3 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Springwood Cricket Club has had a great year on and off the field and I continue to be proud of the way we play the game and the values we drive as a club. This approach to our game starts from our Milo Have-A Go program co-ordinated by Adam Thomas through to our Under 8’s a to Under 16 competitions right through to our seniors. In addition, as with all years, there is much that also goes on behind the scenes by many people to enable our cricketers to take the field and I’m very grateful for these ever passionate volunteers for their time and energies.

As a Club, we continue our strive to 'Increase Participation in Cricket' and to this extent, Springwood Cricket Club remains one of the strongest contributors to our local area. Through this participation, I continually see great performances from individuals right across sides, not just the standout in each team. Congratulations to all our players who competed this year. Also, a big thank you to all our volunteers including the Junior coaches and managers and the Senior Captains (and managers) and the Have-A- Go Volunteers. The fact that these individuals step forward and take on these roles means a better season for us all - so thank you.

This year we were all affected by the terrible bush fires that took place in October with a number of our own Springwood Cricket families directly impacted. Through the rallying of our club and the coming together of the cricket community, we were able to help these devastated families getting back on the cricket field and providing a little bit of relief in an otherwise terrible time. This was one of the proudest moments for me as President of this great club.

Once again our Legends night was a fantastic event and I’d like to again thank Frank McDermott for all his tireless work with this event. I would also like to also acknowledge our great committee. It’s been another pleasurable year running the club with such a great bunch of people.

And lastly, thank you to all who supported our club this season. I am very proud to have been president of this club during another fantastic year and I look forward to seeing you all back for season 2014/15.

Yours in cricket, David Williams President, Springwood Cricket Club

JUNIOR PERPETUAL TROPHY WINNERS

JUNIOR CRICKETER OF THE YEAR: Daniel Smith

This season’s Junior cricketer of the year had a great season, leading his side from the front each week. Whether it was batting, bowling or fielding, Daniel performed with distinction. He scored 252 runs at an average of 50.4 and in the process scoring his maiden century (127no), took 4 at 23.8 with the ball and was responsible for taking 4 catches. His highlight of the year was making a fantastic 127no which included 23 boundaries.

MOST PROMISING JUNIOR CRICKETER: Kane Jackson

Kane had a great season in the U12’s, contributing heavily to ensure that his team had a successful season. His batting netted him 322 runs at an average of 80.5, including a highest score of 52. His safe hands held 5 catches and his bowling was the absolute standout as he took 18 wickets at 5.2, including 4 for 1 against Penrith R.S.L.

PAUSEY SHIELD: Hamish Rogers (Junior Clubman of the Year)

The Pausey Shield for Junior Clubman of the Year is not awarded for superb ability on the field, though Hamish did have a solid season both with bat and ball, scoring 206 runs @ 41.2 & taking 10 wickets. What caught the attention of everyone in the club was the way Hamish embodied the spirit of cricket that exists in our club. His sportsmanship was indicative of the way we all would like to play cricket, and see cricket played. His good performances on the field were no more important than the way he went about his ‘work’. Hamish also helped out with the Milo Have-a-Go program this season, as well as supporting the club at it’s annual Back to Springwood Day and supported the senior grades by playing games in 8th and 10h Grade and also helping out by playing Under 16’s when they needed him.

UNDER 9

Throughout the season, the Springwood U9s showed that they were very much capable of beating any team in the competition. We started off the season with a group of young boys and a girl who were all eager and wanting to learn about the game of cricket. We didn’t start off that well with our first couple of matches ending in defeat. That didn’t last long though! As the season progressed, the boys and Milly proved that they were definitely a force to be reckoned with some outstanding batting and bowling performances backed up in the field with some run outs that hit the stumps from side on, and also some screaming catches that I’m sure if caught on tape could’ve quite easily made it onto KFC’s classic catches. It was a great honour Coaching them. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will be looking forward to next season.

Thank you to all the parents for being such a great help in getting the kids to and from training and to the games as well. And most of all a BIG thankyou to Clive my manager for doing such a great job in getting emails and match details out to the parents.

Matthew Sullivan: Matt was one of our very skilled batsmen who was always looking to hit runs and score boundaries. Matt bowls very well too bringing in some real heat with the ball that was always getting the opposition batsmen jumping.

Joel Golder: Joel did exceptionally well this season with bat, ball and some very sharp fielding. With the willow, he was always aware and ready. If the bowler put the ball in his area, Joel sent it flying to the boundary. With the ball, Joel bowled some absolutely awesome overs and was always making the batsmen think about how he was going to get around this very skilful bowler.

Michael Dillen: Michael this season proved that he was easily one of the best with calling and running between the . Whilst batting, Michael was constantly alert for the quick single and when given the opportunity, he’d scream “YES” at the top of his lungs and take off. When bowling, Michael showed that everything was not about pace and with some very accurate line and length got himself a few wickets this season.

Jack Pohlmann: Jack was one of our most improved players in all the different aspects of the game. When batting, he ran very well between the wickets and was always ready to pounce on a bowlers bad ball. Whilst bowling, Jack was always trying to figure out the batsmen’s weakness and he bowled with pin point precision.

Millana Wylie: Milly this season showed that with the ball she was one of the best. Using her height she discovered how to swing the ball back into the batsmen often knocking many a middle stump out. Milly also did well with the bat this season hitting the ball along the ground well and being involved in some good partnerships. Milly also made a Penrith Rep team, so not a bad first year of cricket.

7

Jacob Wylie: Jacob was one of the most enthusiastic and keen boys at training and games. Jacob showed some promising signs with the bat this season by hitting the bad ball for four and doing some great running between the wickets. With the ball Jacob worked very hard on his accuracy and by the end of the season, he was hitting great lines and length with unbelievable accuracy on just about every ball.

Harry Farrell: Harry was our youngest player this season but showed that he was very capable of keeping up with the bigger boys. With the willow, Harry showed some excellent hand-eye coordination and hit just about every ball that came down the wicket at him. With the ball, Harry also showed some outstanding accuracy when bowling and managed to take a few wickets this season.

Kyren De Stoop: Kyren showed some excellent batting and bowling skills and always put in a lot of energy into whatever he was doing. Kyren showed with the bat the he could hit the bad ball away and did some excellent running between the wickets. With the ball, Kyren showed that he does have the potential to be a great bowler and throughout the season bowled some excellent overs.

Orion Pick: Throughout the season, Orion showed with both bat and ball that he had a lot of potential with some excellent technique with the bat as well as some excellent shots as well. With the ball, Orion bowled some awesome deliveries that left the batsmen clueless, often looking around and finding stumps on the ground. Well done to everyone, and thanks for a great season.

UNDER 10 - FILMER

I loved coaching U10 Filmer this season. The improvement across the season in this age group is fantastic. The first half of the season we spent finding our feet as a side but the second half was fantastic where we stretched every side and beat a number of them as well.

I look forward to seeing all these players back for next year.

Individually, the team played as follows:

Kade Camwell Kade’s year was nothing short of spectacular. He excelled with both bat and bowl and in the field – scoring over 100 runs, claiming 14 wickets and taking multiple catches and runouts. This was to add to his selection in the Rep U10 Development squad. This is only going to get better next year - Great Season Kade ....

Brady Hughes Brady’s first year of cricket was fantastic and a sign of things to come. Right from the start of the season, Brady showed an aptitude for all facets of the game, batting, bowling or fielding and his statistics over the year bear this out. Great Season Brady.

Max Jackson Although Max was playing a year higher than his age group, he certainly wasn’t out of his depth – far from it. Max has a fearlessness with the bat and real pace with the ball that will put him right up for Rep selection next year… Well done Max, great year.

Finn McDonald Another year for Finn and his cricket has really taken a massive leap forward….again What hasn’t changed is that Finn still does EVERYTHING with a smile on his face. Finn’ bowling has come on greatly since last year and his batting is now scoring him runs... Well done Finn!

Lachie Nicole Lachie bowling was strong all year and he has the knack of batting and getting not outs more often than not. He continues to have a real aptitude for this game and has had a great season ... Well done mate!

Daniel Skinner Dan is our happy go lucky cricketer with always a smile on his face. My highlight this year was Dan bowling the second best batsmen in the competition and setting us up for our best win of the year. Well Done Dan!

Will Sherwood Will was one of our standout performers this year in all facets of the game. His batting continues to improve innings after innings and his bowling is some of the quickest in the competition. To top of this year, Will was selected for the Penrith U10 Reps. I’m excited about what Will can do next season... a top season Will, well done!

9

Sam Turner Our Sam … What a player. Sam continues to play a year out of his age group and we’ve seen another year of improvement. As a left handed bat, Sam technique continues to get better – getting his front foot out to the ball and this year smacked his first boundary. His bowling improved out of sight over the year as well. Well done Sam…

Ben Waas Bens first season and he batting, bowled and wicket kept fantastically well. There’s great things around the corner for Ben. Ben’s innings a resultant straight drive for 4 to win one of our matches was a highlight for me as I know it was for Ben. I am looking forward to great things from Ben next year. Well done mate….

Eloise Williams Eloise truly shined this year taking her game to another level. Eloise loves everything about this game her batting and bowling continues to go from strength to strength. She also added wicketkeeping to her skills this year. To top this off, Eloise was selected for the Penrith U10’s Development Representative squad as well as the Moillie Dive U13 Girls Representative side and has been invited to trial for the U13’’s Girls State Development Squad. A Great Season from a great cricketer – Well done Eloise and good luck with the trials.

With any team, it’s impossible to do everything without the all important helpers who go above and beyond. Firstly, a gigantic thankyou to Jill Sherwood for all things managerial…. I really enjoyed running the side with you mate. Thanks to all the parents for your support including Simon Waas for the weekly BBQs, and the Hughes for my more than regular morning coffees. All this makes coaching this side a real treat.

Its been a pleasure coaching U10 Filmer this year and I’m really looking forward to next year.

Dave Williams Coach

10 UNDER 10 – THOMAS Well, what a first season of cricket for most of our team. On being introduced to our players at the first training session, it looked like it would be a very interesting time – with only 8 players registered at the time and many still having a lot to learn about cricket. But they were all brimming with enthusiasm and looking forward to hitting the field.

We started the season very slowly, with a fairly large gap in both the batting and bowling results – as well as a number of “crowd” run outs. But as the season progressed and the kids’ confidence grew as their levels of skill improved, we became much more competitive. We hit the pitch more consistently, we often batted out the full 30 overs, and we began to take catches and run outs.

Early in the season, we were disrupted by the devastating bush fires which destroyed the homes of two of our players. But it was great to see how the team and club got together to support the families who lost houses and also the donation of cricket gear from NSW Cricket was great for these kids.

It took until Round 15 to finally have a full team at a match – with a few matches in the season where we only had the bare minimum of 7 or 8 players. This allowed us to actually set proper fields and bat all the way down the order.

A great rivalry was developed with our opposing U/10 Springwood Team (U/10 Filmer) – which was fostered each week at our combined training sessions. Our kids lifted for our matches together and whilst they gave their all, it was played in great spirits. This rivalry continued when we played a Parent/Child match with the two Springwood teams at St Johns at the end of the season. This game was a great celebration for our kids and Springwood Thomas managed to finally defeat Springwood Filmer – with several kids getting their best figures of the season.

Individually, the kids all gave their best and all had highlights to speak of at the end of the season.

Jeremy Barker Jeremy joined the team after the first couple rounds. Despite being the youngest player in the team, he brought great enthusiasm and an effort to get better and better every time he played. After a slow start with his bowling, he began to land the ball with greater consistency and this spurred him on to keep giving his best effort. With the bat, he also grew in confidence as the year progressed, featuring with several retirements and not outs. His highlight has to be his magnificent catch behind shortly after taking over the gloves. Well done Jeremy on your first season of cricket. . Liam Golder Liam came into this season with great confidence and enthusiasm. In his first game, he was thrusted into the deep end, having to take the wicketkeeping gloves. He appeared to enjoy the experience and did a great job for his first time behind the stumps. With the bat, he always strode to the wicket with the calm of a seasoned cricketer. And whilst he did not always walk away with the score that he was aiming for, he always put his body on the line. But it was his bowling that certainly improved as the season progressed, impressing all with a more consistent line and length and constantly threatened to take wickets in our later games. Great stuff Liam.

Finlay Hahn Finlay’s first game of the season demonstrated the fact that he had played cricket before. He batted with great confidence and was always looking to score runs. He was always talkative in the field and looking for ways to spur the team on. He fielded well and his bowling was also very consistent, finishing equal second in the bowling aggregates (and was equal second in the batting

11 aggregates too). He improved his running between wickets as the season progressed. Thanks for being a real team player this year Finlay.

Eve Hurley Eve was a late comer to the season. She was playing Milo Cricket and decided that she wanted to come and give “proper cricket” a go. Eve always had a big smile on her face and her effervescent personality was a delight to see everytime she played. With each game she played, she grew in confidence in her abilities. Nothing seemed to faze her as she went about her batting, bowling and fielding. Her batting went from strength to strength and she finished the season with a couple or retirements which did her confidence in her batting a world of good. Keep up the great attitude Eve. Well done.

Isaac Hutchinson Isaac came into his first season of cricket with little experience except for Milo Cricket and bit of backyard cricket. But he was full of confidence and looked forward to each game with great anticipation. As he learned about the finer points of the game and took advice from the coaches each week at training, he improved in both his bowling and batting. He was equal second in wickets taken and bowled with greater consistency as the season progressed. It was his batting that took a positive turn late in the season, we he scored his top two scores, both being not out, in the second and third last rounds, playing shots that he had not shown earlier in the season. A great effort Isaac – well done!

Ella Laurent This was Ella’s first season of cricket. Ella proved to be a very quiet person on the field and it took her some time to show her inner personality. As she grew in confidence, her bowling and batting improved and she began to show a real competitive spirit. She batted extremely well in very difficult conditions against Colyton/St Clair, getting hit several times but refusing to give up her wicket for considerable time. She finished the season with a couple of retirements and was very unlucky not to take wickets in the last match. However, she bowled very well in our Parent/Child game, knocking over two of Springwood Filmer’s best batters. Great stuff Ella.

Connor LeBreton Connor also played his first season of cricket this year. Connor played each game with a great attitude and always tried to put into practice what he was learning at training. Throughout the season, he showed some great composure whilst batting and bowling, with each aspect improving as the season progressed. With a bowling action resembling the great Jeff Thompson, he started the season with some issues with line and length, but he became much more accurate and difficult for opposition batsmen to contend with. Well done on your first season Connor.

Eamon Luchetti Eamon proved to be an outstanding fielder this season, with unbelievable accuracy and throwing down the stumps – our version of Jonty Rhodes, the great South African fielder. Eamon was also lightning quick between the wickets and was always looking for the quick single. He also impressed with his efforts with both bat and ball and took some very good wickets. Eamon is also to be commended for his efforts at training, always giving his best and taking the advice of the coaches each week. Well done Eamon and thanks for beign a great team player.

Jack Mein Jack started of the season very quietly but proved to be a quiet achiever. He was always positive in his attitude and approach to the game and consistently gave his best effort at training as well in every game we played. He proved to be a consistent bowler, finishing third in wickets taken and he also batted well throughout the season. Well done on your efforts this season Jack.

12 Isaac Selwood Isaac was a coach’s dream this season. He was pretty much first at training each week, always listening and following instructions and putting into practice the advice given to him. He bowled consistently well, rarely bowling a no-ball or wide, and was the leading wicket taker for our team with 7 wickets. He also batted well and took great pride in protecting his wicket everytime he went out to bat. He finished equal second on the batting aggregates as well. He also fielded very well and took two great wickets behind the stumps in our first match against Springwood Filmer. A great season Isaac and I look forward to your efforts next season.

Kyuss Stewart From the first ball Kyuss bowled in the nets, he showed he was a natural. What was surprising was that he had never played club cricket or even Milo Cricket before. Throughout the season, he bowled with great consistency and was very unlucky to finish with more wickets than he did – he finished equal second with two others with 6 wickets. He also batted extremely well, with the highest aggregate for the team – the only player to score more than 100 runs for the season. He also demonstrated great leadership in the field, not only taking some great catches and run outs, but always backing up in the field and encouraging his team mates. A deserved MVP for our team. Well done Kyuss and I look forward to seeing you on the field next season.

Special Mention – Joel Golder On two occasions, Joel Golder from the U/9s played for us when we were short. Joel also came to most of our training sessions and always gave his best. He bowled well and also held on to his wicket. Thanks very much for filling for us Joel and well done on your efforts.

I would like to thank all the wonderful parents for their help throughout the season – at training and on game days. The team could not have functioned well without all your efforts. Special thanks especially to Phil, Chris, Nick, Dave, Daz, Tim and Brendan for throwing down balls, scoring, umpiring, making sure the kids were ready to bat etc – couldn’t have done it all without you. A special mention to Hutch who took control of looking after all of the paperwork and logistical needs along with keeping everyone informed including myself, mate you enabled me look after the reason we were all there, the kids. To all the kids I hope you enjoyed the season, I know that I did and I hope to see you all back next season.

UNDER 11

Congratulations to the under 11s on a fantastic season of cricket. This team has been steadily improving each season since the under 9s and this year improved markedly in all aspects of the game. This team is coached well by Brendan Bayliss and are encouraged to play with their own style, with the aim of continual improvement as the goal.

A quick summary of each player is below :

Sam Hall A new player to Springwood and brought a unique leg spinning style into the team which was near impossible to score off.

Ethan Powell Highlight for the season was batting through for 35* v Penrith RSL which was a top innings. A perfect example of how each boy has improved in the past 3 seasons.

Liam Bayliss Liam was great behind the stumps this year and picked up some pace with his bowling. One of the most consistent bowlers in the team and batting highlight of 38* v St Mary's RSL. Also involved in 10 dismissals behind the stumps.

Keenan Crisp Another new player to Springwood, Keenan proved to be a strong bowler and also possessing a strong arm in the field. He liked to give himself room and hit big through the offside.

Liam Wright-Terry Liam was a standout for us this season again, being our best bowler taking 16 wickets @6.97. Liam also took 9 catches and made 4 runouts. In addition, he often had to sacrifice himself for the team when we were in search of quick runs. A great team player.

Owen Powell Owen had a huge season, being 3rd on the run scorers list, and acting as our 3rd keeper. Owen really made massive strides in his game this year scoring close to 100 runs for the season after only batting 7 times due to absences and injury. We are looking forward to see what he can do next season.

Leo Cox In a team that has improved so much individually, Leo really did lead the way. He averaged 31 with the bat after last year averaging 4. Leo kept wickets, taking 11 dismissals, and he showed leadership with the bat, helping to guide the team home on a couple of occasions.

Campbell Rogers Campbell has a natural confidence that says nothing fazes him. He had a top season with the ball, taking 10 wickets at 13 apiece, and his batting was reliable and strong. Always enjoys his cricket.

14

William Turner Bill developed well this year with both bat and ball. His bowling really improved in the second half of the season after working with Brendan on his run-up. Bills batting was also strong during the year, having a couple of really nice knocks.

Matt 'Freddie' Ward Matt was on a hat-trick in Rd. 11 v Penrith RSL. After the 2nd wicket he stuck out the chest, hands in the air, Freddie Flintoff style, the boys loved it. Matt proved to be an important team player which the rest of the team identified and appreciated. Highlight with the bat was v Glenmore Park in Rd. 14, helping us get our first win against that team in two seasons.

Dean Twomey Deano was in his first year of cricket and had a really good season. His bowling really developed throughout the season, picking up his pace and accuracy, but Deans fielding was a standout with a strong arm and good anticipation, taking 2 catches and making 3 run outs. Can't wait to see him keep improving further next season.

Max Becker Max had another top season, leading our batting with 240 runs @ 48. He provides a calmness at the crease and provides leadership to the team with his work in the field, catching, and strong bowling. His highlight for me was in Rd.6 v St. Clair scoring 36* when the team were in a bit of trouble, helping us post a decent total.

Ryan Hanrahan Ryan was another who showed enormous improvement. This year he really demonstrated he can play long innings' playing good cricket shots. Ryan was again a consistent bowler, and was also one of the best catchers in the team.

All in all, the boys showed large improvement from last season and translated that with some very good wins. A big thanks to Brendan for giving up his time to coach the team during the week. I would like to see all the boys return so we can keep improving as a team into the u/12s next year. Thanks also to Adam Burton from the u/16s for being involved at various times during training as well.

UNDER 12

The Springwood U12’s can hold their heads high after another great season, where the teams performances on the field were only surpassed by their great camaraderie and sportsmanship both on the field and of it. These young men are a credit to themselves and their families, and are great ambassadors for our club.

Our results throughout the competition saw the team fall one win short of qualifying for the semi-finals, and with three nail-biting finishes to games during the season, it would be fair to say we were unlucky. The team continues to develop and I’m sure future seasons will see the team in the thick of the action at the end of the season.

There were many outstanding individual performances during the season, with every player contributing in one way or another to our successes. But the highlight for me was the support and encouragement shown toward each player by their team mates – these boys truly recognise what it means to be part of a great team.

Thank you to our team of parents, who are always there to support all of the boys, to grab the scorebook when necessary and to ease my stress after those close finishes. A particular thank you to Kylie Sparkes for her wonderful management of the team and to the club committee for maintaining the great traditions of the Springwood Club.

There is nothing more satisfying for a coach than to see all of the team return for the next season, so I hope your experiences this year bring you back for more in the years to come.

Ross Gawthorne Coach – Under 12’s

16 UNDER 13

Season 2013/14 was a good year for the boys. Although we finished outside of the semi finals, 3 new boys were introduced to the game of cricket, Caleb Grima, James Roberts and Brendan Hill. Ewan Rogers and Zack Farley spent a few games in higher age groups with the experience proving invaluable to them and we had 4 representative players in Ewan Rogers, Zack Farley, Noah Tracey and Ben Tracey.

Liam Bishell and Zack Farley opened the batting for us for most of the season and were outstanding as a pair. They showed good understanding and communication and both were our top run scorers for the season. Great season boys! Liam & Zack were also among our top wicket takers and were ably assisted by Blake Tester-Bailey who again proved that line and length will always win out in the end. Blake was always making the batsman play which will get you wickets more often than not.

Our pace attack was led by Ewan Rogers, Cameron Lever and Noah Tracey. All three bowled with good pace and also were there with quick runs with the bat when needed. Ewan hit an unofficial six in a swashbuckling innings against Colyton which will be remembered by all who watched. Noah nearly pulled the game out of the fire for us against Emu Plains with a quick 33 which included at least 3 fours in one over before being caught on the boundary with only a few runs required to win. Cameron showed yet again what a great pair of hands he has in the field and scared many batsman with his pace.

Our spinners consisted of Ben Tracey and Jeremy Hume. Both showed good control and got plenty of turn. Jezza backed it up with one of the catches of the season against Colyton. Ben also backed up his bowling with great enthusiasm in the field and scored some good runs in the second half of the season.

Braydon Currie was our full time keeper this season taking over form Jarrod Hackney who was having the season off and got better as the season went on. He also proved a handful for opposition bowlers at times with the bat particularly if they dropped anything short down leg. Jarrod came back for the last few games and hopefully will be back full time next season.

One of the big improvers was Sam Cornell. Sam played the house down this year with his accurate bowling at good pace and his dogged batting style. Sam always made sure that the opposition worked hard for his wicket. Keep up the improvement Sammy! The three new boys Caleb, Brendan and James were a fantastic acquisition this year and all brought something different to the team. Caleb was without a doubt the team entertainer and if he doesn’t make it as a cricketer, I look forward to seeing him on the comedy circuit in the years to come. Caleb was one of the big improvers batting for close to 20 overs in our second last game when asked to open up and also now has a mortgage on the gully fielding position which he made his own.

James was always willing to listen and learn and this reflected in his cricket. James took a number of good wickets during the season with his bowling and fielding a standout. He was also ever enthusiastic in the field always encouraging his teammates.

17 Brendan also put in plenty of effort throughout the season with his bowling proving to be his best asset. Brendan bowled some great over during the season and shows the potential to be a good bowler.

Thankyou to all of the boys for another enjoyable season. Also a big thankyou to Danielle our manager for all of her help and organisation during the year. Thankyou to all of the parents for your support and assistance during the year also and for making and in particular for your work with the BBQ each week. Thank you to the Bishells and TJ for bringing the BBQ each week to the games.

Coach: Gregory Dutton Manager: Kevin Minney

And what a season it was. It had a bit of everything. Unexpected wins, unexpected losses, bushfires, rain, wind, the Ashes series……and some fantastic cricket and experiences in between. It was the year that many of our players had their first taste of grade cricket, helping out in 10th grade mostly but also some players getting the opportunity to field for some of the higher grades. And once again, the wonderful support from the dedicated parents has enabled the boys to enjoy their cricket this year.

With the rotation system operating between 14/15 Div. 1 & Div. 2 and the U/16’s teams, quite a few players were also afforded the opportunity to play up a grade or age division which gave them a taste of some quicker bowling and most likely a taste of what they will be up against in the 2014/2015 season.

On a personal note, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Kevin for his support in the manager role again this year. The fact is, we have worked as a team on most things, from training sessions to team selections and his work has been crucial to keeping players and their parents informed. And of course, a big thanks to Stuart for entering the team results in each week. I love reading the team stats, but I loathe entering the results into my- cricket.

I would also like to make a special mention of Hamish Rogers and Jack Crouch who after being elected Captain and Vice-Captain took on their roles with enthusiasm and became well respected leaders within the team. Well done boys, you did a fantastic job. As has become the custom…… I would like to leave the boys with a few words that I hope they can reflect on from the 2013-14 season. I have borrowed the word of a very famous coach, Wayne Bennett, who poses the question, “Are you a hen or a pig”?

“There is no better way to approach your sport than the attitude of giving your best, regardless of the scoreboard and circumstances, the cheers and jeers. Sometimes I think this type of player is in the minority, most players being happy to sit back and wait for someone else to make it happen. Always doing enough to keep their position but never enough to be the difference. I suppose the difference is that one is committed and the other is only involved. It reminds me of the Ham and the egg story; the hen is involved, but the Pig is committed”………”If you will never settle for anything less than your best, you will be amazed at what you can achieve in your life”

If you don’t get it….maybe you’re a HEN!!! Cheers. Greg

19 Player Profiles Hamish Rogers (Captain) The MVP award really says it all about this fine, young player. Just as was the case with Michael Clarke, the Captaincy role sat well with Hamish and all aspects of his game flourished throughout the season. With 206 runs for the season a highest score of 57 at just over 41.20 average, he was a valuable player with the bat. However, his medium pacers were perhaps more crucial in our overall results for the season. 10 wickets, 13 maidens with a best of 3/0 and an economy rate of 2.42 per over….the Glenn McGrath of SCC. Jack Crouch (Vice-Captain) The Prince of Tweak!! This fine leg spinner led the way against many of the better sides, frustrating and confusing the best of the opposition batsmen with his impeccable line and length and well-disguised wrong-un. His best, 4/23 with 11 wickets in total for the season. Jack was also a valuable batsman for the team this season, scoring 194 runs with an average of just under 39 runs per innings. He was also one of the most dedicated players at training, always trying to lead by example in every fielding drill – a true HAM. Ben Paul It was really a season of two halves for this fine leg spinner and aspiring opening batsman. After losing his confidence with the ball early on in the season, he returned to form with a ‘bang’, capturing 9 wickets in just a handful of games with a best of 4/23. But it was his batting that really impressed this season. Ben scored 202 runs, with a high score of 46 at an average of 29 per innings, which is a fine effort for someone who enjoys facing the quickest bowlers whilst batting a metre out of his crease. Ben also did a fine job behind the stumps as keeper. Matthew Walker (Walkie) Matt finished last season with a few unlucky innings and it had been noted that he was a better batsman than his stats seemed to indicate. This season was the coming of age of Matt as a batsman with a few excellent innings, including his best of 28 and an improved average of 14 runs per innings. Matt also chipped in with some useful wickets with his best being 1 wkt for 2 off 3 overs. Matt also had a good time in the field with some outstanding individual efforts to drag in 3 catches for the season. Nicholas McMaster Cricket is, if nothing else, a game that should be enjoyed at every opportunity. Nick is one young player who enjoys his cricket. Although not scoring a truckload of runs, it was inspiring to see Nick work hard on his batting skills every week in the nets throughout the season. But his real claim to fame was the faint, yet present, leg spin that Nick developed that saw him grab a handy 6 wickets for the year. His best……3 overs, 2 maidens 1/1!! Nick also managed a great catch at mid-on early in the season to dismiss a key batsman. William Brazier (Billy) All great teams have great team players’, and Billy is one of the best in the business. This young man is one of the most positive and enthusiastic players you could ever hope to meet, and his happy disposition filters through the team to encourage continued efforts from his team mates. Behind the stumps, he was outstanding. Never before has a man spent so much time on the ground to catch a ball in the air. But he loves it…..and that is what is important. And not many will forget his first wicket of the year, brilliant. Billy finished with 3 wickets for the year with his best 1 for 4 of 3 overs. Oscar Delehunt Oscar received the Most Improved Player award this year, not only for his tenacious approach to improving his batting but also due to his outstanding results with the ball. Oscar finished the season with a team best 12 wickets; his personal best 2/8. He really

20 was the quiet achiever for the year chipping in with a wicket or to every week. Oscar should also be congratulated on his efforts with the bat. He achieved a career highest score of 35 and contributed to some useful partnerships throughout the season. Henry Cox (Onions) “And why onions?”, I hear you ask….well, this underrated swing bowler has the ball on a string, just like that famous swing bowler from the mother country. With a dry sense of humour and a gift for encouraging his team, this developing keeper made a valuable contribution in all aspects of the game this season. He scored 61 runs with the bat, with a best of 27* snaffled 3 wickets and took 8 catches for the season. All this and he can play basketball as well!! Jason Rafferty (Gerry) Another quiet achiever in the team, Jason proved himself with both the bat and the ball this season. He accumulated 116 runs with a highest score of 38 at an average of 23 per game. Jason was also a skilled performer with the ball knocking over 11 of the opposing players at an economy rate of 2.82 R/O and a best of 3/9 off a fair few overs. When this guy gets his rhythm right he is an extremely difficult bowler to keep out. Oliver Dutton (Oli) Oli is another player who lives for his cricket. His highlight of the year…..a call up to 10th grade where he got the 2nd highest score and took a couple of catches……Perfect! Oli had a good year with the ball taking 6 wkts at 16 with a best of 2/6 off 3 overs. His development of the leg cutter also bamboozled a few of his team mates in the nets. With the bat, Oli only knows one way, which is to hit the ball hard and run hard. Although not featuring in the honours list this year with the bat he hung in for a few good partnerships with teammates. He chipped in with 4 excellent catches as well. Aaron Minney (Cooper/Coops) Can a person love cricket more than Aaron….I doubt it. Watching cricket, playing cricket this young guy enjoys it and enjoys the challenge of improvement. Although not really achieving many big scores with the bat, it was the WAY he went about scoring that really improved this year. His best for the year, a 73* with a total of 128 runs for the year at 18 runs per innings. Aaron also changed his bowling from leg spin to medium pace which helped him to work towards developing a nice bowling rhythm and saw him gain 4 wkts for the season. And catches…..4 this year, with some excellent quick reaction ones in close to the bat. Ryan Mulvaney Ryan is a talented athlete who has the ability to change the direction of any game at any time. His efforts with the ball were outstanding this season, taking 9 wkts with an economy rate of just 1.87 per over and a best of 3/ 7 off quite a few overs. Ryan is also a dynamic fielder who can catch anything – in close, behind the stumps, in the deep….wherever! His 5 catches and two run outs enabled him to achieve the fielders award for this year. Watch this space. His best is yet to come! Daniel Smith (Princess) Another fantastic year for this young athlete who demonstrated continued commitment to his ongoing development as a talented batsman and all round cricketer. It’s hard to believe that Dan has only been playing cricket for two seasons when you watch him take on the best bowlers in the competition. Not many 6’s are hit in under 14’s but Dan hit two towering sixes this season, along with 29 4’s. His total for the season, 252 runs averaging 50.4 runs per innings and a best of 127*. Dan had an unlucky year with the ball, but contributed with some economical bowling at just 2.2 runs per over. He is also a dynamic fielder with a safe set of hands (4 catches) and a massive throw.

Well what a season gone by! Many up’s and down’s through-out the season but to end it on the biggest high possible, was the best result a coach could ask for. The boys played out of their skin all season with sometimes only have 9 or 10 players for the game. A big thank you too all the boys from the ages below that filled in for us throughout the year, as we only had a squad of 10, there is too many names to mention. Thank you to Donna for being the manager all year and doing all the work behind the scene. To all parents that came each week and supported the kids throughout the year, bringing them to training, and saving the biggest cheers for the Grand Final. What happened in the Grand Final you ask? Well great question! It wasn’t your everyday final that’s for sure, it started with Emu Plains (minor premiers) batting first, and we bowled really well each session to limit them to a final score of 71. We went out very confident of chasing that score in our innings, with Jacob with some heavy hitting taking the attack to Emu, with a quick fire 19, and Nick scoring 24, but we unfortunately fell 4 runs short scoring 67. There was a lot of time left in the day, so i thought why not send them back in, so we did and what happened after this i have never seen in cricket and it was absolutely amazing. We saved our best bowling for this innings with Ben R- 4/1, Jayson- 2/1 and Jacob- 2/5, dismissing Emu for 10! Yes you read it right 10. With 15 runs to win, I sent out Nick and Jack to bring it home which they did comfortably with Jack hitting the winning runs in his first season and Springwood made 0/16 for a massive come behind victory. Well done to the boys for the win, and an even bigger thank you to Ewen Rogers and Zack Farley for playing for us in the final. As it was my first season, to start like that, it was an awesome feeling. Bring on next year! The Team:

Jacob (Captain): A solid season had by Jacob, being co-captain this year, he stepped up when needed and made a good knock in the semi final scoring 42* and leading us to a win, he scored 226 runs for the season and took 6 wickets. Also lend his hand at keeping as we didn’t have a full time wicket keeper and did a great job.

Ben C (Captain): Ben Crouch had a great season, also being co-captain; he made some good decisions on the field and aided Jacob whenever needed. He took 10 wickets, (with the big wicket of the best batter for Emu in the GF) and made 82 runs.

Ben R: Ben Ross was new to the team this year, coming back an age group to his right age and immediately took control and bowled fast and his accuracy improved throughout the year, saving his best bowling for the GF. He took 16 wickets and made 42 runs.

Fionn: Fionn had a good start to the season making a 50 in the opening game, but struggled to continue making 50’s throughout the year with lots of starts but not carrying on, but a very fine season nevertheless. He was very reliable in the field and gave 100%. He made 206 runs this year and took 3 wickets.

Jack: Well what a season Jack had, the numbers don’t reflect the impact he had on the team this year, a very big improver this year 4 46

James: James had a solid year with the bat, scoring 127 for the season. He took the wicket keeping gloves for the Semi-Final and then Grand-Final doing an outstanding job, limiting any extra easy runs behind the stumps. He also took 6 wickets for the year.

22 Jayson: Jayson was the most consistent bowler all year, taking wickets at will and restricting the runs scored off him. He took 17 wickets for the year, and made 115 runs for the year, being very reliable down the order.

Nick: Nick was new to the club this year but fit in straight away, he took up the wicket keeping gloves this year to help out and even tried his hand at spin, he top the team with 237 runs this season and took a handy 9 wickets.

Pat: Pat had a great season, with a new career best score of 40 and his batting improved out of sight, getting better with each innings. He scored 86 runs and took 4 wickets, his bowling improved well during the year too.

Tristan: Tristan had a bit of an inconsistent year, missing a few games here and there but every game he played he gave 100%. He took 4 wickets this year with some tight bowling and was very unlucky with the bat only managing 3 runs this season.

The boys had a really good season this year making it to the Semi Finals, and then missing a chance to play in the Grand Final due to bad weather and a very wet out field.

A pretty good result considering that the team didn’t train often due to most of the boys having either work commitments and/or rep duties.

It was a real pleasure to coach these young men, and I wish the ones that have finished their Junior cricket all the best. I would also like to thank the boys who filled in from the younger age groups cause without them we wouldn’t have ever fielded a team.

Cameron Terry playing his last year of junior cricket had a good season both with the bat and ball. He also filled in as skipper when Matt Hunt was away on holidays. Cameron has played for the club for ten years, and played Reps from under 10s to 16s.

Matt Hunt also played his last year of Juniors and he was the team’s Skipper. Matt’s highlight of the year was taking a five wicket haul against Cranebrook. Matt has also played for the club for many years and has played Reps for Penrith for a few years now.

Harrison New was also playing his last year of Juniors. His form was solid all year in all aspects of the game. Harry has played many years with the club and also Rep cricket with Penrith. I’ve watched Harry develop into a good cricketer over the past season.

Reuben Chowdhury playing his first season for the club had a really good year and was unlucky not to score a century due to having to leave early to play grade for Penrith. Reuben is a solid cricketer in all aspects of the game and a pleasure to coach. Reuben played Grade and Reps this season.

Matt Ryall was another player playing his first year for the club. He had a really good season scoring a century against Emu Plains. Matt is also a good spin bowler and a solid fielder.

Andrew Ward is the comedian of the side whom always had a comeback in any situation. Andrew was one of the boys who loved just being part of the team. I saw his improvement as the season went on.

Hayden Robson was another boy who just loved playing the game with his mates. Hayden had a solid season all round. He had a wager with Wardy to see who could score the most runs and take the most wickets. I think it was a draw, but both boys will tell you different

Dan Howie also was playing his last year of Juniors. The improvement in his game this season was a sight to see. He had more patience when batting and kept improving his bowling when handed the ball.

Connor New too was playing his last year of Juniors, and he also had a good season. Connor scored some handy runs when needed and bowled well when needed. Connor played Reps and Grade for Penrith also this season.

24

Jeremy Newton is a handy wicket keeper and did well when handed the gloves. He also batted and bowled well when needed. Jeremy too played Grade and Reps this year.

Ryan Hackney was always solid in the opening position when he played. When he was asked to up the scoring he did, but never threw his wicket away.

Adam Burton was a pleasure to coach. He always listened to advice. Adam had a great season all round. He set a solid foundation every time he batted, and bowled well when given the ball. He was also very solid with or without the keeper’s gloves when he was fielding. Adam was yet another Rep player for Penrith.

Finally I would also like to thank Scott Burton for being the Manager for the first part of the season and taking care of the scoring. This meant I could concentrate on coaching the boys.
