2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It is my pleasure to present this report as a reflection of the 2007/08 cricket season for our Club.

Well, it took the commencement of the cricket season to signal the beginning of the end for draught conditions across the state. The 2007/08 season was the most punctuated season for many years but, in the wider scheme of things, nobody really seemed to mind, if it took cricket to break the draught then all was not lost.

For the cricket that was played, Springwood Cricket Club had a very successful season culminating in a number of teams reaching the finals and winning both the Under 11 and Under 13 Division 1 premierships. Given that our Under 12 team came so close to premiership glory this augers very well for the long term prospects of our club. All of the other junior teams remained competitive throughout the season. We experienced a growth in numbers for our Senior grades with 5 teams competing in the Nepean competition for the first time in many years. Again our teams were very competitive and although only one senior team made the Semi Finals there were some outstanding individual performances. All in all, our stocks of playing talent from under 8 right through to, dare I say it, “ The ROYALS” is very good. Lets not also forget the highly successful “ Have – a – go “ programme which continues to attract large numbers but was also severely hampered by the weather . The challenge for our club is to improve our conversion of these players from this programme to the next level of cricket.

From an administration perspective your Committee was very pro active this year. A number of new processes were introduced. I wish to thank and congratulate the Committee on for their thorough professionalism for doing, what is at times, a thankless task. As I have stated many times over the years in my report new blood is required all of the time on any club committee and Springwood Cricket Club is no exception. Can I again encourage people to come along and join the Committee and help to administer this very successful Club which by the way is now approaching some 115 years off age, the second oldest cricket club in NSW.

On behalf of the Committee can I thank everyone involved in our Club for the 2007-08 season. My thanks to all of the junior coaches, managers and all of those wonderful parent supporters that make junior cricket possible. To the captains of the senior teams also thanks for a job well done. To the committee, your stewardship of this club has been outstanding having to deal with some very difficult issues and in doing so displaying a thoroughly professional approach without fear or favour!!

Personally, at the time of writing this report, I am unsure if I will be standing as President next season. A period of 10 years in the chair is a very long time and I feel that it may be time for a new person with fresh ideas to take the lead of this Committee. Whatever is my ultimate decision, please be assured that I am very proud to have presided over this great club and the wonderful people whom are Springwood Cricket.

3 JUNIOR PERPETUAL TROPHY WINNERS

JUNIOR CRICKETER OF THE YEAR: Mathew Newton

This season’s Junior cricketer of the year had a great season, leading his side to a berth in the semi final. Whether it was batting, bowling or keeping , Mathew performed with distinction. He scored 245 runs at an average of 27.22, took 11 wickets at 14.00 with the ball and was responsible for 6 dismissals behind the stumps. His highest score of the year was an entertaining 81 against St. Clair.

MOST PROMISING JUNIOR CRICKETER: James Newton

James had a tremendous season leading the U11-1s’ batting line-up with maturity beyond his years. His batting that netted him 581 runs at a staggering average of 116.20, including a highest score of 81 not out. His safe hands held 8 catches and he took 17 wickets at 5.06.

PAUSEY SHIELD: Hamish Lees (Junior Clubman of the Year)

The Pausey Shield for Junior Clubman of the Year is not awarded for superb ability on the field, though Hamish had that in spades: 167 runs at 20.88, 8 catches and 12 wickets at 11.58. What caught the attention of everyone in the club was the way Hamish embodied the spirit of cricket that exists in our club. His sportsmanship was indicative of the way we all would like to play cricket, and see cricket played. His good performances on the field were no more important than the way he went about his ‘work’, as his U14-1 side marched towards the semi finals. Hamish also helped out with the Milo Have-a-Go program this season As well as performing brilliantly in the juniors, Hamish also filled in for our senior teams (2nd, 4th and 7th grades) with little fuss and was more than up to the task of performing at that level.

4 MILO HAVE-A-GO CRICKET 2007-2008

Another year over and another successful season for our Milo Have-A-Go cricketers at Springwood Cricket Club. The numbers remained similar to last season with almost 75 registrations. It was fantastic to again see an increased number of girls taking up cricket. The aim of this program is to introduce young children to cricket, and teach them some basic skills. The program ran over 10 weeks, however due to constant ran, this went after the Christmas break and well into the new year. The program ran for children aged 4 to 8 years old to teach them skills of cricket, but at the same time find enjoyment from the game. Special thanks must go to Scott Filmer, Luke O’Carrigan, Cameron Bryant, Jono Lees, Hamish Lees, Matthew Poynting, Sam Tucker & Menake Rambukkana. All these boys play in differing teams for Springwood and were a magnificent help week in and week out in running this program smoothly.

This year Springwood was chosen to go down to the Sydney Test and play diamond cricket on the filed during the lunch break. Cricket NSW decided the 2nd day would be girls day, and 7 of our stars went down and showed off their skills. The girls had a great day, as did the parents who came along.

Each week the children showed up with smiling faces and were ready for some fun, and by the end of the program it was fantastic to see the improvements in all the participants.

Last but not least I would like to thank all the parents for bringing the kids along and helping out on Friday afternoons. I hope to see everyone back again for another season. .

UNDER 8

Without a doubt, the 2007/08 Springwood U8’s team was a team of many talented young cricketers. The team of 11 consisted of 10 boys whom were newcomers to the sport but had obviously spent a lot of time in their backyards or out on the street learning the national game. This made teaching the boys a lot easier and from training day 1, it mostly became a Coaches task of honing their individual skills. As per seasons prior, we enjoyed mixed success and as their coach, I felt much satisfaction and pride in watching everyone advance significantly within the many skill sets that the game of cricket requires. Our team of little champions proved themselves to be a formidable foe on most occasions, and always displayed good behaviour and spirit toward the opposition.

A season report would not be complete without offering a very special thankyou to all the parents for their assistance with scoring and supporting the kids. In particular, David Williams and Scott Saunders assistance was extremely appreciated.

The Mums and Dad’s should all be commended for the courtesy and manners that they have obviously instilled within the raising of these children. They are all great kids.

A quick testament to the kid’s individual season’s follows:-

Lachlan Bignall

Always sporting a grin the size of the Luna Park entrance, Lachlan had a great premier season of cricket. With the willow, he was always good for getting a hand full of runs often highlighted with a “four” in his innings. He often made everyone laugh as he stayed at his crease admiring a pull shot that he thought would go to the boundary, only to score a single once it pulled up in the grass. Lachlan achieved 43 runs at an average of 11. With the ball he developed a fast slinging action that provided him with 7 wickets. In the field, he proved to be a spirited fielder, with a strong accurate return to the stumps. A great effort by a lovely kid.

Ryan Mulvaney

From training day one it was obvious that Ryan had played a lot of back yard cricket. When bowling, he had a flowing run up and a nice action which often created pace that frightened the batsman and/or our keeper, which saw him take 6 wickets in the process. Ryan’s talents also included the batting department where he judged and called runs well, and often hit “fours” off wayward bowling. He scored the team’s highest aggregate with 51 runs at an average of 10. He also showed flair in the field taking catches and affecting many run outs. I look forward to watching Ryan’s cricket develop over the next few seasons.

Damien Linnegar

Unfortunately Damien found his maiden cricket season a bit boring, however was keen when batting and bowling. With the willow he scored a total of 5 runs, and with the ball was beginning to display an improved action. When focused, Damien was capable and successful.

Liam Dalley

Liam had a wonderful first season of cricket both with the bat and the ball. Using his tall physique to advantage he has a great bowling action and a rare U8 ability to control swing. Liam achieved the team’s best bowling figures capturing 8 wickets with only 5 wides for the season. With the bat, he accrued 36 runs at an average of 12. A great result for a quiet achiever.

6

Joshua Williams

Josh’s first cricket season saw him become one of the best improvers of the team. Most notable of the improvement was his bowling. By seasons end Josh possessed a slippery slinging bowling action that saw him capture 2 wickets and many near misses. With his trusty Kookaburra bat he developed and often displayed text book defence, and got himself 11 runs. In the field, Josh often got bored however his chasing and throwing were both exceptional. Well done!

Cooper Smith

Cooper enjoyed his maiden cricket season displaying a keen attitude when batting and bowling. With the willow he scored a total of 15 runs at an average of nearly 2, and with the ball he displayed a good bowling action that saw him take 2 wickets. As often is the case, he found fielding uninteresting but would spring toward the ball when it came his way. When focused, Cooper is very capable. Well done!

William Brazier

I really enjoyed coaching Bill. His tall physique, and his ability to listen and be coached, saw him become a real good bowler. Bill also displayed a very good talent behind the stumps in a keeping capacity. Bill’s bowling saw him take 3 wickets along with achieving many maiden overs. With the bat he was no slouch either, scoring 23 runs while only being dismissed the once. A good season Bill!

Callan Sutcliffe

I first spotted Callan’s cricket talents at a soccer end of season function where a game of cricket took place. His maiden season saw his excellent bowling action rewarded with 9 wickets, and he scored 20 runs at an average of 3 with the bat. As a fielder he featured often and was always a threat to the batsman when they attempted a run on his strong accurate arm. Callan will develop into a great bowler with his flowing effortless rhythm.

Cameron Fenner

In three years of coaching, I don’t think I have coached a more determined kid. Cameron displayed a love for being involved. In the field he constantly walked in with the bowler eagerly, and when bowling he is anxious to get the ball whistling past the batsman with his big strong slinging technique. His perseverance was rewarded with 3 wickets, and 13 runs with the bat. Well done big fella!

Jack Hutchings

Jack is a keen and enthusiastic young cricketer who never stops smiling. His passion is batting where he displays a good eye, and a fast pace running between the wickets. Jack scored 11 runs at an average of 2. With the ball, Jack wants to be Shane Warne. Bowling his leg breaks he took 1 wicket, and with practice will get better once he learns to pitch the ball further forward. Jack is a reliable team player. As a fielder he is spirited and walks in with the bowler.

Ewan Rogers

This season Ewan developed a great bowling action that saw him bowl without much luck. He managed only the 1 wicket accompanied by many a near miss and LBW’s had this been within the U8 rules. With the bat, Ewan can utilise correct technique and he calls runs between the wickets well. He accrued 17 runs for the season at an average of 2. Ewan finds fielding boring but for a 6 year old, he plays beyond his age. In time Ewan will be a good all rounder.

7

Jackson Saunders

Jackson was a joy to coach and watch improve. Displaying the most determined attitude to succeed, he achieved 5 runs with a very correct batting technique, and with the ball produced himself a much improved bowling action. On the odd occasion Jackson found himself injured, but his dogged perseverance came through and he never left the crease. He is always attentive in the field and proved to be an excellent team player. With his passion and ability to listen, I have no doubt that Jackson will become a good batsman over the next few seasons.

Well done everyone and thanks for the efforts.

Best regards,

Matt Rogers

UNDER 10

With nine new players and the majority of them playing above their age group it was going to be a challenging season for the team. There were so many great individual performances throughout the season with the side finishing with a record of 3 wins, 12 losses and 3 drawn matches.

It was a great experience for me to witness their improvement with each game, whilst being a competitive team in few of the games. My only regret is not giving some of the boys more opportunities in the keeping role, as we found 2 good keepers in Harry and Tristan with their 1st attempt on in the last match of the season.

PLAYER PERFORMANCES

Tristan Challenger: His first year of cricket started off slowly but his perseverance to improve in all areas of his game throughout the season was rewarding from a coaches point of view. With the bat he scored 4 runs with a H.S of 1* and bowled well in spells without any luck.

James Churchill: In his first year of playing he really took to the game and improved his batting and with the bat he scored 13 runs @ 2.6 with a H.S of 6*. In the field took 3 wickets @ 23 and took a catch.

Matthew Hunt: As one of the experienced cricketers in the team, he led by example across all facets of the game. With the bat he scored 92 runs @ 18.4 with a H.S of 25* Ret and in the field he took 11 wickets @ 7.18, 4 catches and affected 3 direct hit run outs. (Coaches Award)

Harry Kadi: Harry tried very hard in all areas of the game and he will be much better next season by the experience. With the bat he scored 6 with a H.S of 6* and in the field took 3 wickets @ 42, 4 Catches and assisted 4 run outs.

Bailey Madgwick: Returning to cricket after a season, Bailey’s season did not start until round ? due to an injured arm. He appeared to have picked up from where he left off in terms of his batting with some good partnership throughout the season. With the bat he scored 22 runs @ 7.33 with a H.S of 9 and his best bowling was 0/8.

Maddison Mewett: She became an invaluable part of the team in the role of wicket keeper which she shared throughout the season and was enthusiastic in all areas of the game. With the bat she scored 36 runs @ 5.1 with a H.S of 11 and in the field she took 4 wickets @ 20.5 and assisted with 2 run outs.

Aaron Mitchell: His first season of cricket proved to be a learning one. He improved both his batting and bowling throughout the season and batted with determination in holding up one end in many innings. With the bat he scored 1 run and in the field he took 1 wicket @ 121 and with a little more luck should have had another 3 had they not been called as late no balls.

Jayson Orton: His first season of cricket proved to be a productive one, scoring 81 runs @ 8.1 with a H.S of 23 in his last innings of the season. In the field he took 6 wickets @ 14, 2 Catches and affected 1 direct hit run out. He continually improved throughout the season, so the opposition should watch out next season. (Encouragement Award)

Jacob Patterson: He proved to be a very valuable member of the team with both bat and ball again this season. With the bat he scored 58 runs @ 8.29 with a H.S of 14 and in the field he took 2 wickets @ 41, 3 catches and assisted with 4 run outs. Jacob fulfilled the role as one of team’s wicket keepers with ease and improved as the season went on. (Fielding Award)

Ryan Parlato: Another one of our pocket rockets, Ryan was always enthusiastic with his bowling and improved in his batting. With the bat he scored 4 runs with a H.S of 1* and in the field took 2 wickets @ 26.6 and a catch.

9 Sam Porter: In his first season of cricket, he started of with a flury with the bat scoring his highest score in one of this earlier innings and generally improved his bowling throughout the season. With the bat he scored 38 runs @ 6.33 with a H.S of 27* Ret, in the field he took 1 wicket and a catch.

David Robertson: David unfortunately did not enjoy his experience which saw him play only a handful of games. However with the bat he scored 1 run and had the best bowling figures of 0/7.

Douglas Rogers: As another of the experienced cricketers in the team, he proved to be reliable in all areas. With the bat he scored 86 runs @ 14.33 with a H.S of 25* Ret and in the field he took 5 wickets @ 19, 4 Catches (2 as WK) and involved in 3 run outs. (Batting Award)

Hamish Rogers: The team’s little Boonie, playing against players 3 years his senior and in a lot of cases twice his size. He showed a huge level of commitment to improving his game and was always looking for new ways to score a run. With the bat he scored 30 runs @ 4.29 with a H.S of 10* and in the field he took 8 wickets @ 14.33 and involved in 1 run out. (Bowling Award)

Ewan Rogers: Not wanting to be out done by his big brothers, when the call came he was always eager to take the field to assist the team. He bowled 4 overs for 22 and narrowly missed a wicket in his first attempt with a real ball on a full length pitch. Who knows what he would have done if we let him have a bat.

SUMMARY

While we didn’t win a great deal of game this season, the statistics proved that the boys’ performance improved throughout the season and were unlucky not to win a few of the close games. However, the parents should be proud as all players displayed commitment, dedication and above all excellent sportsmanship throughout the season.

I would like to thank the parents for putting their hand up to score during the season. Scoring can be a pain but if enough people share the load then it’s not such a big deal.

Finally, I would like to thank Colin Orton for his assistance at the weekly training sessions and coaching the side in my absence.

Hopefully we can do it all again next season.

Cheers, Grant Hunt (Coach

UNDER 11-1

The Under 11’s had a great season, finishing as Premiers.

At the start of the season the Springwood team had a mix of new players, experienced boys and boys playing up above their age. They all pulled together and in the final it was their teamwork and focus that saw them through. The competition was very fierce all year and only 1 point separated the top three teams at the end of the regular season.

Thanks to all the parents for their help during the year and a special thanks to Daniel Sparkes for helping out so effectively in the grand final.

Nathan Brokman was the team’s fielding dynamo. He took 5 catches in the season and scored 76 runs. Nathan’s best bowling figures were 3 for 10 and took 11 wickets in the season. His ‘S’ style run in to bowl often fooled the other teams. Remember the train tracks!

Joel Carter in his first season made 12 runs, took 4 wickets and made three catches. His most memorable wicket was the first wicket breakthrough in the grand final. He clean bowled the opener with a super spooky slow ball. He always asked “is it my turn to bowl now”?

Isaac Condie was the demon bowler of the division. He was often too fast and swinging for the batsman to even get a touch. His best figures were 3 for 6 off 8 overs in the grand final. He took 12 wickets in total. Isaac played a very straight bat and scored 96 runs in the season with a high score of 41.

Joshua Lambert developed into a wizard leg spinner through the season. This was his first season at trying spin and he improved every game. He scored 48 runs and opened the batting in the final and semi-final. His best figures were 3 for 11 and he took 10 wickets in the season.

James Newton is an outstanding cricketer. His batting this season was nothing short of fantastic. He scored 581 runs in the season, a high score of 81, and an average of 116! James also took 17 wickets with the best being 3 for 8. He also wicket kept with 2 stumpings and 8 catches in total.

Jeremy Newton was the team’s little guy. His enthusiasm for cricket was infectious. Though playing with boys a couple of years older his speed between the wickets was great. He scored 40 runs and his best bowling was 2 for 7. He took 6 wickets in the season.

Will Philips enjoyed bowling this season. His left arm swingers fooled plenty of batsman. In the last game of the regular season Will had an outstanding match. He took 3 for 13 off 8 with 2 maidens. He also pulled off a great run out. He took 6 wickets overall and scored 40 runs in the season.

Bennett Stower was new to cricket and was recruited into the team a few games into season. His enthusiasm saw him through. His best bowling was 1 for 7 and he scored a total of 5 runs. He made fine leg his place of the field! His ball magnet fielding in the final was awesome.

Harrison Stower improved all parts of his game over the year. He was always ready to go for the big hit. He scored 25 runs and his best bowling was 1 for 4. He took three wickets.

Cameron Terry played up a year and was a key part of the team’s bowling attack. Though he could only bowl two overs in a spell he took 9 wickets in the year and his best was 3 for 4. His favourite drill practice

11 was catching (not) but it paid off and he took a great catch in the grand final. He scored 32 runs in the season with a high score of 15.

Jamie Winn was the team captain and he passionately led from the front. In the final he shouted himself hoarse. He took 5 wickets in the season and his best was 1 for 11. Jamie batted well and scored 95 runs in the season. His high score was 23. Jamie helped behind the stumps and took 3 catches in the year.

Well done boys and bring on 2008/09!

UNDER 11-2

An enjoyable season was had by the U11/2’s and their loyal band of followers. The team showed great promise however the quality of their cricket was not always reflected in the scorebook. All the boys improved and the way they came together as a team was just what the coach wanted to see. The boys played their cricket with an excellent spirit and showed respect to each other, their opponents and the game.

Joshua Arndell batted beautifully at times and chipped in with wickets with his accurate left arm seamers. His fielding was outstanding and he led the competition in catches and run outs.

James Colless impressed with his level head and ability to take on the tough jobs. James kept the batting together at times with his tenacity and straight bat. He did an excellent job in the shared ‘keeping role and showed promise with his big spinning off breaks.

Zachary Hameister always valued his wicket and worked tirelessly in the field. Zachary’s bowling improved out of sight and he showed that he has the ability to make the most of the new ball. Zachary’s opening spell against Emu Plains was one of the of the “spells of the year”.

Joshua Kay showed what enthusiasm is all about. Josh always gave 100% and the improvement in his game was outstanding. Josh was up amongst the leading wicket takers because of his energy and full length.

Dan Manning impressed with his selfless attitude and team spirit. Dan’s batting took a step up this season and he played some important innings. His bowling was accurate and nothing got through him in the field.

Patrick Moloney showed what hard work can achieve. His batting showed great improvement and his bowling really came of age. Patrick’s haul of wickets show the value of bowling “line and length”.

Jack Moore finished the season as our Captain. Jack had an excellent all round year and contributed with the bat, ball and in the field. His enthusiasm and selflessness were an example to the team.

Tom Moore really improved with his bowling. When he got his out swinger going he was a threat to any batter. Tom was the “rover” in the field and did a great job by filling in all the positions. Tom showed promise with the bat and if he keeps working hard the runs will flow.

Lyndon Moss toiled away with the ball and was our unluckiest bowler. His wrist spinners threatened to take wickets and he impressed with his ability to take the ball away from the bat at good speed. Lyndon worked hard on his batting and was always solid in the field.

Daniel “Doc” O’Connor showed that when his game is “on” he is capable of playing excellent cricket. “Doc” regularly took wickets with his seamers and played one of the best innings of the year when he top scored against the minor premiers in the last round.

Daniel Sparkes came of age with his batting this season and he played some excellent innings. His bowling continued to improve and his fielding and ‘keeping’ was always of a high standard. Daniel provided excellent support to the team in his role as Vice Captain.

Lachlan Weber had an excellent first season in cricket. His bowling was accurate and his fielding of a high standard. Lachlan always put a high price on his wicket and played straight.

13

The support offered by parents and family was greatly appreciated and contributed to the season. Without committed parents the players don’t play. Thanks to Ian Colless, Luke Moore, Paul Hameister, Andrew Kay and Jeremy Moss for their assistance at training.

Cath O’Connor and David Moss shared the bulk of the scoring duties and their effort was really appreciated.

Wayne Moloney not only did the Manager’s job superbly he also did most of my job as well. Thanks Wayne.

UNDER 12

What a great year for the boys reaching the semi-finals and playing the perfect game to defeat Emu Plains and go on to their first grand final. Even though they went down by 17 runs to St Mary’s Leagues they can be proud of their efforts and I know the parents were proud of the way they played. A big thank you again to Libby Conway for managing the team and leaving me to simply look after the boys. Thanks also to Michael and Clinton for helping with the coaching duties. I’m sure everyone would like to thank Dave for his scoring efforts throughout the year, and Stuart for helping with the umpiring.

Brad Conway led the team as Captain very well and looked after the team fantastically during the final series. His bowling was consistent as ever seeing him take the . We saw glimpses of his batting skills throughout the season and I’m sure we are yet to see the best of Brad with the bat.

Pat Rosato had a super year with the bat scoring 316 runs at an average of 39.5 and taking out the batting award. His high score of 86no was on a wet field where only five fours were hit all day! His wicket keeping towards the end of the season was great, and as Vice Captain he positioned the field well.

Jace Cross had a consistent year with the bat finishing second in the aggregate and average. He became very solid in the latter half of the season sharing in some great partnerships, the highlight being the semi-final when he came to the crease at 3-17 chasing 110 and shared a 79 run partnership with Pat. He bowled some great off-spinners late in the year.

Jacob New played his first season of cricket and was rewarded with the Coach’s Award. He was our leading wicket taker with 18 wickets, most of which fell either bowled or LBW to his fast, well pitched up deliveries. His batting was solid and had him in third place in aggregate and average. He will only get better in the years ahead.

Luke Lehman had another consistent year seeing him end up opening both the batting and bowling. His consistency with the new ball saw him take 14 wickets throughout the year and his accuracy saw him take many of these LBW. He was often unlucky with the bat, but I’m sure this will change. Luke is a great team player who always gives 100%.

Aiden Williams had his best year of cricket yet and was integral to the team reaching the semi-finals. His bowling improved markedly throughout the year and his big hitting batting style will leave him scaring the opposition teams in the years ahead. He was rewarded with the fielding award for his wicket keeping and some fantastic catches in the field. Just think how many more he would take if he kept on his feet!

Ben Kearns played his first year of cricket and showed just how talented his is. His pace bowling had opposition batsmen jumping while his strong batting style continued to improve. His innings in the grand final was his finest and sets him up well for next season. His fielding was solid, and his returns from the boundary were awesome. Ben was rewarded with the team Encouragement Award.

Chris Rea had a great year with both the bat and ball. His batting was consistent and he shared many great partnerships throughout the year. He also consistently pitched the ball up all year and ended up taking some big wickets. He always put his body on the line in the field and I’m sure he ended up with a lot of bruises!

Connor McClement continued to improve his cricket skills. His batting was more consistent and he played some lovely shots in his left handed style. He always pitched the ball up at the batsman and was hard to score from as a result. He was one of the hardest working at training and took a couple of great catches.

15 Luke Smalley played his first season of cricket and improved markedly throughout the year. He started to use his feet much more towards the end of the year and put more value on his wicket. His bowling was great once he learnt to pitch the ball right up at the batsman. His fielding in mid wicket was skillful and he pulled off some fantastic stops.

Ethan Parlato did well in his first year with the team. He put his hand up to do some wicket keeping and improved this skill throughout the year. By the time the grand final came around his bowling had improved greatly and he took some great wickets through the year. He continued to work on his batting and he will continue to improve in years to come.

Aodan Wilkinson was once again one of our best team players. His wicket keeping was solid and he continued to improve these skills. He showed glimpses of his batting style and his keen eye. He played some wonderful shots in the grand final. His bowling was much more consistent this year and in the grand final he even came in off his long run!

Upgraded to first division would have been playing on the boys minds in the off season, but being reigning second division champions, gave them some confidence although the task was rather daunting. With three new players which had never played cricket before it gave the coach some reservations about the season ahead. With great determination, Coach Paul Woodland set about his coaching techniques & tactics with the team. In there first game of the season, they were rewarded with a win. Although as time showed every team was finding there way with new players. Springwood recorded another two wins for the season to slide into fourth place on the ladder. There was a notable difference leading up to this period, the new players were finding there feet & gaining confidence. They could mix it with the best of them. The bowling & fielding of the team was starting to improve dramatically, threatening once dominant teams to a point of, “we can do this” attidude. The mental physique & team spirit starting to peak at the right end of the season. Semi-final vs. the top of the ladder team, Glenbrook/Blaxland. Springwood defending the modest total of 107.Glenbrook/Blaxland was cruising until a crucial wicket fall at 5/64.This set about a collapse; all out for 83.The boys absolutely cockahoot & parents ecstatic .Springwood had got to the grand final of Div1 in their first season. Knowing they were a threat, Glenmore Park were not under estimating Springwood. Winning the toss Springwood put Glenmore Park into bat, all out for 82 runs. Springwood batting out the final hour of play finished on top at 2/49. Day2, GlenmorePark came out firing, this was not going to be a lay down misere. Glenmore Park were in the hunt, right up to the last two overs, Springwood all out for 86 & declared winners. It makes exciting cricket when great team work is required to achieve the win – well done boys.

UNDER 14-1

Success can be measured in a number of ways. Results are an obvious parameter by which to measure the success of any team and the performance of the Under 14’s indicates another successful season. Semi finalists in a very strong competition and impressive results throughout the season in a variety of circumstances are indicative of the success experienced by the team. Player development is another way to measure how well a team has performed, and again, the 14’s have impressed. Cricket is a game that requires both physical and mental skill, and the members of the team have all shown on occasions throughout the season impressive development in both of these facets of the game. But probably the most important measurement of the success of the team is the joy they get from playing the game, and here the Under 14’s have excelled. They have enjoyed the good times and successes during the season, but have also rallied to support each other through the tough times. Another important contributor to the success of any junior team is the involvement of the parents. A lot of the success this team has experienced is directly attributable to the support shown by the parents, be it through scoring, helping out at training or with the seemingly endless tasks on a Saturday morning to get the team on the field. It has been a pleasure to be involved with this group of fine young men and women. I hope that cricket remains a source of great happiness to them all throughout their lives, and that they are all back next season ready to continue along their cricketing path.

UNDER 14-2

In a four team competition, where the other 3 teams come from a solid background of experience, it is always going to be hard to compete. Add to that a mix of players of varying ability, experience and ages, and it becomes even trickier. So it proved to be for the Under 14/2 team. Often we were a player or two down due to barely having 11 in the first place. But the players never surrendered, always bouncing with enthusiasm no matter what the result, and determined in mind if not in practice, to deal their formidable opponents some hefty blows. Patience and tactics were not necessarily our strong points, and sometimes the temptation to try and smash a quick fire 100 in the face of stiff opposition, rather than carefully compiling a solid 20, was just too much and led to a few batting collapses.

Although not winning a game, we did manage to stave off a few outrights, and there were some absolutely stunning innings throughout the season. The team were always supportive of each other and their enthusiasm and geniality were unmatched anywhere.

Lewis Chesworth – Usually opened the bowling and was our leading wicket taker. Lewis always troubled the opposition batsmen with good line, length and movement. An enthusiastic member of our team always on his toes and ready to move.

Geordie Fox – Geordie is a very keen cricketer who put his hand up when we needed an opening batsman. He also proved a handful for the opposition with the ball. A great team player who never missed a week.

Ben Parkin – Our top run scorer who was unlucky to be dismissed just short of a half century on 48. Ben also played a vital role in the bowling attack, taking many wickets and fielding tirelessly.

Zac Hussain – An outstanding fielder with a strong, accurate arm, a safe pair of hands and the ability to cover a lot of ground while being prepared to throw himself at the ball. As the season progressed, Zac’s bowling efforts improved markedly as he learnt how to bend his back and really get some power into his action. A handy batsman who knows how to take runs.

Ollie Denny – Our other opening batsman who was always difficult to dismiss. A fine, enthusiastic fielder who possessed a good cricket mind and was up to the challenge of understanding field settings.

Giles McLoughlin – Our pocket dynamo wicket keeper who always gave 100%, throwing himself enthusiastically into the job. A handy batsman, who scored many runs facing older and bigger opponents.

Sean McLoughlin – Had a good all round season with some strong performances in every aspect of the game – scoring runs, taking wickets and fielding powerfully. Sean was one of our senior players and a leader on the field. Often drew comments from the opposition about the strength of his bowling action.

Daniel Patterson – An aggressive batsman, capable of scoring quick runs and of putting together a tidy innings. Also handy with the ball on occasion, and helped out more than capably as our back up keeper.

Josh Sayers – Our leg spin bowler whose season was interrupted by injury, which meant he didn’t get a chance to reach his full potential this year. Josh still managed to trouble many batsmen in those games he was able to participate in.

20

Ashleigh Schoer – This was Ashleigh’s first season, and her infectious enthusiasm and love of the game never wavered. She claimed some big wickets, and showed her improving skills throughout the competition. Her season was capped off with selection in a rep squad.

Cassie Williamson – Another first year player, who was a quiet achiever, but dogged in her persistence. Cassie improved markedly each week, and was stoic at the crease. She also gained selection in a rep squad

UNDER 15/16 DIV 1

Twelve enthusiastic players were very positive in their promotion back to Division 1 Cricket for the 2007/08 season. The team goals were to win every game they played and to never giver up despite difficult circumstances . They achieved those goals by winning 2 games and unfortunate to draw 2 others due to wet weather when in winning positions . The team fought out every game and did not lose any games outright. Batting partnerships were a big improvement for this season including ; 95 for the 4th wicket – Jono Lees and Harley Stibbard 75 for the 1st wicket – Menake Rambukkana and Dylan Krasny 75 for the 9th wicket – Harley Stibbard and Liam Denny 58 for the 8th wicket – Harley Stibbard and Josh Abbey 52 for the 3rd wicket – Harley Stibbard and Jono Lees.

Team Stats

Jono Lees – Captain and upper order bat scored 176 runs with high score of 69 after a slow start to the season . Jono collected 10 wickets and took 4 catches . A representative player who also experienced the senior grades this season , Jono will achieve even better performances next year.

Harley Stibbard – Vice Captain and middle order bat scored 245 runs with high score of 132 not out. Harley took 14 wickets , best figures 4-14 with 6 catches . Harley is a future representative player , having experienced senior cricket this season , whose batting single handedly won 2 games . Harley has potential as a classical all rounder.

Menake Rambukkana – Express left arm fast bowler took 15 wickets with a best 4-37. Menake bravely opened the batting scoring 159 runs with a top score of 55 when he combined aggressive shot making with thoughtful defence . Also took 6 catches. Menake has the potential to score a century as well as take 10 wickets in an innings.

Will Tredinnick – Fast medium opening bowler took 10 wickets with best 4-16. Scored 106 runs quickly with the bat .Will has the talent to perform impressively in Senior cricket.

Dylan Krasny – Promising all round cricketer with thoughtful batting , often as opener scoring 77 runs with the best 32 not out . Dylan’s bowling was economical taking 6 wickets and Senior Cricket will see the best of Dylan’s talents next season.

Liam Denny – Talented all rounder took 11 wickets with a best of 4-22 and scored 50 runs . Liam also experienced senior cricket this season and has all the potential to be a top cricketer.

Josh Abbey – Upper order batsman who made some promising starts against good bowling attacks only to lose concentration from 10 -20 .Josh scored 69 runs, took 4 catches and had 7th Grade experience to make him a better player next season .

Nathan Gegg – Team wicket keeper and handy lower order bat scored 40 runs including a best score of 12. Nathan took 9 catches and performed strongly in the team and enjoyed several games in 7th Grade .A real improver for senior cricket.

Jake Lewer – Terrific team member who volunteered to bat anywhere required in the order scoring 27 runs.Jake took 8 wickets including a best 3-21 plus 4 catches.

22 Troy Dawes – Recovered from missing games at the start of the season to take 3 wickets including a best of 2-22 and score 15 runs .

Tom Madgwick – Recovered from missing earlier games to be a popular team member scoring 4 runs and taking 2 catches.

Alex Sheerman – Returned to junior cricket after a 3 season break , Alex made the most of limited opportunities scoring 6 runs , taking 2 wickets and 1 catch.

It was a pleasure to train and manage all the boys and we wish them every success entering senior cricket for Springwood next season.

UNDER 15/16 DIV 2

What a pleasure to see the boys enjoying their cricket and supporting each other this season. It was a real team effort on and off the field with plenty of help from parents filling in when needed. Even though we missed out on the semi finals the boys showed good form during the middle part of the season and narrowly lost a few games that would have seen us finish in the four. Our team has another season playing U16 in 2008/9 and the boys have vowed to stick together and give the comp a good shake. Mitchell Cawley and David Jansen were important to the team when we needed batsmen to stick around or wickets were needed and both benefited from experience as the season unfolded. Joshua “Big Hitter” Patterson was desperately unlucky not to post a big score this year when he looked in dangerous form while taking some valuable wickets with his tough to hit bowling style. Joseph Hunt and Maclane Mitchell proved to be, at times, immovable as an opening partnership and often set the team up for a big score. Both boys also contributed with the ball. Callum Williams batted with pure brilliance through the season and on one occasion posting a chanceless ton. He also opened the bowling will quick accurate deliveries. Oliver Summerfield-Ryan showed his worth with both the bat and ball and showed how valuable he is to the team with great bowling figures week after week. Luke Jones established himself as a true all rounder guarding his wicket when needed and bowling accurately whenever given the chance. Taylor Gracie’s hard hitting promised to develop as the season went on, but was desperately missed during the second part of the season with injury. Joel Smalley always put his head down and tried hard protecting his wicket and putting his all into his overs. Joel trained hard and was always the last to leave the nets. Jason Thrift was great behind the stumps keeping to some wayward deliveries and tough swinging balls. Jason also combined well in the middle and usually got the score going with the bat. Our captain Jesse Miton bowled excellently and showed his character in leading the side this year. His influence on the boys while fielding contributed to a triple AAA sportsmanship rating which is rare in the game. This feature of our team makes coaching the side a pleasure. I would like to thank all who helped with the team this year especially Scott who coached and mentored the team during the week and Caroline who managed the team and helped influence our positive team spirit. Also thanks to Col and Phil for your help in umpiring and all those who helped with scoring.
