PRESIDENTS REPORT

Season 2013/14 has come and gone and we are on the eve of season 2014/15.Last season the Association had 75 sides from 16 clubs, which keeps our numbers above 70 teams for the past few seasons.

Congratulations to all the Premiers & Runners Up and to the individual trophy winners.

Thank you to our Secretary Michael Mooney for all his assistance throughout the season. It’s a hard job and Michael did an exemplary job.

A big thank you to Allan Lofthouse who kept the Association results. Some captains need to ensure their results are entered correctly and on time to make Allan’s job easier, but he did a sterling job with that hindrance.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank David Dee who is standing down after More than 50 years involvement in cricket in the Shire both as a player & an administrator. David has made a huge contribution to cricket in the Shire and without his hard work cricket would not be where it is today, I have valued his advice & guidance over the time I have been involved with the Association & I personally will miss his presence.

Thanks to Lance Taylor for making the Association is financially secure and thanks to our Vice Presidents Dean Martin and Adrian Steffani for their help & guidance throughout the year and to all the others members of the Executive my sincere thanks for all your efforts over the past season.

My thanks to the Junior Association and the Grade club for their continued support. I must express my thanks to Jim Lynch President of the umpires Association and Lance Taylor the umpires delegate for their co-operation and support during the season.

This season we entered a Durham Shield team only for the representative season and they performed very well making the final against Hornsby well done boys, it would be good if we could add a Martin & Telegraph Shield teams next season.

Last but not least my thanks to Sutherland Shire Council for their assistance with the grounds during the season, especially the parks & playground officers Kirin Lindop, Daniel Ristic & Emi Skopal.

In conclusion, I hope you enjoy the off season and I hope to see you all back for season 2014/15

Noel Taplin President

SECRETARYS REPORT

Having had the opportunity to read the reports of Noel Taplin and Allan Lofthouse There is nothing I would add regarding the season just completed.

Thank you to the work put in by all committee members to ensure that the SSCA competitions are run smoothly for the benefit of all players. Your commitment and contributions are very much appreciated.

Once again there were some minor disruptions while Council carried out necessary ground improvements as part of the ongoing 5 year plan in conjunction with the SSJCA and Sutherland Council. There will be major upgrades this season at Kareela and Seymour Shaw which will further improve the quality of grounds we have available.

My thanks to David Dee for his sage advice and friendship over my time with the Association. Unfortunately David’s health is not the best at the moment and he feels that he would not be able to contribute by standing again for the Association committee. David has provided well over 50 years’ service to the Association as a player, representative player and administrator. On more than one occasion he has been the calm voice of reason. His many years as Secretary, Recorder and committee positions gave him a unique understanding for the successful running of this Association. I wish him and Carol all the best for the future and I know that I will be able to consult with him when needed in years to come.

Thank you to our major sponsor Kookaburra, to Sutherland Council for their on-going support of cricket in the Shire. Special thanks to Tom Croucher for assistance with Cricket On-Line and liaison with Council.

Congratulations to all premiership winning teams and individual award winners for the season

We sadly record the passing of two stalwarts of Sutherland Shire cricket in Vince Ridge and Barry Davison. A farewell message is printed elsewhere in this report.

SSCA RECORDER AND COMPETITION MANAGER’S REPORT

The 2013/14 cricket season, being a unique “Double Ashes Season,” saw the number of SSCA teams increase from last season’s low of only 68 teams to an improved 75 teams in 10 grades of 7 teams & with the B4 grade being a 5 team competition. Overall there was an increase of 167 registrations that saw player numbers rise up to a total 1,414 registrations for the season. There was a marked increase in the numbers of late registrations recorded after the official SSCA Registration/Team Nomination date on 12 August, 2013. Admittedly there were a couple of clubs that had nominations entered after this registration date because they were not sure of their official numbers at the time, but this also saw a blowout in the total numbers of these late registrations. There were a total of 416 late registrations recorded after 12 August (41% of the original numbers registering) with around 190 of these registered after the commencement of the SSCA Competitions (13% of total registrations). Owing to the very large increase of the late registrations, & the extra work involved in monitoring & recording them, the committee hopes that all clubs can have the bulk of their players registered much earlier next season & preferably before the nominations go in. This will enable better grading assessments to be made by the committee.

At the conclusion of the season proper, 11 of the 16 affiliated Clubs qualifying for & being represented by their teams in the Semi-Finals/Finals games to be played in early March. Congratulations to those teams in achieving these results. Minor Premiers’ & Finals’ winners plus the names of all of the SSCA & Grades’ Awards’ winners are published in this Annual Report. The Semi-Finals’ results may be accessed in the Cricket Online Match Results.

In the Finals’ games 4 Minor Premiers were successful, five 2nd placed teams & two 3rd placed teams also achieving the ultimate Premiership victory in their respective grades.

Throughout the 14 rounds of competition it was disappointing that 8 games were forfeited by teams, 22 duty failures & also a very disturbing incidence of (around) 115 late entries of online results by various teams across the board, some on more than 5 occasions. Once again the recording of the Duty Umpires in the Online Results left a lot to be desired & the Online Points Scores could not be maintained accurately on a weekly basis. It is hoped that next season the clubs can get behind the SSCA Committee in seeing that these problems are properly corrected so as to ensure a smoother running of your competitions & a more accurate assessment of the competition points throughout the season. To those Clubs, Captains & Scorers that ensured that their teams’ results were recorded on time & accurately. I thank you on behalf of the SSCA Committee.

After 14 rounds of competition there was a total of 83 centuries scored, Marcus Beattie having scored 3 for his Como-Jannali C1 team. There were also 10 players scoring 2 centuries each with 8 players scoring over 150 runs in an innings, the highest being DLS Seagulls A2 player Daniel Brett with 215no. Seven or more in an innings was achieved on no less than 15 occasions with 2 players having taken 8 wickets - Luke Watts 8/19 & Luke Annesley 8/22 being the successful bowlers. 13 Hat-tricks were also achieved throughout the season with EDCC A1 player Paul Bremner bagging 2 of those.

I would personally like to thank all of the SSCA Management Committee, Tom Croucher (Cricket Online Administrator), SSCUA Umpires Committee & their members, the various Clubs’ Committees, the Team Captains/Scorers & their players plus all those people from the Sutherland Shire Council that are responsible for the grounds that the teams get to play on each season for making this past 2013/14 season a most successful & enjoyable one. Whilst there have been a number of problems throughout the season those mentioned above have helped out to make my job that much easier & once again I thank them.

NOTES FROM THE CLUBS

BANGOR BARDEN RIDGE CRICKET CLUB

Bangor Barden Ridge Cricket Club re-entered the SSCA competition this year with a goal to recreate that pathway for our juniors to continue with the club beyond the junior competition.

This year saw our 16B’s from the previous year enter the seniors comp and make the finals in their first year. We also had 3 other teams return to the club to give us 4 teams in all.

That was beyond expectations. And it was made even better when the B6’s took out their competition. Great work guys.

I would like to thank Peter Shepherd for coming back to the committee and agreeing to run the seniors. Thanks Pete.

We would also like to thank the SSCA for assisting with our transition back into the competition.

Looking forward to next season.

Regards

Brett Bryant President Bangor Barden Ridge Cricket Club

DLS SEAGULLS CRICKET CLUB

We only had two men’s teams this year. Whilst disappointing to lose the players from the previous year the two teams we had performed exceptionally well in the higher grades that they were allocated. The A2 team led by Anthony Malouf won the A2 competition which is the highest grade the club has achieved since amalgamation and also for the old Cronulla Seagulls CC.

You will have noticed that the nets at Woolooware Oval have been upgraded. This has been partially funded by a grant from the NSW government (Communities NSW and Sport and Recreation) in the amount of $20,000. The balance has been covered by Sutherland Council.

We were fortunate to have received a grant from Tradies (Gymea and Caringbah) for $4,500 to assist with the Junior Cricket Academy for 2014. The Academy will be conducted this year by two Level 3 accredited Cricket Australia coaches with assistance from other accredited coaches.

There have been many changes to the website (www.dlsseagulls.com.au) and we thank ASWIG solutions for their contribution in constructing and implementing the new format as well as ongoing maintenance of the site. I would encourage you all to use the website for information sharing as well as the Facebook page we have.

Congratulations to Daniel Brett on being our men’s cricketer of the year. Whilst slightly down on last year’s fantastic stats he still had a great year and was a major contributor to the winning A2 team.

A couple of notable individual performances - Daniel Brett set a new men’s club record of 215 not out and Anthony Malouf has once again raised the wicket-keeping standard to 33 dismissals in a year.

Sadly we lost one of our club’s founding members and first club coach Barry Davison during the season.

Thank you to the following:-

 The DLS Seagulls committee – Grant Arnold, Gary Medway, Adam Bird and Clint Gavin.  All our sponsors – GIO Workers Compensation, PAM Chartered Accountants, Recovery Partners, Warren Saunders Insurance, PAM Financial Advisors, ASWIG Solutions, Tradies Clubs Gymea & Caringbah, Kingsgrove Sports Centre, Shire Foods and our most recent sponsor SGI Architectural.  To the men’s captains Anthony Malouf and Andrew Whittingham and managers for the smooth running your teams and once again not incurring the wrath of the SSCA  To all players for their efforts throughout the season. For the spirit and tenacity exhibited by DLS Seagulls teams when they play their games.  To the committee of the SSCA for once again conducting the competitions we enjoy.

Michael Mooney PRESIDENT

ST PATRICK’S CRICKET CLUB

Nice to see the Club with 8 Senior teams this year, 2 teams up on the previous year. It was also good to see the number of new players sprinkled through the teams. We had a fairly successful season with 3 teams making the final series; unfortunately our 2 new teams (C1's & C2's) were knocked out in the semis but our A1 team won their second Premiership in a row.

There were many outstanding performances from within the club, 3 centuries by Joseph Simpson A1's, Kailash Prabhu C1's & Peter Blayney C1's, an 8 wicket haul from Luke Annesley A1's, 7 wicket hauls from Simon Edmondson B3's & Joshua Hudson A1's. Joseph Simpson (418 runs) was leading run scorer for the Club with Matthew Parker (59.14) having the best average, Simon Edmondson the top bowler, taking both awards with 40 wickets at 8.08 runs ea.

With the completion of the new lighting at our Waratah Nets it would be very hard to argue that we haven't got the best Cricket training facility in the Shire, 5 nets, good synthetic, long run ups & the new lights that can allow you to bat with the "Red Ball" at any time of the evening.

Finally thank you to the SSCA committee for the smooth running of the competition again this season, without your hard work the season would not run so smoothly.

Warren Daley, Men's Secretary St Patrick's Sutherland Cricket Club

VALÉ VINCE RIDGE 6/3/1932 – 9/8/2013

Vince was an outstanding cricket player and administrator.

His achievements are legendary and some were:-  40 years with Sylvania Heights CC – 20 years as captain of one of their teams and helping them win many Premiership titles.  Prior to joining Sylvania Heights, played A grade with St Patrick’s winning numerous premierships with that Club.  Captained the successful touring NSW Junior Cricket Union team in 1951 against South Australia  Vince first joined the SSCA committee in 1958/59  Member of many SSCA Martin Shield teams in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Was the first player to score a Martin Shield century for Sutherland.  Most years made the honour list for his bowling achievements and over his career took well over 1,000 wickets  In 1964/65 won the A2 “all-rounder” award.  In 1971/72 (the silver jubilee of the SSCA) he was elected as a Life Member of the Association. That year he was Senior Vice President of the Association and his Sylvania Heights team won the A2 Premiership  He was Senior Vice President of the SSCA from 1971/72 until 1977/78  He was delegate for many years to the NSW Junior Cricket Union.  In 1978/79 he was elected President of the SSCA, a role he was to continue in for another 17 years until 1994/95  Received 50 year service to cricket medal from Cricket Australia.  Continued playing cricket in the Shire until he was nearly 70 years young (2001/02)  Was elected Patron of the SSCA in 2000/01 and continued in that role until his death in 2013.

In addition to his love for cricket, Vince was an ardent follower of most ball sports but football and baseball held a special attraction for him. He followed the St George football team since 1941.

From the eulogy given by his son Mark, Vince loved music, played the violin, enjoyed square dancing and loved ballroom dancing with Shirley. Vince was first and foremost a family man who enjoyed and supported all the activities of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was extremely proud of their sporting and other achievements.

Vince was a true gentleman, cared for people he came in contact with and always ready to offer the benefit of his vast experience in the commercial and sporting fields. He was a team player but his contribution to the success of the SSCA cannot be overstated.

To Shirley, Ann, Mark, Steven and Juliette and their families we extend our deepest sympathy and condolences on your loss. You have lost a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather – we have lost a friend and stalwart of our Association

May he rest in peace when he is not bowling to the Don

(Michael Mooney, Secretary & Life Member Sutherland Shire Cricket Association) VALÉ BARRY JOHN DAVISON 1948 – 2014

Barry’s contribution to cricket was enormous. There is insufficient space here to fully document his achievements however you will find a comprehensive list in Tom Iceton’s eulogy at the Sutherland Grade Cricket website.

Barry was a part of the group of people who started Cronulla Seagulls in 1978 (The first season being 1978/79). Barry was appointed the first club coach. Alan Mackenzie was the first Secretary and Craig Mackenzie was in the Under 10B team coached by Barry (along with his sons Rod & Greg).

At the time Barry was playing grade cricket with the Sutherland grade club and by the time he finished his playing career he had played 310 matches, scored 8,561 runs, taken 141 wickets and held 154 catches.

Barry was a physical education teacher with an unbelievable talent for communicating with people. He was an inspirational leader and coach. His ability to organise was second to none.

The personal coaching ideals espoused by Barry as club coach in 1979 are as relevant now as they were then and I believe that the Club which Barry helped found still adopts these ideals, being:-

(1) to provide ENJOYMENT for everyone involved (2) to create in everyone a greater interest in the sport while expanding each individuals knowledge of the game, and (3) to keep the game in PERSPECTIVE, by emphasising the MORALITY of the game to both parents and players

and most of all “A FAIR GO FOR ALL”

Barry’s creativity and innovative approach to junior cricket is best illustrated by the fact that his concepts of rotation cricket and average cricket had been introduced by the SSJCA in the 1980’s. Tabloid cricket was a precursor but not as practical. The SSJCA along with most junior associations in NSW have various forms of modified cricket based on those early concepts. Cricket Australia has adopted modified games of cricket for the juniors as part of their Junior Cricket Policy.

The same creativity and willingness to visualise and try new methods was evident when he coached individuals and teams. As a Level 3 Cricket coach (gained in 1973) Barry had the distinction of coaching the undefeated NSW Under 17 in the 1987/88 season, 1st grade teams in the Sydney grade competition, many successful AWGreen teams for Sutherland, club teams and individuals who have achieved the highest honours in Australian cricket.

To Sandra, Rod and Greg and their families and to Barry’s mother we extend our deepest sympathy and condolences.

Barry has gone home now, guided by his faith and by the light of those he has loved and lost. At last he is with them once more, leaving those of us who grieve his passing with the memories he gave. While his life ended too early he will live on in our hearts and in our memories and in the many significant contributions he made for cricket in the Sutherland Shire
