Well, it took the commencement of the cricket season to signal the beginning of the end for draught conditions across the state. The 2007/08 season was the most punctuated season for many years but, in the wider scheme of things, nobody really seemed to mind, if it took cricket to break the draught then all was not lost. For the cricket that was played, Springwood Cricket Club had a very successful season culminating in a number of teams reaching the finals and winning both the Under 11 and Under 13 Division 1 premierships. Given that our Under 12 team came so close to premiership glory this augers very well for the long term prospects of our club. All of the other junior teams remained competitive throughout the season. We experienced a growth in numbers for our Senior grades with 5 teams competing in the Nepean competition for the first time in many years. Again our teams were very competitive and although only one senior team made the Semi Finals there were some outstanding individual performances. All in all, our stocks of playing talent from under 8 right through to, dare I say it, “ The ROYALS” is very good. Lets not also forget the highly successful “ Have – a – go “ programme which continues to attract large numbers but was also severely hampered by the weather . The challenge for our club is to improve our conversion of these players from this programme to the next level of cricket. From an administration perspective your Committee was very pro active this year. A number of new processes were introduced. I wish to thank and congratulate the Committee on for their thorough professionalism for doing, what is at times, a thankless task. As I have stated many times over the years in my report new blood is required all of the time on any club committee and Springwood Cricket Club is no exception. Can I again encourage people to come along and join the Committee and help to administer this very successful Club which by the way is now approaching some 115 years off age, the second oldest cricket club in NSW. On behalf of the Committee can I thank everyone involved in our Club for the 2007-08 season. My thanks to all of the junior coaches, managers and all of those wonderful parent supporters that make junior cricket possible. To the captains of the senior teams also thanks for a job well done. To the committee, your stewardship of this club has been outstanding having to deal with some very difficult issues and in doing so displaying a thoroughly professional approach without fear or favour!! Personally, at the time of writing this report, I am unsure if I will be standing as President next season. A period of 10 years in the chair is a very long time and I feel that it may be time for a new person with fresh ideas to take the lead of this Committee. Whatever is my ultimate decision, please be assured that I am very proud to have presided over this great club and the wonderful people whom are Springwood Cricket. Peter Filmer 3 JUNIOR PERPETUAL TROPHY WINNERS JUNIOR CRICKETER OF THE YEAR: Mathew Newton This season’s Junior cricketer of the year had a great season, leading his side to a berth in the semi final. Whether it was batting, bowling or keeping wickets, Mathew performed with distinction. He scored 245 runs at an average of 27.22, took 11 wickets at 14.00 with the ball and was responsible for 6 dismissals behind the stumps. His highest score of the year was an entertaining 81 against St. Clair. MOST PROMISING JUNIOR CRICKETER: James Newton James had a tremendous season leading the U11-1s’ batting line-up with maturity beyond his years. His batting that netted him 581 runs at a staggering average of 116.20, including a highest score of 81 not out. His safe hands held 8 catches and he took 17 wickets at 5.06. PAUSEY SHIELD: Hamish Lees (Junior Clubman of the Year) The Pausey Shield for Junior Clubman of the Year is not awarded for superb ability on the field, though Hamish had that in spades: 167 runs at 20.88, 8 catches and 12 wickets at 11.58. What caught the attention of everyone in the club was the way Hamish embodied the spirit of cricket that exists in our club. His sportsmanship was indicative of the way we all would like to play cricket, and see cricket played. His good performances on the field were no more important than the way he went about his ‘work’, as his U14-1 side marched towards the semi finals. Hamish also helped out with the Milo Have-a-Go program this season As well as performing brilliantly in the juniors, Hamish also filled in for our senior teams (2nd, 4th and 7th grades) with little fuss and was more than up to the task of performing at that level. 2007-2008 CENTURY SCORERS AGE GROUP DATE PLAYER SCORE OPPONENT 15/16 DIV. 1 17/11/07 HARLEY STIBBARD 132* Colyton-St.Clair 15/16 DIV. 2 27/10/07 CALLUM WILLIAMS 100 Emu Plains 2007-2008 5 WICKETS IN AN INNINGS AGE GROUP DATE PLAYER FIGURES OPPONENT 2007-08 HAT-TRICKS 4 MILO HAVE-A-GO CRICKET 2007-2008 Another year over and another successful season for our Milo Have-A-Go cricketers at Springwood Cricket Club. The numbers remained similar to last season with almost 75 registrations. It was fantastic to again see an increased number of girls taking up cricket. The aim of this program is to introduce young children to cricket, and teach them some basic skills. The program ran over 10 weeks, however due to constant ran, this went after the Christmas break and well into the new year. The program ran for children aged 4 to 8 years old to teach them skills of cricket, but at the same time find enjoyment from the game. Special thanks must go to Scott Filmer, Luke O’Carrigan, Cameron Bryant, Jono Lees, Hamish Lees, Matthew Poynting, Sam Tucker & Menake Rambukkana. All these boys play in differing teams for Springwood and were a magnificent help week in and week out in running this program smoothly. This year Springwood was chosen to go down to the Sydney Test and play diamond cricket on the filed during the lunch break. Cricket NSW decided the 2nd day would be girls day, and 7 of our stars went down and showed off their skills. The girls had a great day, as did the parents who came along. Each week the children showed up with smiling faces and were ready for some fun, and by the end of the program it was fantastic to see the improvements in all the participants. Last but not least I would like to thank all the parents for bringing the kids along and helping out on Friday afternoons. I hope to see everyone back again for another season. Adam Thomas Milo Have-A-Go Co-ordinator 5 UNDER 8 Without a doubt, the 2007/08 Springwood U8’s team was a team of many talented young cricketers. The team of 11 consisted of 10 boys whom were newcomers to the sport but had obviously spent a lot of time in their backyards or out on the street learning the national game. This made teaching the boys a lot easier and from training day 1, it mostly became a Coaches task of honing their individual skills. As per seasons prior, we enjoyed mixed success and as their coach, I felt much satisfaction and pride in watching everyone advance significantly within the many skill sets that the game of cricket requires. Our team of little champions proved themselves to be a formidable foe on most occasions, and always displayed good behaviour and spirit toward the opposition. A season report would not be complete without offering a very special thankyou to all the parents for their assistance with scoring and supporting the kids. In particular, David Williams and Scott Saunders assistance was extremely appreciated. The Mums and Dad’s should all be commended for the courtesy and manners that they have obviously instilled within the raising of these children. They are all great kids. A quick testament to the kid’s individual season’s follows:- Lachlan Bignall Always sporting a grin the size of the Luna Park entrance, Lachlan had a great premier season of cricket. With the willow, he was always good for getting a hand full of runs often highlighted with a “four” in his innings.
