Heart Leads Redvers to Sea the Stars Colt
WEDNESDAY, 23 OCTOBER 2019 SMULLEN: PROMOTION OF THE SPORT IS KEY HEART LEADS REDVERS TO By Pat Smullen SEA THE STARS COLT Oisin Murphy didn't end up with a big winner on Saturday but he's had a big year and that is the important thing. On Saturday I was thinking back to the work rate he has put in this year. He has ridden all over, travelling by plane, by helicopter, however he could get there to ride horses at two different meetings in a day, wherever they may be. His work ethic is something that needs to be applauded--that's what you need to do to be champion jockey. Oisin is not only an excellent rider but he is great for the game. He promotes our industry extremely well and I hope he does so for many years to come. I must admit, earlier in the year I was hoping that Danny Tudhope would be able to pull it off as the work that Danny has to put in to maintain his weight is phenomenal, and nobody sees that behind the scenes, but it wasn't to be. BRUCE THOMAS PUMPS IT up with ELVIS COSTELLO by Dan Forte Guitar Player March 1987
BRUCE THOMAS PUMPS IT UP WITH ELVIS COSTELLO by Dan Forte Guitar Player March 1987 EVERYTHING ABOUT ELVIS Costello -his intelligent and prolific songwriting, impassioned singing, horn-rimmed visual image, ever-changing stylistic jaunts, even his anti-hero guitar playing -is so all-pervasive that his trio of sidemen, the Attractions, seems all but anonymous. (A magazine that just named Costello artist.of the year for 1986 only three years earlier misidentified the members of the Attractions in a photo caption.) But if Elvis is to be commended for his stylistic daring, the Attractions deserve equal praise for their ability to follow him down every idiomatic path, with their original fire and indelible individualism intact. Of all of Costello's talents, perhaps his strongest suit is as bandleader - not only for keeping a group together for a decade, but for choosing the musicians he did to make up his backing band. The Attractions have been together since 1977, in which time they've recorded 11 albums (plus a Best Of collection) since Elvis' debut, My Aim Is True. And night after night they have proved that at least one band (coincidentally virtually the only surviving band) from England’s punk era can play and always could. After recording his auspicious debut with uncredited backing from the American band Clover (including guitarist John McFee, currently with Southern Pacific), Declan "Elvis Costello" MacManus settled on piamst Steve Nieve, drummer Pete Thomas, and (no relation) bassist Bruce Thomas, after aluditioning, in the bassist's, words "hundreds of guys who couldn't tune up or put the guitar on right." The group's first effort, This Year's Model, not only squelched any fears of a,sophomore jinx; it kicked in with more muscle than Aim and signaled the arrival of a distinct new collective musical personality. -

Biography of Eugene O'neill
Biography of Eugene O’Neill Trevor M. Wise Eugene Gladstone O’Neill was born on October 16, 1888, at the Barrett hotel in New York city, New York, son of James o’Neill, a well-known matinee idol, and Mary Ellen (Ella) Quinlan. Much of O’Neill’s youth was spent in the wings of the theater as he toured the country with his parents and older brother Jamie, watching his father perform his most famous role—the Count of Monte Cristo. When not touring the country with his family, O’Neill attended Catholic boarding school at St. Aloysius Academy at Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx borough of New York. he then spent four years at Betts Academy, a non-sectarian prep school in Stamford, Connecticut. O’Neill spent the summers with his family at the Monte Cristo Cottage in New London, Connecticut, the only permanent home O’Neill knew as a child. in 1903, at the age of fifteen, o’Neill became aware of his mother’s morphine addiction and was introduced to alcohol by his brother Jamie, setting him on a path of heavy drinking and alcohol abuse. in the fall of 1906, o’Neill enrolled in princeton University, only to be expelled in the following spring for his poor academic per- formance. in october 1909, o’Neill secretly married Kathleen Jenkins, his first of three wives. Shortly after the wedding, o’Neill set sail for honduras to prospect for gold, but found none. While abroad, O’Neill lived the life of a waterfront derelict, working odd jobs and drinking heavily, until he contracted malaria and was forced to return to the United States. -

UNIVERSIDAD COMPLUTENSE DE MADRID FACULTAD DE FILOLOGÍA Departamento de Filología Inglesa II TESIS DOCTORAL La familia como destino Eugene O'Neill y Sam Shepard MEMORIA PARA OPTAR AL GRADO DE DOCTOR PRESENTADA POR James William Flath Directores Félix Martín Gutiérrez Gustavo Sánchez Canales Madrid, 2014 © James William Flath, 2013 UNIVERSIDAD COMPLUTENSE DE MADRID Departamento de Filología Inglesa II TESIS DOCTORAL LA FAMILIA COMO DESTINO EN EUGENE O’NEILL Y SAM SHEPARD James William Flath Madrid, 2013 Directores: Dr. Félix Martín Gutiérrez Dr. Gustavo Sánchez Canales 1 Preface and acknowledgments This dissertation represents a culmination of work, reading and learning that has taken place over the past few years. I first became interested in the plays of Eugene O’Neill when I was an undergraduate in the United States. I came upon playwright Sam Shepard much later but from the beginning the similarities between the two struck me as uncanny. What moved me particularly was the way each playwright portrayed the time-honored American institution of the Family and how both focused on the idea that I’ve come to refer to as “family as fate.” I began to ask myself, why did these playwrights write such gut-wrenchingly harrowing portrayals of the family? To exorcise their own ghosts? To come to terms with themselves? But even more compelling is the question why are we so attracted to these plays? What do we see in these plays? Ourselves, our nation? I began my research to see if anyone had devoted a full-scale study to this phenomenon and discovered that others had also noticed the similarities but none had done as in-depth a study as I wished to do. -

On Being a Jewish Author: the Trace of the Messiah in Elie Wiesel's Novels
On Being a Jewish Author: The Trace of the Messiah in Elie Wiesel’s Novels David Patterson University of Texas at Dallas n Somewhere a Master (1982), Elie Wiesel invokes a teaching from Pinchas of Koretz, a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov, founder Iof Hasidism: “To be Jewish is to link one’s fate to that of the Messiah—to that of all who are waiting for the Messiah” (23). To link one’s fate to that of the Messiah is not only to await but also to work for the coming of the Messiah, even though he may tarry— even though, if one may speak such words, he may never come. To be sure: the Messiah is the one who has forever yet to come , so that to be Jewish is to forever be engaged with an eternal yet to be . To live is to live on the edge of the yet to be . Or, for Wiesel, to live is to live in the midst of the and yet . There abides the Messiah: in the and yet . For Wiesel, to link one’s fate to that of the Messiah is to link one’s fate to the and yet , particularly after the Shoah. The Shoah al - tered forever the meaning of the Twelfth of Maimonides’ Thirteen Principles of Faith, the belief in the coming of the Messiah, even though he may tarry—a belief that would recur throughout the works and the life of Elie Wiesel. Bearing witness to the truth and the wisdom of the Jewish mes - sianic tradition was, for Wiesel, the tie that most profoundly bound L&B 38.1 2018 2 / Literature and Belief him to the Jewish tradition and therefore to Jewish life: for Wiesel the tie to Jewish tradition was his post-Holocaust connection to life, and that bond lay most profoundly in his link to the Messiah. -

However, surprisingly little has been done on Nietzsche and O'Neill. Besides a few articles which note but do not deal exhaustively with the importance of the German philosopher1 s ideas in the plays of O'Neill, there are two unpublished dissertations which explore Nietzsche's influence on O'Neill. -
Song & Music in the Movement
Transcript: Song & Music in the Movement A Conversation with Candie Carawan, Charles Cobb, Bettie Mae Fikes, Worth Long, Charles Neblett, and Hollis Watkins, September 19 – 20, 2017. Tuesday, September 19, 2017 Song_2017.09.19_01TASCAM Charlie Cobb: [00:41] So the recorders are on and the levels are okay. Okay. This is a fairly simple process here and informal. What I want to get, as you all know, is conversation about music and the Movement. And what I'm going to do—I'm not giving elaborate introductions. I'm going to go around the table and name who's here for the record, for the recorded record. Beyond that, I will depend on each one of you in your first, in this first round of comments to introduce yourselves however you wish. To the extent that I feel it necessary, I will prod you if I feel you've left something out that I think is important, which is one of the prerogatives of the moderator. [Laughs] Other than that, it's pretty loose going around the table—and this will be the order in which we'll also speak—Chuck Neblett, Hollis Watkins, Worth Long, Candie Carawan, Bettie Mae Fikes. I could say things like, from Carbondale, Illinois and Mississippi and Worth Long: Atlanta. Cobb: Durham, North Carolina. Tennessee and Alabama, I'm not gonna do all of that. You all can give whatever geographical description of yourself within the context of discussing the music. What I do want in this first round is, since all of you are important voices in terms of music and culture in the Movement—to talk about how you made your way to the Freedom Singers and freedom singing.
