It profiles growth and development of passenger travel market in India. Along with a historical and evolutionary account of modal share underscoring the ecosystem in which the market has functioned, an imperative need for an optimal modal mix is suggested in the interest of the economy as well as environment. Pricing and cost matrix is an important element, so also the demand and supply analysis, particularly of rail services, for investment planning. Some essential features are catalogued by way of lessons learnt for an optimal modal share, which, in turn, implies judicious investments for capacity build-up and development. INTRODUCTION Serving a land area of 3.3 million square km and a population of over one billion, India's transport system is one of the world’s largest. Since 1950-51, marking the commencement of economic planning era in the country, there has been a significant change in the modal split of passenger traffic. -

The important role of cities in national economic process and their global linkages demand more attention for their development, than being hitherto given. Cities are expected to perform efficiently in keeping with emerging demands for employment, commerce, trade, industry and other services. Cities have to attract investments for improving their efficiencies by way of up to date infrastructure, improved governance and affordable housing/living with modern amenities. Urban renewal of Indian cities has been initiated to achieve the objectives. According to census of India, the urban population in the country as 2011 was 377 million. This constituted 31.16% of the total population of 1210 millions. The net addition of population in urban areas during the decade 2001‐2011 was about 91 million The slum census, 2001 in towns with more than 50,000 population, numbering 607, reported 40.606 million slum dwellers which amounted to 22.76% of the population living in those 607 towns/cities. This implies, nearly one out of every four persons reside in slums in our cities & towns. Slums generally lack basic infrastructure, housing, social amenities and this has implications on health and productivity of the people living in such areas. -

Speech of Shri Lalu Prasad Introducing the Railway Budget 2006-07 On 24th February 2006 1. Mr. Speaker Sir, I rise to present the Budget Estimates 2006-07 for the Indian Railways at a point in time when, there has been a historical turn around in the financial situation of the Indian Railways. Our fund balances have grown to Rs. 11,000 cr and our internal generation, before dividend has also reached a historic level of Rs. 11,000 cr. With this unprecedented achievement, we are striding to realize the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s dream of making Indian Railways the premier railway of the world. Sir, this is the same Indian Railways which, in 2001 had deferred dividend payment, whose fund balances had reduced to just Rs. 350 cr and about which experts had started saying that it is enmeshed a terminal debt trap. You might term this a miracle, but I was confident that : “Mere zunu ka natija zaroor niklega, isee siaah samandar se noor niklega.” 2. Sir, the whole nation can see today that track is the same, railwaymen are the same but the image of Indian Railways is aglow. This has been the result of the acumen, devotion and determination of lakhs of railwaymen. Sir, the general perception so far has been that Railways’ finances cannot be improved without increasing second class passenger fares. But my approach is entirely different. In my view, improvements can only be brought about by raising the quality of services, reducing unit costs and sharing the resultant gain with customers. Therefore, instead of following the beaten path, we decided to tread a new one. -

LOK SABHA ___ SYNOPSIS OF DEBATES (Proceedings other than Questions & Answers) ______ Thursday, March 12, 2015 / Phalguna 21, 1936 (Saka) ______ OBITUARY REFERENCE HON'BLE SPEAKER: I have to inform the House about the sad demise of two former members Shri Ram Sunder Das and Shri Dadashivrao Dadoba Mandlik. Shri Ram Sunder Das was a member of the Tenth and Fifteenth Lok Sabhas representing the Hajipur Parliamentary Constituency of Bihar. Shri Ram Sunder Das served as a Member of the Business Advisory Committee; General Purposes Committee and Committee on Energy during the Fifteenth Lok Sabha. Earlier, Shri Ram Sunder Das served as the Chief Minister of Bihar from April, 1979 to February, 1980. He was also a member of Bihar Legislative Council from 1968 to 1977 and Bihar Legislative Assembly from 1977 to 1980. Shri Ram Sunder Das passed away on 6 march, 2015 in Patna at the age of 94. Shri Sadashivrao Dadoba Mandlik was a member of the Twelfth, Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Lok Sabhas representing the Kolhapur Parliamentary Constituency of Maharashtra. An able parliamentarian, Shri Mandlik served as a member of various parliamentary committees during his long and active career. Earlier, Shri Mandlik was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for four terms from 1972 to 1978 and 1968 to 19998 and served as Minister of State, irrigation, Education and Resettlement in the Government of Maharashtra from 1993 to 1995. Shri Sadashivrao Dadoba Mandlik passed away on 10th March, 2015, 2015 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra at the age of 80. We deeply mourn the loss of our former colleagues and I am sure the House would join me in conveying our condolences to the bereaved families.
