After its maiden flight on 6 November 1922 more than 250 Whales were produced and flown all around the world. Most famous was probably the „Amundsen-Whale“ used by the Norwegian explorer to fly to the North Pole, but also other re- cord flights were undertaken in the 20s and 30s of the last century. The Dornier „Wal“ (Whale) was one of the best-known and most successful flying boats ever developed. The aircraft was gigantic against other aircraft of its day. It completed its maiden flight on No- vember 6, 1922 and its total production ran to more than 200 exam- ples. To avoid violating the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, from July 1922 production of the flying boat was carried out at Pisa in Italy on the premises of Costruzioni Meccaniche Aeronautiche S.A. Das Flugboot Dornier „Wal“ (Do J) Von Günter Frost (ADL) Erstveröffentlichung 03.2013 im ADL-Internetportal Teil 3: Bedeutende Forschungs- und Fernflüge In den Jahren 1924 bis 1930 führten „Wal“-Flugboote, aus verschiedenen Ländern und mit unterschiedlichen Motoren ausgerüstet, eine ganze Reihe aufsehenerregender Fernflüge durch. Sie machten den Namen Dornier international bekannt und begründeten bzw. festigten den Ruf des „Wal“ als zuverlässiges, robustes und un- erreicht hochseetüchtiges Flugzeug. Selbst einige mißglückte Unternehmen förderten diesen Ruf, da die be- treffenden Besatzungen nur dank der großen Seetüchtigkeit des Dornier-Wals überlebten. Flug von Ramón Franco zu den Kanarischen Inseln im Januar 1924 Capitán (Hauptmann) Ramón Franco Bahamonde (ein Bruder des späteren spanischen Staatschefs) flog mit dem spanischem „Mi- litär-Wal“ W3, M-MWAC „Maria Antonieta“ (Werknummer 3, 2 x 360/395 PS Rolls-Royce Eagle IX) vom spanischen Flugbootstütz- punkt El Atalayón bei Melilla (Nordafrika) zunächst nach Cádiz und dann zusammen mit drei einmotorigen Militärflugzeugen Bre- guet 14 in mehreren Etappen entlang der nordafrikanischen Küste zu den Kanarischen Inseln. Von dort flog er allein wieder nach El Atalayón, entsprechend einer Gesamtstrecke von 4.474 km. Dabei überflog der „Wal“ als erstes Flugzeug den 3.718 m hohen Pico del Teide auf Teneriffa. Gescheiterte Überquerung des Nordatlantiks durch Antonio Locatelli im Juli/August 1924 Der italienische Leutnant Antonio Locatelli, ein bekannter Militärflieger des ersten Weltkriegs, der ursprünglich gemeinsam mit Roald Amundsen zum Nordpol fliegen wollte, unternahm statt dessen mit dem italienischen Militär-„Wal“ I-DEOR (Werknummer 19, 2 x 360/395 PS Rolls-Royce Eagle IX) den Versuch, den Nordatlantik zu überqueren.

Im Juni dieses Jahres werde ich 60 Jahre jung und habe beschlossen die Führung der Firma an einen engagierten Nachfol- ger abzugeben, um mich etwas in den Hintergrund zu begeben und meinen neuen Lebensabschnitt zu genie - ßen. Ab dem 1. Mai 2015 wird die Geschäftsführung von Herrn Stephan Stritter übernommen. Er ist seit 2009 Pilot bei uns. Darüber hinaus hat er mich in den letzten Jahren bereits massiv bei der Organisation der Firma unterstützt. Ich werde allerdings als Technischer Leiter weiterhin der Firma treu bleiben und man wird mich auch in Zukunft immer mal wieder in den Räumlichkeiten der Sylt Air antreffen können.
