En 2004, una multinacional textil cierra sus puertas en Bonmatí (Girona). Cerca de 300 personas, la mayoría mujeres de mediana edad, se quedan sin trabajo y tienen que decidir cómo reorientar sus vidas. La edad es una barrera pero también lo es su poca formación académica. En cambio, han acumulado una experiencia que ya no les sirve de mucho, ya que su sector, el textil, se está desubicando de Cataluña.

In 2004 a multinational textile company closed down in Bonmatí (Girona). This left 300 people, most of them middle-aged women, without work and so they have to decide on a new direction in their lives. Not only age but also their lack of education are obstacles and although they have ample experience this is not worth much as their sector, textiles, is relocating away from Catalonia.

Four decades of occupation of public land, 40,000 neighbours from four different communities: Spaniards, Muslims, Spanish gypsies and Romanians. Luxury dwellings, shacks, pushers, drug addicts, volunteers, employers, nobodies and over 10,000 children. No hospitals, neither schools, nor sheep. Forty years after the arrival of the first settlers to the Cañada Real Galiana, this is the scenario of a 16 km linear city located in the autonomous region of Madrid: the largest illegal settlement in Europe. The peaceful and lawless city of yesteryear has lately become “a settlement of injustice” which is daily haunted by two dramas: poverty, on the one hand, as its inhabitants are those forgotten by a society which intends to recycle them close to an incinerator and, crime and drug dependency, on the other, which are the direct consequence of such misery. The Gipsy Christ is a documentary which shows how El Sacromonte, the famous neighbourhood in Granada, every year, during Wednesday at Holy Week, covers with fire to receive The Gipsy Christ and Holy Mary of El Sacromonte. It is one of the most universal examples of the Spanish Holy Week.During the long hours that the procession takes, the most common religious devotion exists side by side with the traditional gipsy enthusiasm of such a traditional neighbourhood. The formal processions give way to the gipsys´ excitement with their songs and dances to the Christ to the rhythm of saetas, alegrías and soleás. Years of tradition coincide with a society that looks for changes.
