A staple in the region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 300 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2009-10 school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams in 2008-09, the program has expanded to 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Seven different programs earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2009-10 – a total bettered by only 13 Division III schools – and two Valiant teams ( and men’s golf) appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Fifteen of 21 Valiant teams earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including confer- ence championships for the baseball, men’s golf and men’s hockey pro- grams. Three Manhattanville teams (men’s hockey, women’s hockey and women’s soccer) also received national rankings over the course of the year, the most in a single school year since 2004-05. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2009-10 as well. A program-record four Valiants – A.J. Mikkelsen and Mickey Lang (men’s hockey), Katie Little (women’s hockey) and Dan Fiorito (baseball) received All-American accolades, while an incredible six players were named conference Player of the Year. Manhattanville athletes also earned two conference Rookie of the Year awards and a school-record 49 All-Conference honors. In the last 10 years, at least 30 former Valiants have gone on to play professionally either domestically or overseas. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well- Manhattanville Quick Facts: rounded student-athlete. Levinthal also serves as head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program. Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 48 conference championships – 25 regular-season championships and 23 tournament titles – in the last seven seasons alone. In that span, the program has also produced 25 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year. The Valiants put together another very strong overall season in 2009-10, as seven different programs achieved either a regular-season or conference tournament championship. Sixteen of the 21 Valiant programs reached their conference tournament during the year, including Freedom Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances by the men’s golf and baseball teams. Multiple teams ascended to new heights in 2009-10, including the men’s golf team, which won its conference title by an amazing 39 strokes, and the women’s soccer team, which achieved the fi rst NSCAA national ranking in program history thanks to a program-record 17 wins. On an individual level, Manhattanville produced a program-record four All-Americans, six conference Players of the Year and four conference Coaches of the Year. Manhattanville had one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2008-09, posting a cumulative department winning percentage of .548 (184- 151-6), while successfully integrating new men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track programs that raised the number of varsity sports at Manhattanville to 21. Three teams – men’s basketball, men’s and baseball – earned Freedom Conference regular-season championships, while the men’s tennis and women’s lacrosse teams set new program records for wins in a season. The Valiants also produced two All-Americans, four conference Players of the Year, three conference Coaches of the Year and three conference Rookies of the Year. In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history. Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in 2006-07, as six teams won conference championships and a program-record fi ve teams qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while two Valiant student-athletes were also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team. Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason play during the 2003-04 year. But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level academically, socially and athletically. In 2004, Levinthal received the honor of serving on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee. The NCAA selects 13 members to serve on the committee and only four from Division III institutions. Levinthal began his term on Sept. 1, 2004 and left his four-year post on at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included: Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant student- athletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies. Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni. Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye. In television, she worked in conjunction with ABC News, the Discovery Channel and HBO to produce the hit series, “The Justice Files”, as well as HBO’s Emmy award winning documentary “In Memoriam: New York City, 9/11”. 2 2011 Manhattanville Women’s Lacrosse Media Guide Coaching Staff Head Coach Anna Riordan Fourth Season • Binghamton ’07 Anna Riordan, the sixth head women’s lacrosse coach in Manhattanville history, is back for her fourth season at the helm of the Valiants in 2011.

In only three years, Riordan has produced the two highest single-season win totals in program history and recorded as many winning seasons (two) as had been achieved in the first 14 years of the program combined. With 24 wins in her first three seasons, Riordan is already the program leader in coaching victories and has the second-highest winning percentage of any Valiant coach in program history.

The 2010 season was a challenging one for Riordan and the Valiants, as the team had to replace two of the top-five scorers in program history. As a result, six different players stepped up to score at least 18 goals on the year – four of whom will be back for Manhattanville for the 2011 campaign.

Riordan followed a very successful first season with another record-setting year in 2009, guiding the Valiants to an 11-6 record, the most wins in a single season in school history. The team won its first four games of the year for the best start in program history, and concluded the season with the program’s first-ever berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament. The Valiants also found the net 234 times in 17 games, surpassing Riordan’s 2008 squad for the most goals in a single season at Manhattanville.

Riordan made a big impact in her first year at the helm of the Valiant program in 2008, recording a then-school- record nine wins in 17 games, the program’s first winning season since 2001. The team also went 4-4 in its first season in the Middle Atlantic Conference, finishing just outside the conference tournament with a fifth-place finish. The Valiants ended the season with a flurry, scoring a combined 42 goals in wins over Farmingdale State College and Arcadia University to set new school record for goals in a season with 223.

A 2007 graduate of Binghamton University, Riordan was four-year letterwinner for the Division I Bearcats. She scored 99 points in her 62-game career and was also a strong defensive player, picking up 112 ground balls. A native of Yorktown, N.Y., Riordan served as Binghamton’s captain during her senior season, starting 14 times and leading the team with 13 assists. While at The Riordan Record Binghamton, Riordan was a member of the school’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee and volunteered with the Saint Jude’s Children Hospital and Johnson City Mentor Program. Assistant Coach Liz Falco First Season • Hofstra ’10 Liz Falco was named assistant coach of the Manhattanville women’s lacrosse team in July 2010 and begins her first season with the Valiants in 2011.

Falco will be responsible for helping with all day-to-day aspects of running the Manhattanville women’s lacrosse program, including on- and off-campus recruiting, fundraising, academic monitoring, as well as game and practice preparation and instruction.

Falco brings four seasons of Division I lacrosse experience to Manhattanville, spending two years at Marist College before finishing her career with two seasons at Hofstra University. She was a four-year All-Conference performer on the turf, beginning right away when she led her Marist team with 50 goals and 58 points on the way to MAAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2007. She earned an All-MAAC second-team honor as a sophomore as she helped the Red Foxes to the first MAAC Tournament title in program history and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

At Hofstra, she ranked second on the team in scoring in both seasons while making the transition from midfielder to attacker. In her senior year, Falco was named to the IWLCA Mid-Atlantic Region second team after scoring 27 goals with 13 assists for a Pride squad that finished the season ranked 15th in the IWLCA Div. I National poll. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Hofstra in 2010.

Falco is also currently taking her game to the next level, as she was one of 62 players invited to the second round of tryouts for the U.S. National team last summer and was called back yet again for another round in 2010.

Off the field, Falco served as head coach for one of four New York teams at the Section I All-Star Tournament and also has spent three years coaching with the Yorktown Bombers Club Team. She has also coached locally at the Superstar Lacrosse Camp and the Head Heart Hustle Lacrosse Camp.

A native of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Falco currently resides in Purchase as she pursues her master’s degree in Physical Education at Manhattanville.

2011 Manhattanville Women’s Lacrosse Media Guide 19 Facilities GoValiants.com Field Completed just before the start of the Fall 2005 season, GoValiants.com Field is one of the top outdoor turf facilities in the Northeast, and serves as home to the Manhattanville lacrosse, soccer and field hockey programs. Surrounded by a new lighting system, scoreboard, press box and bleacher-style seating, GoValiants.com Field is made up of state-of-the-art Field Turf, a technology that emulates the stability and resilience of natural grass without the obvious maintenance. The field’s durability and elaborate drainage system allow the Valiants to play in all kinds of weather and also allow all 21 Manhattanville athletic teams to make use of the program for training, practice and games. The field itself measures 120 x 72 yards and the four light poles – each 90-feet high – let the Valiants play under the lights several times each year, something few other Division III programs can do. The press box at GoValiants.com Field is wired for Internet and phone access, allowing for live audio and video broadcasts of Valiant games along with use of SIDEARM Sports’ live stats program that allow fans to follow all the action when not in Purchase. There are also ample electrical outlets and a photography bay above the press box for use by media and team personnel. A high-powered sound system is also housed in the press box. The Manhattanville women’s lacrosse team has been one of the school’s most successful teams at its new field, including three winning seasons in a row from 2007-09. In 2009, the Valiants won a program-record seven games on their home turf, including wins in their first three home matches of the year on the way to the best start to a season in school history. The Valiants have only played one postseason match at home and that came before the turf of GoValiants.com Field, but the team emerged victorious with a 16-10 win over Montclair State University in the first round of the Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference Tournament back on April 30, 2003. The Valiant women’s lacrosse team earned its first victory at its new home on the team’s third try, defeating Western Connecticut State University by a dominating 18-2 score on March 27, 2006. Kennedy Gymnasium Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics and also serves as the home court for the Valiant men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. With balcony and ground-level seating for 1,000 spectators, Kennedy Gymna- sium gives the Manhattanville teams that play inside it a loud and imposing home- court advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams throughout the season. The main gymnasium also includes a new scoreboard, a brand-new scorer’s table, as well as phone and internet access that allows all Valiant games inside Kennedy Gym to be broadcast as either an audio or video stream. New lighting was recently installed in the gym as well in order to enhance the fan and player experience. In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy complex also houses a full-length swimming pool as well as the department’s strength & conditioning and sports medicine facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the building and are fully-staffed year round.

Kennedy Gym Facilities Kennedy Gym’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength & conditioning, sports medicine, locker room and office facilities, as well and a full-length swimming pool and dance studio. All in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several locker rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her own locker for the full season. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, members of the coaching staff can address their team before, during and after games, while the rooms also serve as a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The rest of the locker rooms inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker fa- cilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities, all of which are fully-staffed year round. As the day-to-day administrative home of the Manhattanville Athletic Department, the offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are also located within the Kennedy Gym walls, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics adminis- trators and support staff. Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best ac- complishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. The gym also plays host to several camps and local recreational groups during the summer and throughout the school year.

20 2011 Manhattanville Women’s Lacrosse Media Guide Support Staff Strength & Conditioning Focused on the overall development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Strength & Conditioning staff will maximize the athletic performance of Valiant student-athletes by using the most effective and effi cient training techniques to compete injury free at the highest level of competition. The aim is to instill a sense of self-discipline, respect and responsibility to achieve the ultimate goal of a team championship. The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large, state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bottom fl oor of the Athletic Department hub, Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and physioballs and cardiovascular machines that are available for student-athlete use both in and out of season as well as during the summer. In 2007, Manhattanville College opened the new Richard A. Berman Student Center in the center of campus that includes a fi rst-class workout area for the general student population; as a result, Healthworks is now the exclusive strength and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes. THE CORE VALUES Proudly a value-oriented liberal arts college for more than 150 years, Manhattanville is still guided by the mission “to educate students to become ethically and socially responsible leaders for the global community.” Manhattanville is committed to following its mission by: • Ensuring the intellectual, ethical and social development of each student within a community of engaged scholars and teachers; • Encouraging each student to develop as an independent leader and creative thinker in pursuing career and personal goals; and • Providing a diverse, inclusive and nurturing environment which develops in each student a commitment to service and leadership within a global community. MY SOLDIER Manhattanville’s most well-known social action program was founded by a Valiant student-athlete, men’s soccer player Juan Salas, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Venezuela who saw active combat duty in Iraq and was commended for saving the life of a child during his tour. Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but he continued that while the service was at times challenging, “it was the letters that kept me going. From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you want to keep for the rest of your life.” When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached former College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004.
