THE FORBIDDEN ZONE, ESCAPING EARTH AND TONALITY: AN EXAMINATION OF JERRY GOLDSMITH’S TWELVE-TONE SCORE FOR PLANET OF THE APES VINCENT GASSI A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO MAY 2019 © VINCENT GASSI, 2019 ii ABSTRACT Jerry GoldsMith’s twelve-tone score for Planet of the Apes (1968) stands apart in Hollywood’s long history of tonal scores. His extensive use of tone rows and permutations throughout the entire score helped to create the diegetic world so integral to the success of the filM. GoldsMith’s formative years prior to 1967–his training and day to day experience of writing Music for draMatic situations—were critical factors in preparing hiM to meet this challenge. A review of the research on music and eMotion, together with an analysis of GoldsMith’s methods, shows how, in 1967, he was able to create an expressive twelve-tone score which supported the narrative of the filM. The score for Planet of the Apes Marks a pivotal moment in an industry with a long-standing bias toward modernist music. iii For Mary and Bruno Gassi. The gift of music you passed on was a game-changer. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Heartfelt thanks and much love go to my aMazing wife Alison and our awesome children, Daniela, Vince Jr., and Shira, without whose unending patience and encourageMent I could do nothing. I aM ever grateful to my brother Carmen Gassi, not only for introducing me to the music of Jerry GoldsMith, but also for our ongoing conversations over the years about filM music, composers, and composition in general; I’ve learned so much.

How Film & TV Music Communicate – Vol.2 Text © Brian Morrell 2013 Chapter 5 I N S P A C E E V E R Y O N E C A N H E A R T H E C H O R D C H A N G E S ( p a r t 1 ) This chapter will examine the music for some of the most eminent and successful ‘Space movies’ in cinema history. The chapter will examine numerous memorable, famous and iconic science fiction films, most of them with a unifying theme of either being set in Space and/or involving Aliens. It will also ask whether there are inherently ‘sci-fi’ methods of composing music and if there are chord changes, orchestration techniques or melodic devices which are commonly used. Films and music discussed are: Alien (Jerry Goldsmith / Howard Hanson) Aliens (James Horner) Apollo 13 (James Horner) Independence Day, (David Arnold) Star Trek (Alexander Courage, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner and Michael Giacchano) Mission to Mars (Ennio Morricone) Batman Forever (Elliot Goldenthal) ALIEN Jerry Goldsmith Alien is a 1979 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott. The lead character is a creature that stalks and kills nearly the entire crew of a spaceship. The common mantra that Alien was to Star Wars what the Rolling Stones were to the Beatles goes some way to articulating how the film Alien is perceived by cinema-goers. Alien offers a subtle, cold, desolate environment; it lacks the usual Hollywood sheen – the razzmatazz, the glitz and the spectacle. It is a slow, plodding, brooding, dark film but one which completely captured the imagination of people who watched it.

specialists and gruesome Son’a observers monitor the STAR TREK: INSURRECTION unsuspecting population. A muted horn line over ominous timpani and piano figures distantly recalls Goldsmith’s Federation theme TRACK-BY-TRACK ANALYSIS from STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, while also evoking his dark conspiracy motive from the 1977 film CAPRICORN ONE. 1. Ba’ku Village Jerry Goldsmith’s score for STAR TREK: INSURRECTION follows Skittering electronics and fierce statements of the insurrection well-established tradition by opening with Alexander Courage’s theme break the tension as a mysterious interloper in a Federation inspiring fanfare from the original STAR TREK television series. The invisibility suit begins to raise a commotion. The theme continues fanfare rises gracefully through shifting harmonies to culminate in to punctuate Goldsmith’s signature mixed-meter action writing (the a warm major chord, interwoven with noble statements of alternating bars of 6/8 and 5/8 here will become a recurring device Goldsmith’s insurrection theme. Next, a dancing harp figure leads throughout the score) as the fugitive struggles with his pursuers into a lovely pastoral theme on solo oboe for shots of the quaint and, with a dramatic flourish, removes his helmet to reveal himself Ba’ku village that open the film. Properties like Star Trek , Star Wars , and the Marvel Comics Universe extend across fi lm, television, video games, novels, comics, toys, and so on. Media consumers are now able to engage with their favorite characters, locations, and other franchise- distinguishing features in a variety of ways, through several different kinds of media. Viewers/readers/players follow the franchise, enjoying the interrelationships that are created across the textual galaxies. Such stories, characters and settings are transmedial in that they cross borders between different media, and traditional boundaries between media forms do not always hold fast or refl ect the audience’s experience of media engagement. 1 In this kind of multimedia network, music can illuminate the relationship between constituent texts of a transmedial franchise and may act as an agent for articulating and constructing those textual connections.

  • Diane Monroe/Tony Miceli Duo
DIANE MONROE/TONY MICELI DUO “The real challenge of playing in a duo setting is saying what you want to say with as many tools as you have. That enables you to get to the point of being able to orchestrate so that the duo sounds like a larger ensemble.” Diane Monroe Diane Monroe and Tony Miceli, both native Philadelphians, have admired each other’s playing, since the mid 1980’s. Although Monroe performed mostly as a classical artist during that time, Miceli would invite her to jam sessions in his basement studio. From these sessions, they developed a very special musical bond. Their friendship developed at of their mutual musical interests. Some years later, Miceli and Monroe began playing together in various trio, quartet, and quintet configurations, each in leading roles, depending upon the band. In 2009, Monroe and Miceli discussed the idea of forming a duo. At the time, they were both eager and reluctant, due to the “limited” range of each instrument, and vast differences in production of sound, and finding a good balance between the two instruments. It took much practice and experimentation to find their ‘sound.’ But find it they did in their up- coming debut CD, Alone Together. By 2010, they had developed a blend with which they were happy and proud to use as a model by which to grow as a duo. They began with numerous live webcasts from Tony’s basement studio. These webacasts enabled them to develop a large local Philly online following; they received great feedback, which gave them more ideas for repertoire and other musical territories to explore.
