The wines on the following page are very limited release, some available only at the winery and at the New Sheridan Chop House in Telluride, Colorado. They represent the various wineries prize offerings, from powerful single-vineyard Zinfandels from Seghesio in Sonoma County, to elegant terroir-inspired Pinot Noirs from Archery Summit in Willamette Valley, to unique expressions of Chardonnay from Chamisal Vineyards. These wines are exciting, beautifully crafted masterpieces, that are sure to elate the most discerning critic as well as the wine neophyte. Pine Ridge Winery- Pine Ridge began making great wine in Napa Valley over 30 years ago and continues to refine its wine-making technique. Painstaking measures are taken to produce wines similar in style to their Bordeaux/Burgundian counterparts. Old world aesthetics with new world savvy. Chamisal Vineyards- This winery is located in the Edna Valley, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. A perfect combination of an extended growing season and calcareous, volcanic soils produce flavorful wines that are bold and distinctive. Unique wines with character. Archery Summit- Situated in Oregon’s Dundee Hills, Archery Summit is at an ideal location to cultivate perfect Pinot Noir grapes. Mineral rich soils, long sunny days and cool breezy nights contribute to superior fruit. Delicate handling of this fragile grape at every stage results in wines that are both pretty and powerful. Seghesio Family Vineyards- Edoardo Seghesio purchased his first vineyard in Alexander Valley in 1895. Since then, the Seghesio Family has produced some of the finest wines in Sonoma County. Long warm days and shallow, mineral laden topsoil produce opulent fruit with low yields for excellent Zinfandel and other varietals. Double Canyon Vineyards- Named after the two ravines that run through the property, Double Canyon produces exclusively estate-grown wine that express the individuality of the vineyards in the distinctive, windswept desert between Washington’s Yakima Valley and Colombia River. Exceptional devotion to vineyard maintenance and generational knowledge of climate and terroir has allowed Double Canyon’s William Beightol, to produce exceptional fruit vintage after vintage. 2 FEATURED WHITE WINES 144 Chardonnay, Pine Ridge, Dijon Clones, Carneros, Napa Valley, California 2014 90 104 Chardonnay, Chamisal, Califa, Edna Valley, California 2010 100 141 Chardonnay, Pine Ridge, Les Petite Clos, Napa Valley, California 2011 130 FEATURED RED WINES 369 Syrah, Chamisal, Califa, Edna Valley, California 2009 125 252 Pinot Noir, Chamisal, Morrito, Edna Valley, California 2010 225 292 Pinot Noir, Chamisal, Monologue, Edna Valley, California 2010 225 365 Pinot Noir, Archery Summit, Whole Cluster Cuvée, Dundee Hills, Oregon 2014 175 315 Pinot Noir, Archery Summit, Renegade Ridge Estate, Dundee Hills, Oregon 2010 195 248 Pinot Noir, Archery Summit, Looney Vineyard, Ribbon Ridge, Willamette Valley, Oregon 2011 195 355 Pinot Noir, Archery Summit, Estate , Dundee Hills, Willamette Valley, Oregon 2008 275 288 Zinfandel, Seghesio, Home Ranch, Alexander Valley, Sonoma, California 2012 150 233 Sangiovese, Seghesio, Venom, Alexander Valley, Sonoma, California 2011 150 280 Cabernet Sauvignon, Pine Ridge, Stag’s Leap District, Napa Valley, California 2012 250 394 Cabernet Sauvignon, Pine Ridge, Fortis, Napa Valley, California 2012 375 3 WHITE WINES BY THE GLASS Bouchard Aîné & Fils, Rosé, Grenache/Cinsault, Languedoc-Roussillon, France 2015 9 Scarpetta, Pinot Grigio, Delle Venezie, Italy 2015 10 Nortico, Alvarinho, Minho, Portugal 2014 10 Chamisal, Stainless, Chardonnay, Edna Valley, California 2014 12 Pine Ridge, Viognier/Chenin Blanc, California 2014 12 Trimbach, Riesling, Alsace, France 2013 12 Cloudy Bay, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand 2015 16 Val de Mer, Chardonnay, Chablis, France 2013 19 Rombauer, Chardonnay, Carneros, Napa Valley, California 2014 22 SPARKLING WINES BY THE GLASS Astoria Lounge, Moscato, Piedmont, Italy NV 10 Tiamo, Prosecco, Italy NV 13 Graham Beck, Brut Rosé, South Africa, NV 14 Moët & Chandon, Brut Impérial, Épernay, Champagne, France, NV 20 RED WINES BY THE GLASS Domaine de Cristia, Côte du Rhône, Grenache, Rhône, France 2014 10 Domaine Bernard Moreau, Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy, France 2014 14 Arrowood, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County, California 2013 14 Sierra Cantabria, Crianza, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Rioja, Spain 2012 14 Terrazas de los Andes, Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina 2014 15 Smoke Tree, Pinot Noir, Sonoma County, California 2014 16 Seghesio, Zinfandel, Sonoma County, California 2014 16 Château Plaisance, Cuvée Alix, Premières Côtes de Bordeaux, France 2005 18 Paul Jaboulet Aîne, Syrah, Crozes-Hermitage, Rhône, France 2013 19 Bodegas Faustino, Gran Reserva, Tempranillo, Rioja, Spain 2004 25 Azelia, Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy 2012 26 Merryvale Estate, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California 2010 30 La Fiorita, Brunello di Montalcino, Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy 2008 40* La Jota Vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain, Napa Valley, California 2003 55* Our wines by the glass are preserved in our state-of-the-art Enomatic wine-dispensing unit *These wines are poured through cutting-edge Coravin Wine Access Technology. 4 SPARKLING WINES Bin no. 008 Tomassi, Filodora, Prosecco, Veneto, Italy NV 38 007 Casteller, Brut, Cava, Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Spain NV 42 025 Château de Brézé, Crémant de Loire, Loire Valley, France NV 56 026 Nino Franco, Prosecco Superiore, Valdobbiadene, Veneto, Italy NV 60 009 Domaine Chandon, Sparkling Rosé, California NV 65 005 Ayala, Brut Mejeur, Ay, France NV 85 011 Schramsberg, Blanc de Blancs, Calistoga, California 2013 90 006 Nicolas Feuillatte, Brut, Chouilly, France NV 95 027 H. • THE SCIENCE BEHIND the NAPA VALLEY APPELLATION an Examination of the Geology, Soils, and Climate That Define Napa Valley As a Premier Grape Growing Region
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE NAPA VALLEY APPELLATION An examination of the geology, soils, and climate that define Napa Valley as a premier grape growing region. By Gerald D. Boyd Napa Valley is a name that conjures up many images, thoughtful reflections and names of legends and leaders that are emblematic of the contemporary meaning of the valley as a major wine region. In 1966, with the opening of his eponymous winery in Oakville, Robert Mondavi, Napa’s elder statesman, recognized the unique qualities of Napa Valley soils and the wines they produced. “We knew then that we had the climate, the soil and the varieties that made our own distinct style of wine that could be the equal of the great wines of the world, but it did require the winegrowing and the wisdom to know how to present it to the world.” By the early 1970s, in another part of the country, I became acutely aware of Napa’s growing reputation when I made my first wine trip to France. As a newly minted wine writer, based in Colorado, I sensed that California wines were on the verge of making a major impact in the world wine market and that Colorado was hardly a thriving wine region. Fact is, although California wines were gaining shelf space in Denver, it was clear that Americans were then more Euro-centric in their wine tastes. It was a sign I took to heart while planning for my first trips as a wine writer. I mistakenly figured that the French winemakers on my travel itinerary would be well versed on California wine, so I should be prepared.

In attendance will be proprietors from more than 40 wineries in 13 global wine-producing regions, eight countries, and three continents. FWM_SanMateoProgCover_final_bleed_Layout 1 5/13/14 3:21 PM Page 1 —From Our Table To Yours— Family Winemakers . .fi ghting for small, family-owned wineries Family Small, family-owned wine producers across the state are the foundation of Family Winemakers of California. Formed in 1990 to lobby for the rights Winemakers of its members to freely produce, market and sell their products, we currently represent over 450 producers. of California Direct-to-consumer sales blossomed after the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in Granholm v. Tasting Heald. Now consumers in 41 states have a broader choice in wine. .and it’s because FWC provided key funding and steered the litigation battle. FWC has worked to keep taxes and fees on wine from rising, created new wine sales opportunities like farmers markets and event permits, stopped vine-killing pests, pushed for smart water rules, fought misguided labeling, and lobbied to keep state alcohol law up-to-date on the use of technology. Our legislative and regulatory work is augmented by the trade and consumer tastings we organize for our members to help them succeed in a highly competitive marketplace. This is our 24th year hosting events in the state. FWC’s fi rst tasting was held in 1991 at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Many of our members pour at our Bay Area tasting, as well as in Southern California. The wineries at these tastings are just as dedicated today as they were in the beginning to producing the fi nest wines they can. You’ll taste their passion captured in each bottle.
