A staple in the region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 300 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2012-13 school year, showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. With women’s golf beginning play as a varsity sport last year, the program now sponsors 20 competitive intercollegiate teams – including eight teams that have been established or re-established in the last six years alone. And the teams at Manhattanville have proved themselves more than able to hold their own in an increasingly competitive athletic landscape. Fourteen of the school’s 20 intercollegiate programs earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, while both men’s hockey and women’s hockey teams received national rankings over the course of the year. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2012-13 as well. Field hockey junior Amanda DeChent was named the program’s fi rst-ever NFHCA All-American, giving Manhattanville at least one All-America selection in 13 of the last 14 years, while senior high jumper Bill Motherway was crowned the school’s fi rst champion at the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. Manhattanville also boasted two Freedom Conference Players of the Year to go with 45 combined All-Conference honorees. In addition, nearly 40 former Valiants have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or overseas in recent years, including former standout Dan Fiorito ’12, who signed a deal with the New York Yankees in August 2012. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well- rounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, Manhattanville Quick Facts: as evidenced by the 3.15 cumulative Athletic Department GPA for both the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters and the fact that 14 Valiant • 20 Varsity Sports teams recorded a team GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term. Levinthal has been a part of Manhattanville in some capacity for 15 years, having previously served 12 seasons as head coach of the school’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program from 1999 until 2011. Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 56 conference championships – 29 regular-season championships and 27 tournament titles – in the last decade. In that span, the program has also produced 32 conference Players of the Year, 18 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year. As a head coach with the men’s hockey team, Levinthal stepped aside with the most wins of any mentor in Manhattanville department history, posting a 202-84-28 (.688) record in 12 seasons and twice earning ECAC West Conference Coach of the Year honors. He left as the 14th winningest coach in NCAA hockey history (all Divisions) and sixth among Division III leaders in terms of winning percentage, and led the team to four NCAA Tournaments, four ECAC West Tournament titles and a pair of fi rst-place fi nishes in the ECAC West regular-season standings. Manhattanville had another successful season with Levinthal at the helm in 2012-13. While no team was able to break through with an NCAA Tournament berth, 14 of 20 teams saw postseason play. On the fi eld, the department boasted its fi rst fi eld hockey All-American in program history in junior Amanda DeChent, to go with two Freedom Conference Players of the Year (DeChent and Jessica Van Galen) and 45 All-Conference honorees. Off the fi eld, Van Galen gave Manhattanville its third straight year with a CoSIDA Academic All-American thanks to her spot on the second team, while she was also one of a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-District selections and one of the school’s 95 student-athletes recognized by their respective conferences for academic success. In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season titles and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team also advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history. Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in their fi nal season with the Skyline Conference in 2006-07, as a program-record six teams won conference championships and a record fi ve teams qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while a program-best four Valiant student-athletes were also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team. Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason play during the 2003-04 year. Four teams earned bids to ECAC postseason tournaments, while the women’s ice hockey program earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level academically, socially and athletically. In 2004, Levinthal received the honor of serving on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee. The NCAA selects 13 members to serve on the committee and only four from Division III institutions. Levinthal began his term on Sept. 1, 2004 and left his four-year post on at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies. Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni. 2 2014 Manhattanville Baseball Media Guide Coaching Staff Head Coach Jeff Caulfield 10th Season • Cortland ’00 Already the winningest coach in program history and one of the longest tenured leaders at Manhattanville, Jeff Caulfield returns for his 10th season at the helm of the Valiant baseball program in 2014.

A three-time conference Coach of the Year, Caulfield is 190-176-1 in his first nine seasons as a collegiate head coach, including an impressive 105-71 record in conference play. Over those nine seasons, Caulfield has coached two All-Americans, 16 All-Region players, three Conference Players of the Year and 43 All-Conference selections. He will become the sixth coach ever to coach a sport at Manhattanville for double-digit seasons in 2014, and also is poised to become the department’s all-time leader in wins and games coached before the end of the year.

The 2013 season saw Manhattanville reach the postseason for the second consecutive season as the fourth seed, as the Valiants pulled out two dramatic victories over FDU-Florham on the last day of the conference season to clinch a berth to the Freedom Conference Tournament. As the fourth seed, Manhattanville upset top-seeded Misericordia by a 2-1 score in 10 innings, the second straight season that the Valiants defeated the top seed. At the conclusion of the season, Caulfield saw four players earn All-Conference Honorable Mention honors, including the team’s third straight Rookie of The Year honoree in shortstop Jordanis Nunez.

In 2012, Caulfield guided a team with 18 underclassmen to a 16-22 record against a customarily difficult schedule that included seven games against nationally ranked opponents. The Valiants made the Freedom Conference Tournament for the fourth time in five seasons and defeated #10 Misericordia before bowing out of the postseason. Caulfield helped coach four All-Conference honorees on the year, including Freedom Conference Player of the Year Dan Fiorito and Freedom Rookie of the Year Michael Lyon, while Fiorito was named an ABCA third-team All-American and earned consensus All-Region honors from the ABCA and D3Baseball.com. The honor marked the eight consecutive year at least one Valiant was named to an All-Region team, and 16 of the program’s 18 All-Region honors have come under Caulfield’s watch.

Caulfield faced perhaps his toughest coaching challenge the previous year in 2011, as he had to find a way to replace nine key contributors and six everyday starters. Despite fielding the youngest roster in his tenure at Manhattanville, he guided the team to an 8-1 start, one of the best in program history. After the season, the team was recognized with four All-Freedom Conference honorees and the conference Rookie of the Year in Alex Basso, while junior Chris Nardozzi was named to the ABCA All-Region second team. In 2010, Caulfield guided the Valiants to the program’s first Freedom Conference Tournament championship and second NCAA Tournament berth with a 22-21-1 overall record, the team’s fourth straight year with a conference regular-season or tournament title. Six players were honored with spots on the All-Conference team, including Freedom Player of the Year Paul Blejec, who was one of four first-team selections and also was named to the ABCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region team. Dan Fiorito also became the first player in program history to earn All-America honors with an honorable mention from D3Baseball.com.

Caulfield was named the Freedom Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Valiants to a 26-17 overall record and the Freedom Conference regular-season championship, the program’s third straight conference regular-season title. The skipper became the second active Manhattanville coach to reach the 100-win plateau on March 8 with a 13-12 win over La Roche College. Caulfield’s players also received plenty of individual accolades, as Stephen Pinto was named the conference Player of the Year and National ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winner to lead three All-Conference honorees and two Valiants to be named to the ABCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams.

In the team’s first season with the Freedom Conference in 2008, Caulfield guided the Valiants to a 29-13 record, including a 14-4 mark in conference play. Manhattanville won a conference regular-season championship for the second consecutive season and also earned a berth in the Freedom Tournament Championship game. Four Valiants were named to the All-Conference first team to lead six overall All-Freedom honorees, while Pinto was named to the ABCA All-Region team for a second time.

Caulfield led the Valiants to the first Skyline Conference regular-season and tournament championships in program history 2007, in the process guiding Manhattanville to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The team finished the year ranked seventh in the New York Region and was comprised mainly of young talent recruited by Caulfield, as six of the Valiants’ nine starters were freshmen or sophomores. As a result, Caulfield was named Skyline Coach of the Year for a second time and the Valiants earned seven All-Conference honorees, including five on the first team, and a program-record five ABCA All-Region selections.

The 2006 Valiants also qualified for the postseason, advancing to the ECAC Metro Tournament and finishing the year 22-19, including a 13-5 mark in the Skyline Conference.

In his first season of 2005, Caulfield led the Valiants to a 23-15 mark, setting a program record for wins by a first-year coach and earning Skyline Conference Coach of the Year honors for the first time. He also coached a program-record eight All-Conference honorees, including an amazing six players on the All-Skyline first team.

Before taking the head coaching reigns of the Valiant program, Caulfield worked as an assistant at Manhattanville from 2002-04, serving as the team’s pitching coach.

A 2000 graduate of New York Region power Cortland State, Caulfield was a part of the Red Dragon team for five seasons as a player and coach, helping the team to the College World Series in each year. Caulfield also earned his Master’s Degree from in 2004.

30 2014 Manhattanville Baseball Media Guide Facilities Manhattanville Field Situated between the GoValiants.com grass field and the newly renovated Valiant softball field in the northernmost corner of Manhattanville’s suburban New York campus, Manhattanville Field is the exclusive home of the Valiant baseball team. Home to the Valiant baseball program since its inception in the early 1980s, Manhat- tanville Field continues to provide the Valiant squad with a clear home-field advantage. The field measures 405 feet to straight-away center field, 320 feet to right field and 330 feet to left field and provides generous power alleys for Valiant hitters. Manhattanville Field features bleacher seating down the first-base line and behind home plate, as well as scenic viewing areas on a berm above the right field fence and on the hill along the third-base line. A full, state-of-the-art scoreboard wireless scoreboard was added just beyond the left-center field wall in 2008 to provide fans with inning-by-inning scores, batter counts and all necessary in-game information, while spacious dugouts were recently renovated to provide a comfortable home for both the Valiants and their opponents. Other recent additions to the grounds have included a permanent wind screen along the outfield fence and protective barriers in front of both teams’ dugouts. Manhattanville also has the distinct advantage of having its own fenced-in bullpen located along the right field line, while opponents also have a bullpen area located just beyond its dugout on the third-base side as well. Over the last five years, the Valiant baseball team as posted an excellent 70-37 (.654) record at Manhattanville Field, including a 49-20 (.710) mark against conference opponents on the home field. Kennedy Gymnasium Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the home of the Manhattanville men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs, while also serving as the day-to-day operational home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics. Kennedy’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, has balcony and ground-level seating and standing room for nearly 1,000 spectators and the intimate atmosphere gives Manhattanville teams a loud and imposing home-court advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams throughout the season. The Kennedy Gym court itself was completely torn up and resurfaced in June 2013 thanks to a sizeable donation from the “Sunday Run” basketball group. The school partnered with J & J Gym Floors for the new floor, which eliminates the multitude of dead spots that plagued the 55-year old floor while also creating crisp, new graphics and a vibrant new paint job on the court itself. In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy facility also houses a full-length swimming pool as well as the department’s strength & conditioning and sports medicine facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the building and are fully-staffed year round. The offices of all Manhattanville coaches and athletic administrators are also located within the Kennedy walls, making the facility the primary meeting spot for all of Manhattanville’s varsity sports teams throughout the school year.

Kennedy Gym Facilities In addition to the basketball and volleyball arena, the Kennedy Gym building also houses the Valiants’ strength & conditioning and sports medicine departments, a swimming pool, multiple locker rooms and office facilities. The entire facility received a major overhaul during the 2012-13 school year, completely renovating almost every square inch of the venerable building. The bottom floor was completely renovated in 2012-13, including new and im- proved locker room facilities for Valiant and visiting teams. All Manhattanville locker rooms now feature new wall-to-wall carpeting, individualized wooden locker stalls with personalized nameplates, customized team white boards and video projection systems installed in every room, while the shower facilities were also given a much- needed upgrade. As a result, the rooms also serve as a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The Kennedy lobby area also received a major facelift in the spring of 2013. A new floor was installed and a large collage showcasing some of the school’s many championship teams was created, while new posters recognize all of Manhattanville’s conference championships as well as the school’s long list of All-Americans, Players of the Year and other individual award winners. Team photos of all 20 varsity sports also hang in the main lobby as well in addition to large-scale photos of some of the College’s most prolific student-athletes, while a newly created Hall of Fame display will also be unveiled in 2014 as well. As a whole, the Kennedy Gym renovations help Manhattanville keep up with the top teams in the country and allow the school to continue its unique home-field advantage both on the fields of play and in the locker room.

MY SOLDIER Manhattanville’s most well-known social action program was founded by a Valiant student-athlete, men’s soccer player Juan Salas, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Venezuela who saw active combat duty in Iraq and was commended for saving the life of a child during his tour. Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but he continued that while the service was at times challenging: “It was the letters that kept me going,” he said. “From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you want to keep for the rest of your life.” When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached then-College President Richard A. Berman with an idea.
