U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Region Five History Project Interview with: Paul Barker Interviewed by: Phil Aune Location: Spokane, Washington Date: sometime in 2006 Transcribed by: Mim Eisenberg/WordCraft; October 2006 [Begin CD Track 18. (no Tracks 1-17)] PHIL AUNE: This is Track 18. This is the Paul Barker interview. This is Phil Aune [pronounced AW-nee]. The last name is spelled A-u-n-e. And I’m interviewing former regional forester Paul Barker. Paul, I’d like to start out the interview. Please tell us briefly what got you interested in forestry as a young man. PAUL BARKER: My interest in forestry began in scouting and was amplified through a biology class in high school. When I was in the ninth grade, my second grade teacher asked if I would help her by taking some tests. She was working on her master’s degree in counseling. The test results indicated I had a high aptitude for forestry. I was accepted at the University of Idaho, College of Forestry and began my professional education the fall of 1953. AUNE: Given that, if you went to University of Idaho, what were your school years like at Idaho, and did you have jobs with the Forest Service in the summertime, or how did that work? BARKER: I started working for the Forest Service right after high school graduation. Full time employees on the ranger district were the District Ranger, Alternate Ranger, Packer, and District Clerk. The district had just sold a couple of timber sales in an effort to salvage trees being killed by the spruce bark beetle.

  • DEAD CHANNEL SURFING: Cyberpunk and Industrial Music
DEAD CHANNEL SURFING: Cyberpunk and industrial music In the early 1980s from out of Vancouver, home of cyberpunk writer William Gibson and science fiction film-maker David Cronenberg, came a series of pioneering bands with a similar style and outlook. The popular synth-pop band Images in Vogue, after touring with Duran Duran and Roxy Music, split into several influential factions. Don Gordon went on to found Numb, Kevin Crompton to found Skinny Puppy, and Ric Arboit to form Nettwerk Records, which would later release Skinny Puppy, Severed Heads, Moev, Delerium and more. Controversial band Numb ended up receiving less attention than the seminal Skinny Puppy. Kevin Crompton (now called Cevin Key) joined forces with Kevin Ogilvie (Nivek Ogre) and began their career by playing in art galleries. After their friend Bill Leeb quit citing ‘creative freedom’ disputes, they embarked on a new style along with the help of newly recruited Dwayne Goettel. Leeb would go on to found Front Line Assembly with Rhys Fulber in 1986. The style of music created by these bands, as well as many similar others, has since been dubbed ‘cyberpunk’ by some journalists. Cyberpunk represents an interesting coupling of concepts. It can be dissected, as Istvan Csiscery-Ronay has shown, into its two distinct parts, ‘cyber’ and ‘punk’. Cyber refers to cybernet- ics, the study of information and control in man and machine, which was created by U.S. American mathematician Norbert Wiener fifty years ago. Wiener fabricated the word from the Greek kyber- netes, meaning ‘governor’, ‘steersman’ or ‘pilot’ (Leary, 1994: 66). The second concept, punk, in the sense commonly used since 1976, is a style of music incorporating do-it-yourself (d.i.y) techniques, centred on independence and touting anarchist attitudes.

  • INITIALS C.C. Liner Notes
Chris Connelly : INITIALS C.C. Out-takes, Rarities and Personal Favourites 1982-2002 vol.1 01. Detestimony – Fini Tribe: This was the “A” side of an EP called “Let the Tribe Grow,” written and recorded when the Fini Tribe was going through great musical changes. We had acquired an Ensoniq ‘Mirage’ sampling keyboard, and as was the same for a lot of bands at the time, it changed everything, opened up a lot of doors, and led us into some very uncharted waters. The actual piece was whittled down from a fifteen-minute opus we had written. I remember being in Philip Pinsky’s bedroom one night with John Vick. Philip’s then-roommate, Lindsay, gave us an old quarter-inch reel of tape he had. On it was a beautiful recording of the church bells you hear on the song; we sampled them and came up with the melody. The EP actually did better than any of us had anticipated and became a sort of hit in the Ibiza clubs at the very advent of the acid house/rave phenomenon. We actually went ahead and re-wrote/re- structured the song for the WaxTrax! Records release (“Make it Internal/Detestimony Revisited”) a couple of years later. 02. Mania – Murder Inc.: Certainly what I feel is the most compelling song on the one and only album released by Murder Inc. The band was basically Killing Joke, minus Jaz Coleman (Killing Joke’s singer), plus me, as well as the original drummer, Paul Fergusson, and newer drummer, Martin Atkins. The sessions took place at Pachyderm Studios in rural Minnesota during September of 1991.
