials used are in the collections of the British Museum (Natural History) (BMNH), National Museum of Natural History (USNM), and the Zoological Museum, Amsterdam (ZMA). Fronts in the World Ocean's Large Marine Ecosystems. ICES CM 2007

Belkin and Peter C. Cornillon Abstract. Oceanic fronts shape marine ecosystems; therefore front mapping and characterization is one of the most important aspects of physical oceanography. Here we report on the first effort to map and describe all major fronts in the World Ocean’s Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs). Apart from a geographical review, these fronts are classified according to their origin and physical mechanisms that maintain them. This first-ever zero-order pattern of the LME fronts is based on a unique global frontal data base assembled at the University of Rhode Island. Thermal fronts were automatically derived from 12 years (1985-1996) of twice-daily satellite 9-km resolution global AVHRR SST fields with the Cayula-Cornillon front detection algorithm. These frontal maps serve as guidance in using hydrographic data to explore subsurface thermohaline fronts, whose surface thermal signatures have been mapped from space. Our most recent study of chlorophyll fronts in the Northwest Atlantic from high-resolution 1-km data (Belkin and O’Reilly, 2007) revealed a close spatial association between chlorophyll fronts and SST fronts, suggesting causative links between these two types of fronts. A review of Indian Ocean Foa cardinalfishes (Percomorpha: Apogonidae: Apogonichthyini), with a new species from Chagos Archipelago and the Maldives THOMAS H. It is characterized by a relatively uniform dusky head and body, fewer than 10 pores between the mandibular and articular pores, and a single line of free neuromasts along the dentary. The new species is compared to the two regional congeners: Foa madagascariensis, known from tidal estuaries and shallows of East Africa and the islands of the western Indian Ocean, is characterized by discrete, small, intense dark spots on the body, about 35 pores between the mandibular and articular pores, and multiple linear rows of free neuromasts on the dentary; and Foa fo, a widespread species, has indistinct irregular dark bars on the body, about 30 pores between the mandibular and articular pores, and multiple linear rows of free neuromasts on the dentary. Abstract The assessment of Penaeidae species diversity in a particular region is very important in formulating conservation strategies. In the present study, the survey on diversity of Penaeidae species in south east coast of India has been assessed on the basis of landing of variety of species in this group. Penaeidae species were collected from various main landing centers of south east coast of India for three years. Identification and nomenclature was done based on previously published literature. Among the 59 species observed, the Penaeus semisulcatus, Penaeus monodon and Fenneropenaeus indicus were found mostly in all landing centers. -
