Our season of lent gives us the space to stop for a minute in our hectic world, to pause, reflect, take stock, and reassess. Although the space for most people will be based on the spiritual for many it will also have practical outworking. Have you given anything up for lent? Chocolate, alcohol, biscuits, television, social media? Or have you followed the new trend of taking something up for lent? Not using plastic, giving to food banks, 40 acts of kindness, or daily prayer and Bible reading? Whilst there are benefits in all these things, however we can all too easily, myself included, fall into the trap of thinking that our actions bring us closer to salvation, that through self-improvement we become near to God. And whilst I understand this desire for us to be an agent in our own salvation, the Christian message is that no matter how hard we try we will always fall short, that in our human nature our thoughts and actions have separated us from God’s love and his perfect plan for creation. However, the Gospel of Christ is of good news, of hope when all seems hopeless, of wonderful light where there only seems darkness. And as we journey towards Christ’s passion and crucifixion, his ‘Darkest Friday’ that became our Good Friday, we get to once again relive, remember, all that he did for us - for me, for you, for all who turn to him. For on that cross he became sin for us, taking up on his shoulders all that we could never carry, and having borne all that pain and suffering into the place that we as humans fear most, the Valley of the shadow of death, the best news of all is that his story didn’t end there. That on that bright and glorious first Easter morning the tomb where his friends had laid his body was empty, death had been defeated for ‘He has Risen’. Therefore, this is truly a season of giving up and taking up, the season when Christ gave up his life and took up our sin. And that is why we should also give up and take up, not because through our actions we earn salvation, but in Christs salvation we are now free to walk the way Jesus walked, to make the world and our own communities a better place as he did. That in walking the Christlike way we become his disciples, bringing to others through our lives, our actions, and yes even our words his message of hope and peace and love. I hope and pray at in this Lent and Easter season give you the time to pause and reflect, to take stock and take action. And that you will be able to join us on Easter morn as we take up with all 3the company of heaven the great cry of ‘Christ is risen– He is risen indeed Alleluia!’ Rev. Are you interested in contemplative prayer? If so you would be most welcome to join a Julian group that’s held within the Wensley deanery. A Julian meeting is a small group of people who come together regularly for silent prayer. It is Christ centred and welcomes people of all denominations. While acknowledging the value of other ways of praying at other times, a Julian meeting remains solely for contemplative prayer as a means of making ourselves available to God.
