A mix of intricate ancient times and the present, Baku’s Old Town, or “Icharishahar” as it is known locally, is a must see for visitors of the Caucasus largest city. A maze of alleys, mosques and historical remnants, this former Persian capital plays host to some of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, such as the picturesque Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower.
While Baku is unquestionably steeped in history, it is a burgeoning center of vibrancy and arts. Hallmarks of the ‘new’ Baku include the Flame Towers, three buildings completely covered in LED screen which typically displays burning flames and the Baku Crystal Hall, which was home of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest.
