ITINERARY 27 July Start of cruise. Embarked Paul Murakawa (fish), Jason Leonard (fish), Jill Zamzow (fish), Dave Gulko (coral), Bernardo Vargas Angel (coral dis­ ease), Holly Bolick (invertebrates), Aline Tribollet (algae), John Mitchell (algae), Brian Zgliczynski (towed-diver survey/fish), Ben Richards (towed-diver survey/fish), Rusty Brainard (towed-diver surveylhabitat), Jake Asher (towed-diver surveylhabitat), Kyle Hogrefe (oceanography), Ron Hoeke (oceanography), Sean Guerin (oceanography), Kevin Lino (oceanography), Russell Moffitt (data manager), and Jim Bostick (dive­ master/chamber operator). Departed Honolulu at 0830, en route for Makapuu Point and Manana (Rabbit) Island off windward Oahu. An in­ troductory meeting was held for all scientific personnel and new crew­ members at 0900. A dive safety meeting was held for all divers at 0930. Medical Officer Chris Walsh was embarked via small boat from the Makai Pier at 1430. Following small boat operations, the ship departed for Kauai at 1800. At 1900, the scientific party conducted a planning meeting to dis- cuss operations for the next day. 28 July Arrived at Kauai Island at 0730 to commence field operations. The REA team (less two members) partially occupied two established sites on the northeast and north sides of the island (KAU-1, KAU-2) and established one new site off northwest Kauai (KAU-13). The team worked short- handed due to inability to launch the ship’s Zodiac Inflatable boat, HI-5, because of moderate sea conditions. The towed-diver survey team com- pleted five dives east to west from near Papaa Bay to Hanalei Bay. Found a Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) grounded on the reef at position N22 14.5208 W159 25.1988. The oceanography team deployed an ocean data platform (ODP) anchor in Hanalei Bay and conducted 13 shallow water CTD casts and performed 5 water quality profiles during which water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll and nutrient con- tents. At 1800, departed for west Molokai Island. 29 July Arrived off west end of Molokai Island at 1200 to commence reef assess- ment surveys. The REA team conducted one REA survey at site MOL-5 and aborted a second REA survey due to strong current conditions. The towed-diver survey team conducted three dives along the west end from Ilio Point south to and around Laau Point. The oceanography team recov- ered and replaced two STRs, conducted six 30-m CTD casts. During the night the ship conducted three 500-m CTD/water quality casts during which 15 water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll (15 samples) and nutrient (15 samples) content. 30 July Arrived off northwest coast of Maui Island at 0730 to commence reef as- sessment surveys. The REA team conducted three new REA surveys off Mokeehia Islet (MAI-10), Kahakuloa Point (MAI-11), and Kanounou Point (MAI-12). The towed-diver survey team conducted six dives along the windward facing northwest coast from Nehe Point to northwest to Ka- nounou Point. The oceanography team deployed one subsurface tempera- ture recorder (STR), conducted nineteen 30-m CTD casts, and performed eight water quality profiles during which water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll and nutrient contents. During the night the ship conducted two 500-m CTD/water quality casts during which 10 water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll and nutrient con- tent. 31 July Arrived off northeast coast (Alenuihaha Channel) of Maui Island at 0730 to commence reef assessment surveys. The REA team conducted three new REA surveys off Alan Islet (MAI-13), Mamalu Bay (MAI-14), and Kaapahu Bay (MAI-15). The towed-diver survey team conducted six dives 2 along the southeast coast from Alan Islet southwest to Mamalu Bay. The oceanography team conducted twenty-seven 30-m CTD casts, and per- formed nine water quality profiles during which water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll and nutrient contents. During the night the ship conducted two 500-m CTD/water quality casts during which 10 water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll and nutrient content. Ship-based multibeam mapping operations were also conducted. 01 August Continued reef assessment surveys off southeast Maui in the Alenuihaha Channel. The REA team conducted one repeat REA site at Nuu Landing (MAI-3) and two new REA surveys off Nakaohu Point (MAI-16) and in Kanaloa Bay (MAI-17). The towed-diver survey team conducted six dives along the southeast coast from Mamalu Bay southwest to Kamanamana Point. Another Fish Aggregation Device (FAD) buoy number NL was found grounded on the reef as position N20 35.6751 W156 16.2306. The oceanography team deployed an EAR and an STR in La Perouse Bay, conducted twenty-one 30-m CTD casts, and performed three water quality profiles during which water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll and nutrient contents. Command of ship assumed by CDR Carl Groeneveld as CDR Kuester, CDR Swallow, and Medical Officer Walsh disembarked via small boat to Maalaea Harbor. Embarked Medical Officer William Foust. During the night the ship conducted two 500-m CTD/water quality casts during which five water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll and nutrient content. Ship-based multibeam mapping operations were also conducted. 02 August Conducted reef assessment surveys off northeast and north Kohala coast of Hawaii Island. The REA team conducted three new REA surveys off Kohala Mountains on the windward coast (HAW-20, HAW-21, and HAW-32) The towed-diver survey team conducted five dives along the southeast coast from unnamed windward islets northwest to Upolu Point. The oceanography team recovered and replaced one STR, conducted twenty-seven 30-m CTD casts, and performed six water quality profiles during which water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chloro- phyll and nutrient contents. During the night the ship conducted one 500-m CTD/water quality casts during which five water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll and nutrient content. Ship-based multibeam mapping operations were also conducted. 03 August Conducted reef assessment surveys off southwest coast of Hawaii Island north from Ka Lae to Kauna Point. The REA team conducted three new REA surveys (HAW-22, HAW-23, and HAW-24). The towed-diver sur- vey team conducted six dives along this same coast from Kailikii Shoal to near Kauna Point. The oceanography team recovered and replaced one STR, conducted sixteen 30-m CTD casts, and performed one water quality profile during which water samples were taken to be later analyzed for 3 chlorophyll and nutrient contents. Ship-based multibeam mapping opera- tions were also conducted. 04 August Conducted reef assessment surveys off northeast coast of Lanai Island north from Shipwreck Beach to near Manele Bay. The REA team con- ducted one new REA survey off Shipwreck Beach (LAN-8) and two es- tablished sites (LAN-4 and LAN-5). The towed-diver survey team con- ducted six dives along this same coast from Shipwreck Beach to Kamaiki Point. The oceanography team recovered and replaced one STR, con- ducted twenty-three 30-m CTD casts, and performed seven water quality profiles during which water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll and nutrient contents. During the night the ship conducted two 500-m CTD/water quality casts during which 10 water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll and nutrient content. Ship-based mul- tibeam mapping operations were also conducted. 05 August Conducted reef assessment surveys off south coast of Lanai from Kaa on the east coast to Nahahoa on the west coast. The REA team conducted one new REA survey off Kaa (LAN-7) and two established sites (LAN-3 and LAN-6). The towed-diver survey team conducted five dives from Manele Bay to north of Nanahoa on the west coast. The oceanography team re- covered and replaced one STR, conducted fourteen 30-m CTD casts, and performed one water quality profile during which water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlorophyll and nutrient contents. During the night the ship conducted conducted one 500-m CTD/water quality cast during which five water samples were taken to be later analyzed for chlo- rophyll and nutrient content. 06 August Conducted reef assessment surveys off north coast of Maui from Pauwela Point to Kahului after initial launch plans further east were aborted due to adverse wind and sea conditions.

This collection represented a major range extension of the species to the northwest. Haig & McLaughlin's (1984) account of the species from Hawaii described the colouration (based on a colour illustration provided by J. Forest and M. de Saint Laurent), as "shield pink or pale orange, tip of rostrum and anterolateral corners dark orange-red". Hoover's (1998) recent photograph of the species from Hawaii shows part of the dorsal surface of the shield. The colour of the photographed specimen agrees well with that described by Haig & McLaughlin (1984) and the more recent description given by Asakura

    SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATER Ardenna tenuirostris non-breeding visitor, occasional migrant monotypic The Short-tailed Shearwater breeds on islands off S and SE Australia in Nov- May, disperses northward through the W Pacific to the Bering Sea in May-Aug, and migrates rapidly southwestward in large flights across the central Pacific, back the breeding grounds, in Sep-Nov (King 1967, Harrison 1983, AOU 1998, Howell 2012). In the Hawaiian Islands, large numbers have been recorded during well-defined pulses in fall migration, and several sight observations of one to a few birds suggest a smaller passage in spring. The Short-tailed Shearwater is extremely difficult to separate from the similar Sooty Shearwater in the field (see Sooty Shearwater), especially when viewing isolated individuals (King 1970); thus, confirmation of the spring passage with specimen or photographic evidence is desirable. Short-tailed Shearwater was placed in genus Puffinus until moved to Ardenna by the AOU (2016). At sea, Short-tailed Shearwaters were recorded in large numbers during 2002 HICEAS, with 37,874 individuals observed on 52 of 163 observing days from W of Kure to S of Oahu (Rowlett 2002; HICEAS data); they were observed from 1 Sep to 14 Nov. Over 1,000 birds were recorded on each of seven dates, with a large peak of >28,000 recorded 13-22 Sep 2002 between Midway and Lisianski and a smaller peak of >4,000 recorded 30 Oct-14 Nov between Laysan and Kaua'i. All birds were flying SSW in concentrated groups. In contrast to Sooty Shearwater, Short-taileds were clearly more abundant in Northwestern than Southeastern Hawaiian Island waters during fall passage; only 66 birds were recorded on 3 of 35 dates during this period off the Southeastern Hawaiian Islands.

    doi:10.7289/V5/DR-PIFSC-17-011 Summary of 2016 Reef Fish Surveys around Kahoolawe Island 1 Results and information presented here summarize data gathered by the Coral Reef Ecosystem Program (CREP) of NOAA’s Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and partners during 2 days of reef fish and habitat surveys around Kahoolawe Island in July/August 2016. Surveys were conducted as part of the NOAA National Coral Reef Monitoring Program. Surveys were conducted using a standard sampling design and method implemented by NOAA’s Pacific Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (Pacific RAMP) since 2009. In brief, pairs of divers record numbers, sizes, and species of fishes inside adjacent 15m-diameter ‘point- count’ cylinders and estimate benthic cover by functional groups (e.g. ‘coral’, ‘sand’). Because it is unpopulated and protected, Kahoolawe is an important reference location in in the main Hawaiian Islands and may also be a significant source of larvae and fish recruits for other parts of Maui-nui and perhaps beyond. Therefore, CREP hopes to routinely survey Kahoolawe reefs during future monitoring efforts. However, as 2016 was the first year for Kahoolawe surveys, we have a relatively small sample size there - 24 sites - in comparison to other Main Hawaiian Islands (MHI: between 107 and 257 survey sites per island). Main conclusions and observations: • Reef fish biomass was high at most sites we visited in Kahoolawe, with mean island-wide biomass higher than at any other of the MHI, although only marginally higher than at Niihau. Biomass tended to be slightly higher at sites along the southern section of the island.

Peiker Introduction to the Hawaiian Islands The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of eight primary islands and many atolls that extend for 1600 miles in the central Pacific Ocean. The larger and inhabited islands are what we commonly refer to as Hawaii, the 50 th State of the United States of America. The main islands, from east to west, are comprised of the Island of Hawaii (also known as the Big Island), Maui, Kahoolawe, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau. Beyond Niihau to the west lie the atolls beginning with Kaula and extending to Kure Atoll in the west. Kure Atoll is the last place on Earth to change days and the last place on Earth to ring in the new year. The islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii (Big Island) are the most visited and developed with infrastructure equivalent to much of the civilized world. Molokai and Lanai have very limited accommodation options and infrastructure and have far fewer people. All six of these islands offer an abundance of photographic possibilities. Kahoolawe and Niihau are essentially off-limits. Kahoolawe was a Navy bombing range until recent years and has lots of unexploded ordinance. It is possible to go there as part of a restoration mission but one cannot go there as a photo destination. Niihau is reserved for the very few people of 100% Hawaiian origin and cannot be visited for photography if at all. Neither have any infrastructure. Kahoolawe is photographable from a distance from the southern shores of Maui and Niihau can be seen from the southwestern part of Kauai.
