  • THE SCIENCE BEHIND the NAPA VALLEY APPELLATION an Examination of the Geology, Soils, and Climate That Define Napa Valley As a Premier Grape Growing Region
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE NAPA VALLEY APPELLATION An examination of the geology, soils, and climate that define Napa Valley as a premier grape growing region. By Gerald D. Boyd Napa Valley is a name that conjures up many images, thoughtful reflections and names of legends and leaders that are emblematic of the contemporary meaning of the valley as a major wine region. In 1966, with the opening of his eponymous winery in Oakville, Robert Mondavi, Napa’s elder statesman, recognized the unique qualities of Napa Valley soils and the wines they produced. “We knew then that we had the climate, the soil and the varieties that made our own distinct style of wine that could be the equal of the great wines of the world, but it did require the winegrowing and the wisdom to know how to present it to the world.” By the early 1970s, in another part of the country, I became acutely aware of Napa’s growing reputation when I made my first wine trip to France. As a newly minted wine writer, based in Colorado, I sensed that California wines were on the verge of making a major impact in the world wine market and that Colorado was hardly a thriving wine region. Fact is, although California wines were gaining shelf space in Denver, it was clear that Americans were then more Euro-centric in their wine tastes. It was a sign I took to heart while planning for my first trips as a wine writer. I mistakenly figured that the French winemakers on my travel itinerary would be well versed on California wine, so I should be prepared.

  • Beef Liver and Onions
Beef Liver and Onions Tonight’s liver & onions entree was the best I’ve ever eaten in my lifetime. The liver was very tender and mild flavored. Perhaps contributing to the tenderness was the fact I did soak the liver in milk first for about four hours. Also, it seemed one teaspoon sugar was adequate because I used sweet Spanish onion, sliced rather than diced. Another thing I did was cut the liver slices into smaller pieces, added salt and onion powder to flour, and after dredging, browned quickly in batches. This recipe as I made tonight is company perfect–absolutely delicious for liver lovers and a special taste treat for those who say they don’t care for liver. delicious! although my bf said it was very good, he also explained to me, that when he cooks his liver, he adds water to it about 3/4 of the way through cooking and lets it simmer for 15 min. claims it makes the liver much more tender This recipe is ABSOLUTLY wonderful !!! The sugar takes away the bitterness of the liver. You would have to have ZERO tastebuds to say this is a bad recipe or just not like liver !! Will make again ! Fantastic.I love the camelized onions.I use sweet onions and I fry my whole pieces of liver in bacon fat.I also add one cup of water and alittle beef soup base.Simmer for about 15 minutes.Fantastic gravy for mashed potatoes. For Ingredients And Complete Cooking Instructions Please Head On Over To Next Page Or Open button (>) and don’t forget to SHARE with your Facebook friends Ingredients: 1/4 cup flour 1 lb beef liver 1/4-1/2 cup butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper oil, to taste 1 -2 tablespoon fresh sage, minced 2 cups thinly sliced onions 1/2 cup beef stock 1 tablespoon minced Italian parsley 1/4 cup dry white wine Directions: Combine flour, salt and pepper in bag.

Contact: Lana Gersten | 312.846.1655 | [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wine Industry Giants to Descend on Florida this January for the 16th Annual Naples Winter Wine Festival Naples, FL – September 8, 2015 – A star-studded lineup featuring some of the most celebrated vintners from around the world will head to Naples, Florida for the 16th annual Naples Winter Wine Festival, taking place from January 29-31, 2016. In attendance will be proprietors from more than 40 wineries in 13 global wine-producing regions, eight countries, and three continents. These top vintners will pour some of the most sought-after and collectable wines in the world for Festival guests. “One reason the Naples Winter Wine Festival is so special is that we consistently attract the world’s most beloved and celebrated vintners,” said Sandi Moran, Vintner Chair and Co-Chair of the 2016 Festival. “The influence of this year’s vintners on the global wine world is unparalleled, and we are so grateful that they are contributing their time to help us raise millions of dollars for children in need.” Leading the impressive lineup are Paul and Emily Michael of the Peter Michael Winery, who have been selected as Honored Vintners because of their unwavering commitment to the Festival and uncanny ability to produce many of the most highly rated wines in the world. Of the 214 reviews of their wine by legendary critic Robert Parker, Jr., 200 were awarded 90 or more points and five received perfect 100- point scores. Also in attendance will be Ted Baseler of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Bo Barrett of Chateau Montelena, who will hold a special tasting on January 28, one day before the Festival officially begins, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the “Judgment of Paris.” At this notable event in U.S.

Formed in 1990 to lobby for the rights Winemakers of its members to freely produce, market and sell their products, we currently represent over 450 producers. of California Direct-to-consumer sales blossomed after the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in Granholm v. Tasting Heald. Now consumers in 41 states have a broader choice in wine. .and it’s because FWC provided key funding and steered the litigation battle. FWC has worked to keep taxes and fees on wine from rising, created new wine sales opportunities like farmers markets and event permits, stopped vine-killing pests, pushed for smart water rules, fought misguided labeling, and lobbied to keep state alcohol law up-to-date on the use of technology. Our legislative and regulatory work is augmented by the trade and consumer tastings we organize for our members to help them succeed in a highly competitive marketplace. This is our 24th year hosting events in the state. FWC’s fi rst tasting was held in 1991 at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Many of our members pour at our Bay Area tasting, as well as in Southern California. The wineries at these tastings are just as dedicated today as they were in the beginning to producing the fi nest wines they can. You’ll taste their passion captured in each bottle.
