JUSTIN BIEBER FEATURING SLIPKNOT: Consumption as Mode of Production Ragnhild Brøvig-Hanssen A musical mash-up typically consists of two recognizable recordings that are synchronized such that the vocal(s) of one track are combined with an instrumental version of the other without significant edits.1 The ontological presence of a mash-up band is thus only to be found in the virtual domain––that is, the artists in question have never actually performed together. The virtual music collaborations enabled by mash-up producers invite us to encounter the musical result in ways that are very different from those we apply to non- virtual music collaborations, and, as scholars, we are therefore compelled to analyze the music in a different way as well. Moreover, mash-up music encourages us to rethink what musical authorship, creativity, and musicality means to us today. Because mash-ups often consist of nothing but macro-samples, and often simply of two full-length samples that have hardly been edited at all, mash-up producers have been criticized for lacking talent and creativity; for example, McLeod writes: “Despite my appreciation of them, I do not mean to idealise mash-ups because, as a form of creativity, they are quite limited and limiting.”2 This perspective might also help to explain why scholars usually approach the musical mash-up from a sociological or juridical orientation with a focus on its extramusical features, and, in 1 I am very grateful to Anne Danielsen, Hedda Høgåsen-Hallesby, Nils Nadeau, and Sheila Whiteley for their insightful comments on this chapter. -

More recently, studies have neglected content analysis due to perceived homogeneity in themes, despite evidence that the modern genre is distinct from its past. As lyrical patterns are strong markers of genre, this study attempts to characterize heavy metal in the 21st century by analyzing lyrics for specific themes and perspectives. Citing evidence that the “Millennial” generation confers significant developments to popular culture, the contemporary genre is termed “Millennial heavy metal” throughout, and the study is framed accordingly. -
Slipknot – Iowa (2001)
Slipknot – Iowa (2001) Album named after the band's home state of Iowa Bio of the band: Slipknot is a heavy-metal band consisting of nine members, all of whom are male, who became popular because of its extreme music and dramatic stage performances. This group was first formed in the late 1995 in the unlikely locale of Des Moines, IA. It had 3 percussionists, 2 guitarists, 1 bassist, a DJ, a sampler and a lead singer. Aside from their real names, members of the band are also referred to by numbers 0 through 8 and each of them also wears a mask, which they said is part of their personality, like an extension of their body. To explain that, all the group members believe that wearing the masks shows more of what they are like inside and what the music does to them inside. Members include: #1 Joey Jordon- drums (1995-2013) # 2 Paul Gray- bass (1995-2010) #3 Chris Fehn- percussion (1998– present) #4 Jim Root – guitar (1999 – present) #5 Craig Jones - samples (1996 – present) #6 Shawn Crahan -percussion (1995 – present) #7 Mick Thompson -guitar (1996 – present) #8 Corey Taylor - vocals (1997 – present) #9 Sid Wilson - DJ (1998 – present) Iowa Biography: The state of Iowa is probably best known as "the middle of nowhere." Most non-residents consider it the corn-and-pig-state, a geographical black hole. After a couple years of relentless touring in support of their self-titled breakthrough album, Slipknot regrouped to record Iowa, an ode to their home state that consolidates and punctuates everything that had garnered the band its cultish following. -

Red Hot Chili Peppers Group 3 Kaitlin Gaedtke Lauren Lalumiere Maisey Pierce Why the Red Hot Chili Peppers? The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an innovative rock group formed in the early 80s. They have seemingly always been hugely influential in the style of rock and alternative rock. Still successful in creating music and performing today. Group Biography RHCP were formed from a California high school friendship and a mutual appreciation for punk rock and funk. Started out as “Tony Flow & the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem,” this is also where their performing nude “trademark” started They began a recording contract with EMI and gained popularity when their videos were featured on MTV Group Biography (Cont.) Several members fought drug addiction along the way; one (Slovak) even died from a heroin overdose. They’ve had many different members but current members Kiedis and Flea are founders Flea (left in both pictures) and Kiedis (right in both pictures) have been friends since they went to highschool together! Current Members Anthony Kiedis: lead vocals (1983-present) Flea: bass, trumpet, piano, backing vocals (1983-present) Chad Smith: drums, percussion (1988-present) Josh Klinghoffer: guitar, keyboards, backing vocals (2009-present) Anthony Kiedis: went to highschool with Flea in California, where they acknowledged their mutual admiration of punk rock and funk groups by forming a band together. talent for poetry and was convinced by Flea and Slovak to write music. Even after his friend Slovak’s death due to an overdose, Kiedis still battled a drug addiction. In the 2000’s, he attempted to turn his autobiography called “Scar Tissue” into a TV show, which failed. -

Chris Connelly : INITIALS C.C. Out-takes, Rarities and Personal Favourites 1982-2002 vol.1 01. Detestimony – Fini Tribe: This was the “A” side of an EP called “Let the Tribe Grow,” written and recorded when the Fini Tribe was going through great musical changes. We had acquired an Ensoniq ‘Mirage’ sampling keyboard, and as was the same for a lot of bands at the time, it changed everything, opened up a lot of doors, and led us into some very uncharted waters. The actual piece was whittled down from a fifteen-minute opus we had written. I remember being in Philip Pinsky’s bedroom one night with John Vick. Philip’s then-roommate, Lindsay, gave us an old quarter-inch reel of tape he had. On it was a beautiful recording of the church bells you hear on the song; we sampled them and came up with the melody. The EP actually did better than any of us had anticipated and became a sort of hit in the Ibiza clubs at the very advent of the acid house/rave phenomenon. We actually went ahead and re-wrote/re- structured the song for the WaxTrax! Records release (“Make it Internal/Detestimony Revisited”) a couple of years later. 02. Mania – Murder Inc.: Certainly what I feel is the most compelling song on the one and only album released by Murder Inc. The band was basically Killing Joke, minus Jaz Coleman (Killing Joke’s singer), plus me, as well as the original drummer, Paul Fergusson, and newer drummer, Martin Atkins. The sessions took place at Pachyderm Studios in rural Minnesota during September of 1991.
