4 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Springwood Cricket Club has had another great year on and off the field and I continue to be proud of both our achievements and probably more importantly of the way we play the game and the values we drive as a club. This approach to our game starts from our Milo In2 program and our Under 8’s and goes right through to our seniors. In addition, as with all years, there is much that also goes on behind the scenes by many people to enable our cricketers to get onto the park each week and I’m very grateful for these ever passionate volunteers for their time and energies.

One of our main driving values at the Club is 'Increasing Participation in Cricket' and to this extent, Springwood Cricket Club continues to be a strong contributor to our local area. This season was one of the wettest seasons I can remember but despite this, when the rain let us play, there were many strong performances. Congratulations to all our players who competed this year and to our premiership winning 1st and 3 rd grade sides. Also, a big thank you to all our volunteers including the Junior coaches and managers and the Senior Captains (and managers). The fact that these individuals step forward and take on these roles means a better season for us all - so thank you.

This year saw the third Legends Dinner. Ironically, the aforementioned inclement weather resulted in our annual ‘Back to Springwood’ Day – which usually follows the Legends Dinner -never actually getting underway this season. Despite this, the Legends night was yet again a fantastic success with great speeches by former NRL head referee, Greg McCallum and Australian representative Blind Cricketer, Ben Phillips. The highlight of the night was the recognition of our newest (and youngest) Life Member, Adam Thomas, a true current stalwart of our Club.

I would like to also acknowledge our committee. It’s been another pleasurable year running the club with such a great bunch of people.

And lastly, thank you to all who supported our club this season. I am very proud to have been president of this club during another fantastic year and I look forward to seeing you all (and potentially playing with a number of you) in season 2012/13.

Yours in cricket,

David Williams

President, Springwood Cricket Club

5 PERPETUAL TROPHY WINNERS

SENIOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR Harley Stibbard

The Senior Player of the Year is awarded to the player deemed to have achieved the most outstanding and consistent on field results during the season. Over the history of the award there have been some great cricketers to win the award. This year is no different with Harley Stibbard scoring a mountain of runs and taking & catches. Harley’s season was very strong, playing in 2 nd & 3 rd grade, but was the rock in third grade. Harley topped both the batting & bowling statistics in 3 rd grade, scoring 305 runs & taking 28 wickets. His fielding was also a highlight holding onto 9 catches. His highlight was taking 6/20 off 9 overs in the Grand Final, whichset up the win for his side.

6 THE RON ADAMSON TROPHY Jono Lees (Senior Clubman of the Year)

Life member Ron Adamson was president of Springwood Cricket Club for more than 25 years, and passed away in 2004. This perpetual trophy is awarded in recognition to the hard work and dedication Ron gave to this club during his time at Springwood. This year’s winner embodies that same hard work & dedication. Jono Lees was promoted to 1 st grade this season after he has spent numerous seasons scoring runs toiling away in the lower grades. It is Jono’s dedication & selflessness that has seen him become this year’s Senior Clubman. His eagerness to spend time with some of the younger members in the club reaped rewards with these players scoring runs & taking catches from the knowledge he shared with them during the season. Not only has Jono scored runs this season, it was his willingness to put the club 1 st by playing across 3 grades.Jono also served on the committee and helped out with the in2cricket program on Friday afternoons, which just proves Jono’s worth to the club & why he is a most worthy recipient of the Senior clubman award.

THE WALLY PHILLIPS MEMORIAL SHIELD Rydall Govender (Man of the match Back to Springwood Day)

Joe Hill with a majestic 81, Adam Thomas with a quickfire 42, Brad Filmer with a patient 26, Shaun Kitchener with a great opening spell of 1-11 off 5 overs might have been in with a shot of the Wally Phillips Memorial Shield were it not for Rydall Govender’s brilliant allround performance that pushed Springwood to victory. Rydall batted with his usual power & eagerness to clear the fences, which resulted in him posting a quickfire 19 which included 1 massive six, which did manage to clear the “Tall” fence at Lomatia. With the ball he took 5-9 off 4 overs to wrap the game up. His full length bowling was pivitol in his 5 wickets, 4 of them bowled and 1 LBW.. Sam Pointon chipped in with 2 wickets (one being the key scalp of Glen Carter) whilst Scott Filmer, Ben Scicluna & Shaun Kitchener all chipped in with wickets to keep Panthers to 168 & take it’s record on Back to Springwood Day to eight wins and no losses.

CAPTAINS REPORTS

1st GRADE

It’s that time of year again to reflect on the season that was. This season saw Springwood make the final and due to finishing minor premiers we won the competition due to the weather..

This season was a very successful year making up for failing at the final hurdle last year. Overall we used 14 players all season is one of the reasons why we were so successful.

With the bat Joe Hill lead the way again with 388 runs @ 48.50 with a sparkling 153 not out in the first game of the year which included 18 fours & 9 sixes.

He was supported strongly by Rydall Govender who scored 265 with a brilliant 67 in the semi-final, Paul Petterson scored 218 @ 36.88 & Michael Ross with 188 @ 26.86.

The bowling department was lead by Shaun Kitchener who bagged 27 wickets @ 15.19. His partners in crime were Scott Filmer with 19 @ 14.47, Paul Petterson took 16 @ 9.25 & both Nathan Mcdermott & Michael Ross taking 10 wickets each.

In the field Jono Lees was absolutely outstanding taking 8 catches & saving many runs. Adam Thomas, Michael Pointon & Brad Filmer had sold season contributing with both bat & ball and in the field. Sam Pointon came back to the club late in season and performed very strongly in the semi final.

A big thankyou to Grant Hunt, Nathan Hunt, Matt Rogers, Jacob New, Luke O’ Carrigan, Adam Parsons & Matt Tabrett for helping us out during the season.

A special thankyou to Grant & Nathan Hunt for helping with the covers for the first game of the season where we managed to get a result which probably helped us get the minor premiership & eventually the premiership.

A thankyou to Peter Filmer for scoring throughout the year and to everyone who came a watched & helped out.

Our record at Back to Springwood day still stands at 8 wins & no losses, with the weather intervening this year, so there was no game played.

Lastly but by no means least congratulations to Graeme Lewis & the 3rd Grade team for winning their premierships, Well done boys.

Thanks for a great season & many a laugh, see you next year.

Brad Filmer

20 2nd GRADE

For our mighty Club’s 2 nd Grade, season 2011/2012 was again a season of success albeit not the same level as the season prior. The success I speak of is again reaching the Semi Finals for the fourth season straight, and again being competitive in a reasonably strong competition.

Back to back premierships were always going to be a tall order, and we all take our hat off to Lewy and his 3 rd Grade crew for achieving this monumental feat. Another big congratulations goes out to Darb’s and our 1 st Grade crew for achieving their well deserved glory last season too.

Sticking to the trend of the two prior seasons, last season saw 2 nd Grade suffer from having a different team on the park each week which eventuated in our season consisting of a squad of 30 players. Excellent service was provided to us from both 1 st and 3 rd grade, and some talented Juniors backing up for us to put 11 on the park each week. Despite this, we managed to string together enough wins to finish fourth on the ladder at the end of the regular rounds.

With Macca getting his deserved promotion to 1 st Grade, we lost our spinner. It was with delight that I watched my old mate Dave Williams (aka Obama) have a go sending through some good off spinning darts. Obama bowled 28 overs and captured 8 wickets in the process, and let me tell you nobody celebrates getting a like Dave ☺. Again this season, he lead the team into bat, and as always batted with intent scoring 129 runs at an average of 21.5 including the one fifty. In the field, Obama provided us all with plenty of enjoyment watching him chase the ball like a teenager, cutting down lots of potential quick singles, and holding 5 catches. With or without the keepers gloves, he certainly is a great fielder, a great sledger, and overall a fantastic bloke. Well done mate!

Benajmin Joliffe (aka Jolly) was Obama’s opening partner. Jolly took after the bowlers punishing anything wide or short. He scored 201 fast acquired runs at an average of 25 including two fifties. Jolly for two seasons had been telling me he could bowl, and this season he was given his chance. He sent down 5 overs for 40 runs. That’s the end of that story ☺. As always he was brilliant in the field taking a catch, and he covered lots of metres cutting off runs. Jolly is unmatched in the “annoy the batsman” department. Good stuff mate, see you again next season.

Nathan Hunt (we need to come up with a knick name) In Nathan’s maiden senior season with us, he shouldered the responsibility of opening the bowling. He sent down great lines with both cut and swing, often being too good for the top order batsmen. He claimed 15 wickets, which could have easily been 25 had all the dropped catches stuck, at an average of 13.4 from his 109 overs. A big effort from a 16 year old. Nathan can bat too and I’m pleased to say that he didn’t score more than his Dad for Grant’s sake ☺, scoring 55 runs at an average of 7.8. This is something I know Nathan will work hard on, and isn’t far from being a good middle order batsman. He also has safe hands holding 4 catches for other bowlers. A great season big fellar! I’m looking forward to watching you top it next year.

Mitchell Gawthorne was another debutant to 2 nd Grade last season bringing with him a spinning option, a handy lower order bat, and a youthful keen fielder with a great throwing arm. With the ball, Mitch claimed 3 wickets from 24 overs, and with the willow, he blasted a quick 22 runs at an average of 7.3. In the field he took a catch, and effected a run out. Well done mate.

Stephen Bingon (aka Binga) only played 4 games last season, and the problem was that when he did play he had a shoulder injury so we only got a mere 8 overs out of him from which he took 3 wickets. Hence, we really missed his wiley swing bowling. With the willow he only managed a hand full of runs, and in the field he was always full of encouragement. Binga is a true team player and a great bloke to have around. I look forward to seeing you again next season mate.

21 Jon Maloney (aka Jono) was welcomed back to the squad with opened arms. As always has been the case, Jono is a handy top order batsman capable of big knocks when luck goes his way. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t around much and Jono scored 81 runs at an average of 11.6. On top of his batting potential, Jono is one of our best in the field with a rocket flat throw that no batsman dared take a run on. His hands are great too, seeing him hold 4 catches for the bowlers. Jono is a great talker and a definite team player whom I was delighted to have back. I’m sure he’ll be a run machine next season, and I’m looking forward to enjoying a few good partnerships with him. Great stuff Jono.

Dave Tabrett (whom also needs a knick name) enjoyed his second season with us last year. Dave is a quiet achiever but very quick and vocal when letting us know that he’s better, faster and stronger than his brother Matt. Carrying on from where he left off last season, Dave was brilliant in the field and like a cheetah across the ground chasing anything that was more than 5 meters either side of him. This athleticism saw many potential second runs saved. He can bat too! Dave scored 99 runs at an average of 19.8 and took 3 great catches. Good work mate.

Eclipsing last season’s effort, Peter Crouch (aka Crouchy) went about his bowling like a tradesman. Sending down his variable swing and persistent lines, Crouchy drew batsman into shots, and ultimately took their wicket. In just 4 games, Crouchy worked hard bowling 42 overs, and bagged himself 11 scalps at an average of 12.2 with an economy of 3.2. He was great in the field geeing up the boys and keeping the chatter up. Crouchy bowled brilliantly in the Semi Final taking 5 wickets for 46. All that success from a mere 4 games! Hopefully a few more games and many more overs next season mate. I’m looking forward to it.

A debutant to the Club this year was Peter Horan (Pete) . Pete brought the team a middle order batsman, a wicket keeping option, and a great partner to both Jolly and Grunta at annoying the opposition batsman. With the bat, Pete scored 53 runs at an average of 7.6, and when fielding he took 2 catches. On the one occasion he kept wickets, he affected a stumping with lightning gloves. Great stuff mate.

What a great talent is Harley Stibbard . Harley bowls with great lines, amazing in swing and variable speeds. This amazing action often sees him beat batsman of all calibers when he’s not taking their wickets. Harley took 12 wickets from his 27 overs including a 6 for 67 along the way. He is no slouch with the bat either. With fantastic technique, Harley grafted out 106 runs at an average of 26.5, and achieved a “fifty”. He also took 2 catches and worked well everywhere in the field. A great season Harley.

Nobody looks more natural at the crease than Daniel Bashford (aka Bashy) . With poise and grace, Bashy played shots all round the park scoring 126 runs at an average of 21. He’s not a bad spinner either bowling 11 overs for 1 wicket at a great economy of just under 2 runs an over. A talent we will exploit more next season. In the field Bashy too could talk a batsman out, and he held a catch. More of the same next year mate.

Another fantastic season was had by Luke O’Carrigan (aka Dukey) , particularly with the ball. Dukey captained the side when I was away and did a fantastic job. Leading from the front, Luke bowled 97 overs taking 26 scalps at an average of 13.4 and an economy of 3.6 runs per over. Among this great bowling effort was a 7 for 77 and a 5 for 17. What an effort! With the willow, Luke achieved 131 runs at an average of 18.7, and held 2 catches in the field. A great effort Dukey.

My old mate Grant Hunt (aka Grunta) kept wicket with flair and great glove work again seeing him achieve 19 dismissals made up of 13 catches, 2 run outs and 4 stumpings. With the willow, he fortunately outscored Nathan scoring 95 valuable runs at an average of 11.9. He again had a pretty memorable season with a great highlight being playing a game with both his sons Nathan and Matt. Good onya mate. Let’s go around together again next season.

22 The last of the regulars was Matt Rogers (aka Rogo) . Again I thoroughly enjoyed another year leading this team into battle. With the willow, I’ve had much better times seeing me score a mere 45 runs at an average of 9. Due to the lack of bowlers, I ended up sending down 39 overs, taking 6 wickets at an average of 18.2, and a very reasonable economy of 2.8 runs an over. Not bad for an old bloke. I look forward to going around again next year with this great bunch of blokes. Other players that contributed to our efforts this year that we are all thankful to are:- Jamie Neale, Adam Thomas, Rydall Govender, Shaun Kitchener, Adam Parsons, Matt Tabrett, Matt Poynting, Hamish Lees, Matt Lewis, Douglas Rogers, Matt Hunt, Connor New, Jacob New, Daniel Sparkes, and Jayson Orton. Thanks Gents.

A truly great effort all round where good fun and morale was underwritten with success.

Cheers,

Rogo

23 3rd GRADE

Following promotion after winning the 4 th grade premiership last season the boys continued where they left off and had a great season winning 9 and only losing 2 games during the competition rounds. That left the team second in the competition which was to prove a vital factor in the finals.

The semi final saw a dominant performance against Glenmore Park with a vital toss won by skipper Adam Parsons and a well compiled 255 total which was always going to be hard work for the opposition. They never really threatened being all out 162 following some very good bowling and committed fielding from all the team. That win saw another final appearance, this time against 4 th placed Emu Plains who defeated arch enemies Colyton in their semi. The weather played an important part with day one washed out and little chance of play day 2. Somehow the umpires deemed the match fit to commence at 2.40 pm. The toss was again won by Adam and this time he decided to sent Emu Plains in to bat . Opener Harley Stibbard got a wicket in the first over but although Emu recovered they regularly lost wickets reaching 4-50 and then a collapse saw them all out for 65. Harley finishing with sensational figures of 6-20 and his opening partner Mark Jansen 3- 34. The bowlers were very well supported by some great fielding and memorable catches none better than Brendon Moroney’s third to finish the innings which had to be seen to be believed. In reply the Springwood openers reached 7 without loss before the rain returned and the game was abandoned leaving Springwood premiers for the second year running.

A great team effort from all the regular 16 players in the squad who all played their part in the premiership. The strength of the team was certainly its bowling and fielding and on those occasions where we didn’t score enough runs we were always a chance to defend the total we had. Harley Stibbard took 28 wickets , Mark Jansen 24, Hamish Lees 15, Scott Randall 14, Adam Parsons 10 and Chris Douglas 7. Brendan Moroney was the pick of a very good fielding team and Matt Lewis did a great job as wicketkeeper taking 8 catches and adding 2 stumpings. Batting honours again went to Harley Stibbard with 309 runs @ 33.89, Drew Richmond [email protected] and Adam Parsons [email protected] .

The full squad was Adam Parsons(c), Drew Richmond, Matt Poynting, Hamish Lees, Lachlan Simpson, Cameron Douglas, Chris Douglas, Mark Jansen, Alex Todd, Jesse Rolfe, Matt Lewis, Scott Randall, Brendon Moroney, Harley Stibbard, Peter Jenkins, Graeme Lewis.

Special thanks to the players outside the squad who filled in where required during the year especially Ed Cross for his efforts after a late call up for the semi final. Also to Michael Poynting for his support and assistance as our main supporter.

The premiership was celebrated well into the night at the Royal Hotel and again during the end of season weekend where the boys enjoyed the hospitality of the Knickerbocker Hotel at Bathurst.

The 2012 season saw some old and new faces thrown together from various places to form this season's 4th grade, these being; Andrew Berry, Dean Bradshaw, Rodney Mosmann and Paul Hameister (3rd grade), Gary Kime, Sam Tucker, Adam Blum and Dylan Krasny (5th grade), Mark & Sean McLoughlin (9th grade), Zachary Hameister (juniors) and new arrivals Brendan Hewitt, Aaron Toner and Alex Duncan. Mark and Sean were good enough to go and help out 8th grade quite early on in the season but despite their loss, we had guys like Grant Hunt, Paul Toner, Chay Jordan, Ed Cross, Connor New, James Lane, Nathan Hunt and Jono Lees to help us out at various stages throughout the season.

Round 1 saw a lucky Glenmore Park secure a draw against us thanks to a washed out 2nd week as we were preparing to chase down 305. Dylan snared himself 4 wickets and backed that up with a season best 7 for 34 in our round 2 loss against RSL (133) after we could only manage 73 with the bat. Round 3 was a bit of a nightmare as Cranebrook rolled us for 59 despite Chay top scoring with 29. 2 (Dec) for 199 was their response (both wickets to Sean) and we were again rolled for a low score (113) in what turned out to be our only outright loss for the season, Chay again amongst the runs with 27, however it was Aaron who showed his abilities with a classy 47.

Eventual premiers Jamisontown knocked up 187 in our round 4 one-dayer with skipper Hameister and Brendan the main wicket takers. Our 71 in reply wasn't even close with no batsman making the highlights sheet. Round 5 was just as forgettable as Emu compiled 221 despite Aaron and Dylan getting multiple wickets. Again, a reply of 80 was nowhere near enough. A rare home game in round 6 saw us restrict Glenbrook to only 115 off their 40 with Rodney and Dylan again getting wickets. Unfortunately we again failed with the bat, this time managing only 61. Round 7 was washed out, round 8 another thrashing, this time in our return match against Glenmore, who racked up 219 off 40 for the loss of only 4 wickets. Springwood had an improved 105 in reply, Alex Duncan's 34 a promise of things to come.

Then came the turning point in our season. Jamisontown had obviously looked at our batting statistics and our win/draw/loss (0/2/6) record coming into round 9 and declared to anyone who wanted to listen that they were, 'Going to knock us over for nothing, score a heap, knock us over again, win outright and secure the minor premiership before christmas'. Well Springwood were sent in and batted all day in atrocious conditions (50's to Paul Toner and Alex) and indeed into the 2nd day, where skipper Hameister was able to declare the innings closed at 8 for 158, at that stage easily our best effort with the bat. Alex and Rodney took multiple wickets, and we certainly made Jamisontown work hard for their win, getting the runs 7 down. Some less than ordinary decisions by those umpiring possibly cost us an unlikely win.

2012 was a fresh start and we found ourselves up against Cranebrook at Lomatia in round 10, who had totally destroyed us back in round 3. After 2 overs Springwood were 3 for 4 but Alex Duncan backed up his previous half century with a polished 79 not out, the season's highest score and indeed batted with Paul Toner (38) for the rest of the 40 overs bar the last ball. Cranebrook never got close to our 4 for 132, managing only 8 for 85 in reply thanks to smart bowling and fielding, and also multiple wickets to Rodney (4), Alex and Brendan. I've never seen 11 more happy and relieved cricketers, and also the large (relatively speaking) crowd that gathered helped celebrated our first win. If I said a tear or two was shed I'd be exaggerating, but it was close to that.

It's a rare thing that this captain can say that I went into the next match against Glenbrook/Blaxland at St.Johns knowing we would win this game. It's an even rarer thing that this captain can say he knocked up 50 but that's what happened in our score of 170, our best for the season. Sam Tucker blasted his way to 25 and Brendan also got his highest score for the season in this match. Again, intelligent bowling and fielding saw us win our 2nd consecutive game by a closer than desired 18 runs. Alex, Dylan and Hameister were the multiple wicket takers and this team suddenly found themselves semi-final contenders. I'd personally like to thank the spectators and my teammates for making this game so special.

25 We slipped back to our old ways in what turned out to be our last game of the season against Emu, being rolled for a season low 57. This match could easily be forgotten as never having happened, due to the fact it should have been washed out both days, but Springwood's good nature and generousity handed Emu the win. Brendan and Dylan were the only ones who could take something away from the game, as both snared multiple wickets. So 2 wins, 4 draws and 8 losses was our final tally for 2012.

Dylan Krasny was the backbone of our bowling attack, while Alex Duncan bowled with extreme heat all season and troubled quite a few batsmen. Sam Tucker, Brendan Hewitt, Rodney Mosmann, Paul Hameister, Dean Bradshaw, Aaron Toner and Zachary Hameister all had their moment in the sun. I firmly believe we have at our disposal one of the best bowling attacks in the competition.

Alex Duncan backed up his fine bowling display with most runs. His 79 at Lomatia was a match winning innings and along with Paul and Aaron Toner, should form the backbone of a competitive batting lineup in future seasons. We only averaged 98 with the bat as a unit where 150 to 160 should see us win most games and be more than competitive in 4th grade. The general belief amongst the side is we'd love another crack at it.

Three guys deserve special mention in the fielding department. Andrew Berry put his hand up to keep wicket for our side after we had tried 4 or 5 others. The result of this was nothing short of outstanding. This club stalwart had never before put on the gloves in his life but took to it like a duck to water and holds his own against any other keeper in this club. Adam Blum was easily our most enthusiastic man on the ground. He kept us alive and awake when things were going against us and his catch cry of 'It's not a library' will remain with us all for a long time I'm sure! Alex Duncan is just a pure sportsman and any catch that went within 20 metres of him was easily held every time.

Thanks to all who played 4th grade this season and especially to Gary Kime, Sam Tucker and Adam Blum, who did whatever was asked of them, no matter how far outside their comfort zone and without complaint. Thank you to those who filled in at short notice and to those who came along to watch this team in action, in particular Mike Poynting, our number one supporter, who came to most games despite Matt not being in the squad. Your unending support is much appreciated. Thank you also to the Springwood Cricket Club Committee who do so much hard work behind the scenes - we simply would not be playing cricket without you. Lastly I'd like to thank Adam Thomas and the Senior Captains who had a most difficult job this season, and mainly for allowing me to play with my son, easily the highlight of my season.

27 7th GRADE

The 7 th grade side were an addition to Springwood senior cricket ranks this year with 7 players still playing under 16 and the remainder of the team not having played senior cricket for the club previously. The team was made up primarily of the boys and their dads plus the Brazier family, with the youngest, John, having played his junior cricket in 2010/11 with the other boys.

The idea behind this team was to attempt to transition the boys into the senior ranks in an environment that was to some extent sheltered, and at the same time allow them to learn how to behave as men on the field along with the responsibilities of umpiring and scoring; the former resulting in a lot of lbw’s at the start of the season much to the captain’s aversion. Above all, we all wanted to have some fun. The desired outcome was to be that the boys would gladly return next season when junior cricket was over for them and take their place in the senior ranks in their own right. It can be said plainly that this outcome was achieved and many thanks go to the dads’ for their efforts in this regard.

Some statistical highlights of the year were:-

Batting: Half centuries to Aidan Williams (our highest score of 87no), Ed Cross, and Mike Heffernan, with the batting award going to Ed Cross with 317 runs. There were a number of very solid partnerships starting with Jace Cross and Ed Cross in the first game of the season putting on 126 for the opening wicket, Aidan Williams and Ben Kearns with 80, Aidan and Brad Conway with 71, Ed and Aidan with 53 and Mike Heffernan and Michael Conway with 43 for the 9 th wicket. Ed and Jace were able to put on 5 opening partnerships in excess of 30 runs for the 7 times they opened the innings together. And who could possibly forget the innings of Colin Williams against Penrith RSL when he faced the last 2 balls of the innings hitting the first ball for 4 over the top of square leg and following it with an enormous 6 on the last ball to the same location on the field. Another highlight was the courage of John Brazier to put his hand up to open the batting against the fiercest bowling attack in the competition. He had the bruises to prove it.

Bowling: The largest proportion of the bowling work was left to the juniors to give the dads a much needed rest. The bowling award went to Luke Lehman for his ever consistent line and length and an uncanny ability to pick up early wickets. Brad Conway and Ben Kearns weren’t far behind and John Brazier (aka Rusty) never let us down. Aidan Williams bowled leg spin for the first time and finished with 9 wickets – a great effort. All of these bowlers finished with best bowling figures of 4 wickets and if it wasn’t for a few dropped catches there would have been a few 5 wicket hauls. Ed Cross was lucky enough to jag figures of 6/46 on a day Mike was away and he was captain and refused to give the ball to anyone else. The remaining Brazier brothers were the finds of the year with Andrew showing very impressive pace and bounce and Paul taking 2 wickets the first time he bowled for the team and this was on a day when no-one was able to get a wicket. Chris Rea continued to improve and ended with an excellent economy rate as a result. Steve Rea sent down a couple of good overs of spin and the subsequent sledging from his son, Chris, was also a highlight.

Fielding: Our fielding was not our strong point but that’s not to say there wasn’t some great efforts. Brad Conway led the way with some great catching with 5 dismissals and wasn’t far ahead of his dad, Michael, with 4. There were even a few c Conway b Conway which was great to witness. Colin Williams showed us how to field in the gully with 4 catches closely followed by his son, Aidan, with 3. It appears that catching skills must be passed on from dads to sons!!!. 28 Jace Cross improved markedly as our wicket keeper, particularly down the leg side and also managed his first senior stumping. The improvement in Aaron Heffernan’s fielding and his overall contribution to the team also needs to be mentioned. Steve Rea also rates a mention with a number of sharp catches in slips.

Miscellaneous highlights include the differing brands of beer after the game and the responsible drinking shown by the dads (let’s hope this is not spoilt on presentation night). In particular, the “lucky” beers that were not so lucky gave us all a good laugh (I told you we should have drunk them before the game). It must also be said that there were a few interesting car trips home after the game when the dads were able to outscore the sons (and vice versa).

It was a great year and thanks go again to the dads, and particularly Mike Heffernan, for making this season possible. A thank you also to the New family with Connor New standing in on a few occasions when we were short and Clinton doing a bit of scoring for us.

It was a fairly ordinary year for us, finishing 2 nd last on the table. On a positive note, we did manage one outright win! It was a little hard trying to get consistency in the team with players in and out of the side all season. Our batting and bowling was just not up to scratch this year.

Batting Given we’d lost all but one of our top 5 batsmen from last year, we had to do a bit of re- shuffling, so Nathan Gegg and Alex Sheerman were elevated to the 2 and 3 slots. Alex really shone with the bat and despite only playing 9 games, made 205 runs at 20.5 and took out the batting award. Alex made individual scores of 64 in round 3 vs Glenmore Park Red, 55 in round 10 vs

Glenmore Park Red. Nathan Gegg also made the hall of fame with a solid 54 in round 3 vs Glenmore Park Red featuring in a partnership of 39 with Alex. The quiet achiever with the bat this year was Matthew Hunt. He featured in a couple of excellent partnerships of 74 and 26 with Alex. He show’s great promise with a fairly solid technique. Bowling Bowling was certainly a weak point this year but every so often the planets aligned and we turned in some better performances once the ball was pitched up and the bowlers focused on bowling to the field, rather than long hops. Danny Stibbard was the stand out bowler with best bowling figures of 6/30, taking out this year’s award. Lee (I’m always late) Jefferson bowled his heart out again recording best bowling of 5/32. It’s a real shame Stephen (not another collision) Ferretti only managed 3 games this year as he bowled very economically and really tied the batsmen up. Matthew Hunt bowled very well, and often without luck but has all the bragging rights over his big brother after snapping a batsman’s middle stump in two with a blistering delivery! His dad told him to slow down after that as the club couldn’t afford a new stump every game! An honourable mention to Gary Kime, who in filling in for us, took 5/42 vs Henry Lawson.

Fielding This year Sean McLoughlin takes out the fielding award. Although Alex took more catches it was also over more games and the two he dropped in the first over of the last match, cost him dearly ☺ It’s fair to say, we have quite a bit of room for improvement in this area with last year’s winner Eddie (the panther) Jansen, grassing more than he caught…not that I can talk!
