CHAPTER I SAFETY RECORD OF INDIAN RAILWAYS 1.1 Indian Railways is the largest railway network under a single management in the world. It has a route kilometrage of nearly 63,273 kms, an operating fleet of 4, 69,553 wagons (in terms of 4-wheelers), 50,724 coaching vehicles and 8,330 locomotives. 1.2 During 2007-2008, on an average, 17,754 trains, including 10,385 passenger carrying trains were run daily. Nearly 18 million passengers were booked daily and 804.11 million tonnes of freight traffic was loaded during the year. With such a massive utilisation of assets, safety is of paramount importance for operational efficiency. A very high priority is accorded to safety to enable Railways to achieve still greater heights of performance. Consequential Train Accidents 1.3 The term ‘accident’ envelopes a wide spectrum of occurrences with or without significant impact on the system. Consequential train accidents include mishaps with serious repercussion in terms of loss of human life or injury, damage to railway property or interruption to rail traffic of laid down threshold levels and values. These consequential train accidents include collisions, derailments, fire in trains, road vehicles colliding with trains at level crossings, and certain specified types of ‘miscellaneous’ train mishaps. Incidence of Train Accidents 1.4 The number of consequential train accidents decreased from 194 (excluding one train accident on Konkan Railway) during 2006-2007 to 193 (excluding one train accident on Konkan Railway) during 2007-2008. The number of train accidents per million train kilometres, which is the universally accepted safety index, also dropped from 0.23 in 2006-07 to 0.22 in 2007-2008. -

International Journal of Multidisciplinary Approach and Studies ISSN NO:: 2348 – 537X Prognosis of Human Rights and Child Trafficking in Bihar: A Sociometric Analysis Nikhat Shama Research Scholar, Department of Political Science Jamia Millia Islamia , New Delhi ABSTRACT: Human trafficking, or trafficking in persons, is a form of modern-day slavery and millions of people around the world, including children are victims of this crime (DeStefano, 2007).Violations of human rights are both a cause and a consequence of human trafficking (Robinson, 2002). Every country in the world is affected by human trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit, or destination, and commonly, as all three. Human trafficking is not just a problem in other countries; cases of human trafficking have also been reported in India, which shares a large border with Nepal and Bangladesh. Under the garb of migration, the traffickers have become active and a large number of young girls are being trafficked from both Bangladesh and Nepal to various places in India, especially to Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi. Despite increased attention and response to the topic of human trafficking, the empirical state of the literature has seen only marginal developments over time, leaving the magnitude of the problem unknown.The literature on trafficking reflects the dilemma of writing on a subject that is not easy to research and document and yet is too grave an issue to ignore. Considering the hidden and criminal nature of the problem, the data presented by most reports is valuable in face of this scarcity. While the adopted definitions, perspectives and approaches to the problem of trafficking may vary the concern with finding effective solutions is common to these studies. -

Imperial Technology and ‘Native’ Agency This book explores the impact of railways on colonial Indian society from the commencement of railway operations in the mid-nineteenth to the early decades of the twentieth century. The book represents a historiographical departure. Using new archival evidence as well as travelogues written by Indian railway travellers in Bengali and Hindi, this book suggests that the impact of railways on colonial Indian society were more heterogeneous and complex than anticipated either by India’s colonial railway builders or currently assumed by post-colonial scholars. At a related level, the book argues that this complex outcome of the impact of railways on colonial Indian society was a product of the interaction between the colonial context of technology transfer and the Indian railway passengers who mediated this process at an everyday level. In other words, this book claims that the colonised ‘natives’ were not bystanders in this process of imposition of an imperial technology from above. On the contrary, Indians, both as railway passengers and otherwise influenced the nature and the direction of the impact of an oft-celebrated ‘tool of Empire’. The historiographical departures suggested in the book are based on examining railway spaces as social spaces – a methodological index influenced by Henri Lefebvre’s idea of social spaces as means of control, domination and power.
