Star Trek Into Darkness [Music from the Motion Picture] MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE MUSIC BY MICHAEL GIACCHINO A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR I have had the honor of writing about Michael Giacchino before. And, while it is always a pleasure and privilege, I have never been more grateful. Because, as you will discover, Mr. Giacchino has outdone himself this time. Not only has he expanded and deepened various themes from his work on our first Star Trek film, but he has written remarkable new cues, most notably the theme for our villain, played by the incomparable Benedict Cumberbatch. When Michael first played Harrison’s theme for me, I was floored. It spoke to me in a way I couldn’t have anticipated. It helped me define a character that was central to a film I was still editing. The suite had brilliance, fear, pride, mania, hubris, darkness, and still, somehow, sympathy. It was yet another stroke of genius flowing from the pen of Michael Giacchino. I’m not even sure why I was surprised. And that isn’t nearly the only gem in this new score (just to mention one other favorite: his cues for the se- quence on Kronos have a grit, power, and raw energy of which I could have only dreamed). Needless to say, yet again, his score elevates every minute of the film. I have never been more proud of, or grateful for, a collaboration. Michael? You are a dear friend and an absolute wizard. And I cannot wait until my next lucky opportunity to be amazed by, and to write about, you. J.J. Abrams Los Angeles, California Soundtrack Album Produced by ProTools Engineer: 0 302 067 198 2 6 1. POPS FOUR We Have Liftoff! The Rocket City in Space SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 2020 • 7:30 p.m. • MARK C. SMITH CONCERT HALL, VON BRAUN CENTER Huntsville Symphony Orchestra • C. DAVID RAGSDALE, Guest Conductor • GREGORY VAJDA, Music Director One of the nation’s major aerospace hubs, Huntsville—the “Rocket City”—has been heavily invested in the industry since Operation Paperclip brought more than 1,600 German scientists to the United States between 1945 and 1959. The Army Ballistic Missile Agency arrived at Redstone Arsenal in 1956, and Eisenhower opened NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in 1960 with Dr. Wernher von Braun as Director. The Redstone and Saturn rockets, the “Moon Buggy” (Lunar Roving Vehicle), Skylab, the Space Shuttle Program, and the Hubble Space Telescope are just a few of the many projects led or assisted by Huntsville. Tonight’s concert celebrates our community’s vital contributions to rocketry and space exploration, at the most opportune of celestial conjunctions: July 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon-landing mission, and 2020 brings the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, America’s leading aerospace museum and Alabama’s largest tourist attraction. THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF FILM-VIDEO AND MEDIA STUDIES THE EVOLUTION OF UHURA: REPRESENTATIONS OF WOMEN IN TREK KRISTEN TUNNEY Fall 2010 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Film-Video with honors in Media Studies Reviewed and approved* by the following: Jeanne Lynn Hall Associate Professor of Communications Thesis Supervisor Barbara Bird Associate Professor of Communications Honors Adviser Paula Droege Lecturer in Philosophy Third Reader * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i Abstract: The Evolution of Uhura: Representations of Women in Trek will be a primarily textual character analysis* of the ways in which the character of Uhura has evolved and transformed over the past forty years. In the paper, I claim that Trek films have always had both positive and negative representations of women, and that ―NuTrek‖ fails and succeeds in ways that are different from but comparable to those of ―classic‖ Trek. I will devote the first half of my paper to Uhura‘s portrayal in Star Treks I through VI. The second half of my research will focus on the newest film, Star Trek (2009). I will attempt to explain the character‘s evolution as well as to critique the ways in which NuTrek featuring the Original Series characters manages to simultaneously triumph and fail at representing the true diversity of women. * my interpretation of how different characters can be ―read‖ as either positive or negative representations of gender; my own interpretation will be compared and contrasted with that of other Trek scholars, and I will be citing sources both in feminist literature and media studies literature (and some combinations) to back up my own conclusions about the films.

  • The History of Star Trek
The History of Star Trek The original Star Trek was the brainchild of Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991), a US TV producer and scriptwriter. His idea was to make a TV series that combined the futuristic possibilities of science fiction with the drama and excitement of TV westerns (his original title for the series was ‘Wagon Train to the Stars’). Star Trek was first aired on American TV in 1966, and ran for three series. Each episode was a self-contained adventure/mystery, but they were all linked together by the premise of a gigantic spaceship, crewed by a diverse range of people, travelling about the galaxy on a five-year mission ‘to explore new life and new civilisations, to boldly go where no man has gone before’. Although not especially successful it attracted a loyal fan-base, partly male fans that liked the technological and special effects elements of the show. But the show also attracted a large number of female fans, many of whom were drawn to the complex interaction and dynamic between the three main characters, the charismatic but impetuous Captain Kirk (William Shatner), the crotchety old doctor McCoy (DeForest Kelley) and the coldly logical Vulcan science officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy). After the show was cancelled in 1969 the fans conducted a lengthy and ultimately successful campaign to resurrect the franchise. Roddenberry enjoyed success with several motion pictures, including Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979); action-thriller Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982); Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) and the more comic Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986).

  • An Examination of Jerry Goldsmith's
THE FORBIDDEN ZONE, ESCAPING EARTH AND TONALITY: AN EXAMINATION OF JERRY GOLDSMITH’S TWELVE-TONE SCORE FOR PLANET OF THE APES VINCENT GASSI A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO MAY 2019 © VINCENT GASSI, 2019 ii ABSTRACT Jerry GoldsMith’s twelve-tone score for Planet of the Apes (1968) stands apart in Hollywood’s long history of tonal scores. His extensive use of tone rows and permutations throughout the entire score helped to create the diegetic world so integral to the success of the filM. GoldsMith’s formative years prior to 1967–his training and day to day experience of writing Music for draMatic situations—were critical factors in preparing hiM to meet this challenge. A review of the research on music and eMotion, together with an analysis of GoldsMith’s methods, shows how, in 1967, he was able to create an expressive twelve-tone score which supported the narrative of the filM. The score for Planet of the Apes Marks a pivotal moment in an industry with a long-standing bias toward modernist music. iii For Mary and Bruno Gassi. The gift of music you passed on was a game-changer. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Heartfelt thanks and much love go to my aMazing wife Alison and our awesome children, Daniela, Vince Jr., and Shira, without whose unending patience and encourageMent I could do nothing. I aM ever grateful to my brother Carmen Gassi, not only for introducing me to the music of Jerry GoldsMith, but also for our ongoing conversations over the years about filM music, composers, and composition in general; I’ve learned so much.

Adventures in Film Music Redux - Composer Profiles ADVENTURES IN FILM MUSIC REDUX COMPOSER PROFILES A. R. RAHMAN Elizabeth: The Golden Age A.R. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack. Rahman’s later notable scores included those for the films 127 Hours (2010)—for which he received another Academy Award nomination—and the Hindi-language movies Rockstar (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013), Highway (2014), and Beyond the Clouds (2017).

AP Photo George Takei, the famed actor and activist perhaps best-known for his role of Sulu in "Star Trek" or for his posts on civil rights to his millions of social media followers, has lived many lives. Among them: he was one of roughly 120,000 Japanese-Americans who lived through internment after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, an experience that he says he feels more obliged than ever to discuss. He recently recounted in the The New York Times, “I was 7 years old when we were transferred to another camp for ‘disloyals.’ My mother and father’s only crime was refusing, out of principle, to sign a loyalty pledge promulgated by the government. The authorities had already taken my parents’ home on Garnet Street in Los Angeles, their once thriving dry cleaning business, and finally their liberty.” After they were released, he and his family had to readjust. Takei ran for school government in junior high and high school, studied architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and earned a degree in drama from the University of California, Los Angeles. A turning point for his This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com. career came in 1966 when he began playing the role of Hikaru Sulu in the Star Trek television series. From the beginning, Takei fought stereotypes and tropes imposed on his character — in one instance, for the "Star Trek" episode “The Naked Time,” Takei convinced writer John D.F.

How Film & TV Music Communicate – Vol.2 Text © Brian Morrell 2013 Chapter 5 I N S P A C E E V E R Y O N E C A N H E A R T H E C H O R D C H A N G E S ( p a r t 1 ) This chapter will examine the music for some of the most eminent and successful ‘Space movies’ in cinema history. The chapter will examine numerous memorable, famous and iconic science fiction films, most of them with a unifying theme of either being set in Space and/or involving Aliens. It will also ask whether there are inherently ‘sci-fi’ methods of composing music and if there are chord changes, orchestration techniques or melodic devices which are commonly used. Films and music discussed are: Alien (Jerry Goldsmith / Howard Hanson) Aliens (James Horner) Apollo 13 (James Horner) Independence Day, (David Arnold) Star Trek (Alexander Courage, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner and Michael Giacchano) Mission to Mars (Ennio Morricone) Batman Forever (Elliot Goldenthal) ALIEN Jerry Goldsmith Alien is a 1979 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott. The lead character is a creature that stalks and kills nearly the entire crew of a spaceship. The common mantra that Alien was to Star Wars what the Rolling Stones were to the Beatles goes some way to articulating how the film Alien is perceived by cinema-goers. Alien offers a subtle, cold, desolate environment; it lacks the usual Hollywood sheen – the razzmatazz, the glitz and the spectacle. It is a slow, plodding, brooding, dark film but one which completely captured the imagination of people who watched it.
