2 LOOKING AFTER GOD'S OWN COUNTY

This is a time of year when things are growing. After a late cold spring everything has been bursting with life to catch up. The variety of fresh green colour in the trees is always a joy to me at this time of year. Having had an early edition of Richard Mabey's Food For Free since the 1970s I have always been inclined to enjoy a taste of nature. Young beech leaves and bramble tips have excellent flavour, wild garlic too, and nettles make a good soup. God the Creator of all this new life has given us responsibility for looking after all that is good in the natural world. Sadly, there is much evidence that we are living in an age of extinction of species of fauna and flora, unprecedented in scale and rapidity. When I first owned a car, before the days of screenwash buttons, when driving at night the windscreen would become encrusted with insect life. Now the evidence in a clear windscreen is that some 90% of our flying insects have gone. Insects are critically important in the food chain especially for birds. There is much else in the way we live and exploit resources that threatens biodiversity. Nature programmes on television are hugely popular, showing us the rich diversity of life around us and around the globe. They give us cause for wonder and yes, worship. Yet they nearly all have messages of warning. These include unsustainable logging, quarrying and mining that pollutes water courses, trawling over fragile creatures on the ocean floor, polluting the atmosphere with excess carbon dioxide that leads not only to extremes of climate but to acidity in the sea. This restricts crustaceans in the building of shells. Then on our doorstep farmers have been pushed this way and that by successive policies British and European as well as commercial pressures for the production of food and the care of habitats. This also involves dealing with controversies over the use of pesticides. There are no easy solutions to any of these issues. The most controversial issue being overpopulation. There is a limit to how many of us the world can sustain without desertification. Sir David Attenborough has identified the education of women as being a key. Where women have education, they gain control over so much in their lives and in the destiny of all of us. Educated populations discover that prosperity does not lie in having large families. It is controversial because so many religious traditions including our own Christianity have followed the teaching in Genesis that we should go forth and multiply. Fortunately, our schools are giving a lead in educating a new generation to value wildlife and the need to protect it. Our Diocese has an Environment Officer and a policy to encourage us to live more sustainably. The Diocesan Synod adopted the Diocesan Environment Policy in June 2017. See http://www.leeds.anglican.org/environment Every church is encouraged to make use of the Eco Church programme, registration is simple. This can be adapted into a Parish Environment Policy suitable to local circumstances. There are lots of helpful resources on the Eco Church website. There is a quarterly newsletter entitled God's Green Fingers. Both within the Church and in the circumstances of our own lives we have a duty to live responsibly in relation to God and his wonderful world. Lisle Ryder.

3 A CELEBRATION FOR THE CENTENARY OF THE END OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.

A group of friends from across the area have decided to hold a tea afternoon in memory of the Armistice in 1918.

This came about following a visit to Phoenix House and learning about the amazing work they are doing, for ex servicemen. This will take place on Saturday 18 August from 2pm. There will be various displays of memorabilia, a raffle and afternoon tea im Harmby Village Hall. This is a registered event and All money raised will go to Help for Heroes. If you are able to help in any way please contact Joyce on 01748 812668 or Chris on 01969 622471. More info in next newsletter.

Wensleydale Filling Station Wensleydale Filling Station has been meeting since spring 2013 and grew out of a United Service which had been running once a month for 22 years. This was initially set up as a meeting to which Christians could invite their friends and so was essentially all about telling God’s story for people today. Changing to a Filling Station format has helped us to re-focus on this original vision. Each Filling Station evening starts with Coffee (or other drinks!) and cakes, with an opportunity to chat and relax. Music and worship is contemporary. Speakers are invited from around the country and there is often the opportunity to discuss some of the issues raised. There are normally about 60 people attending each month. You are very welcome to come along each month and bring your friends to hear God’s word in a relaxed and informal way. We meet 7 to 9pm on the second Friday of each month (except January and August) Venue Change From February 2018 onwards, we are changing the Venue for Wensleydale Filling Station. We will meet at Newton Le Willows Village Hall DL8 1SP 19:00 to 21:00 For more information please contact: Pauline Hirst 01969 667841 [email protected] Our next meetings are : June 8 : Chris Bennett -Muswell Hill & London theological seminary July 13 : Martin Dowland – Glossop

5 HACKFORTH & HORNBY CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

2018 is proving to be a busy year. Pupils enjoyed success at The Wensleydale Tournament of Music and Speech: Katrina Dunn was awarded the Mary Palmer Trophy for the highest marks in the Bible Reading (junior section) for a second time and our junior choir enjoyed performing This Little Light of Mine on the impressive stage at the Tennants Garden Rooms in the Unison Song category. At the end of the tournament, we heard that school had been chosen by the adjudicator (speech) to receive the Margery Freeman Memorial Bursary for speech. This was in recognition of strong, individual performances by our junior pupils. In awarding the bursary, the adjudicator expressed her hope that staff would use it, “To further the love for the written word that you have instilled into your students.” As you can imagine, we will be pleased to do so.

We continue to enjoy our sport. Two of our Year 6 pupils represented school creditably in the area cross country competition and, as we have started to take part in The Daily Mile initiative, we anticipate more entries from our increasingly confident runners next year. Juniors are also benefitting from the introduction of lunchtime games sessions across the school: cricket and netball for the juniors and skills practice sessions for the infants. Cycling sessions on Fridays are supporting coordination and confidence for all our pupils. As a well-deserved reward for their commitment to preparing for this month’s SATs, our Year 6 pupils will be taking part in a mountain biking day, exploring Castle Bolton and the surrounding area.

Juniors will be working with The Green Howard Museum to develop the Ribbon of Remembrance to mark the end of World War 1. In addition to a focused local history study, pupils will be working with the historical author, Hilary Robinson for a day, discussing the production of her award-winning WW1 story books and a more recent title about the lost gardeners of Heligan. We will be looking for parallels with the gardeners from Hornby who sacrificed their lives and are remembered in St Mary’s Church.

Finally, we have started to develop Macbeth for our end of year production. Macbeth, the Musical, will be performed in the Village Hall on Thursday 19th July at 2pm. Tickets will be available from the school office, we hope to see you there!

Many thanks to all who helped distribute and collect envelopes for Christian Aid in May and for those who donated – an update will be in next month’s newsletter. THANK YOU

6 AWAY WEEKEND MAY 2018

Many thanks to Revd Chris for organising a relaxing and reflective weekend at Wydale Hall in May. The group may have been smaller than in previous years but we all had a wonderful weekend. The weather was good, the food amazing and the welcome from Wydale Hall staff was exemplary. We explored together what “Welcome” means to us in our life, our faith, and our communities and, having watched a thought - provoking film, what welcome we might expect from God as his children. Check out the website and Facebook page for the Benefice for info and possibly the odd photo or two. Thanks to all who helped make it a successful away weekend. We hope more will join us from the Benefice when we next go on such a venture.

HUNTON & CP SCHOOL NEWS

We had a lovely day at ‘Tennants of Leyburn’ at the end of March when we took part in the Wensleydale Tournament of Song. As we are a small school, all of our children take part in the different classes once they reach Y2 and we were extremely proud of their performances as they had so many songs to learn. We’re never sure quite how they do it, but under Mrs Ash’s teaching, they manage very well! They have recently been invited to perform at Richmond Methodist Church where they included even more songs in their repertoire. In April, Classes 2 & 3 visited the Ryedale Folk Museum where they spent the day as Iron Age people and had wonderful time exploring the roundhouse, making cords from water rush and learning how to defend their tribe with spears! This has linked quite well into their PE lessons this term where they are developing their archery skills. Later in May, Class 1 will be visiting Crakehall Water Mill as part of their learning, inspired by ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’, followed by a nature walk round Crakehall. On their next DEEL Day, they will be sharing their learning with parents on the theme of ‘We are all different’. Our older pupils are about to begin a Young Leaders training scheme so that they will be able to lead activities at playtimes to encourage children to be active and inclusive. They have had to write letters of application to be considered for the role and we are looking forward to seeing them progress with their training.

12 DIOCESAN NEWS JUNE Lay Conference marks a new chapter for lay ministry

This month marks a new chapter for lay ministry in the diocese as hundreds of delegates from churches across the diocese come to Harrogate on Saturday 9 June, for the first ever diocesan wide lay conference, ‘Together in Faith’. Funded by the National Church, this ground-breaking gathering of 1600 participants takes place at the Harrogate Convention Centre and as well as nationally known key- note speakers, resources, displays and more than 20 different ‘self-select’ sessions to choose from during the day, the conference will be the launch-pad for new lay training opportunities. Being seen for the first time is a new diocesan ‘online learning platform’ which will be introduced at the conference giving church members access to a wide range of training and resources. “We have developed our own learning platform which will act as a shop window for courses, events and resources,” says Canon Andrew Norman, Director of Ministry and Mission and chair of the conference planning team. “It will help to make accessible training opportunities and means of equipping lay people for ministry in their local churches and living as Christians during the week.” Keynote speakers include head of the Church Army, Mark Russell. More details can be found on the diocesan website, www.leeds.anglican.org

St, Michael’s Church, Spennithorne will be holding its annual Church Fête on Saturday 14 July between 2pm and 4pm in the grounds of the church.

CRAKEHALL Cof E PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS

After the Easter break, the summer term well and truly launched into action! Crakehall KS2 children were very lucky to have 2 dancers in from the London based company 'Balletboyz' to lead a dance workshop on Thursday 3 May. This followed on from a trip to see the company the night before for staff and some of the children. The dancers were very well received, and the children were taught part of one of the pieces they had performed the previous night. The Tour de Yorkshire (5 May) was a busy but very enjoyable day for all. Starting with school providing bacon and sausage butties and ending with a performance by the samba band and choir. It was lovely to see so many families involved and enjoying the fantastic effort the whole village had made. The children from school also took part in some May pole dancing followed by many

15 volunteer parents, friends and relations. A huge thank you to the staff for all their hard work and effort in putting things together and supporting the community on the day. Last Friday 11 May, two cricket teams took part in the level 2 finals held at Richmond Cricket club. Both teams played very well throughout their games and showed great sportsmanship. The Y5/6 team also managed to get through to the semi-final of their competition, where they faced a tough opponent in Richmond Methodist. They gave a very good account of themselves and never gave up but unfortunately it wasn't to be this time! Well done to the Methodist and St Mary's who advanced to the final and played some superb cricket throughout. It was a fantastic day, and everyone really enjoyed themselves. We would like to wish our Y6 children the very best as they complete their SAT’s assessments this week (Monday 14 May). They have been working very hard throughout the academic year and we are very proud of them and how they represent the school, provide positive role models to our younger pupils and engage in all areas of the school's curriculum (not just academic study). We look forward to the remainder of the summer term and hope the sun continues to shine!

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Tuesday 5 June 2018

“Beat Plastic Pollution”, the theme for World Environment Day 2018, is a call to action for all of us to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time. Chosen by this year’s host, India, the theme of World Environment Day 2018 invites us all to consider how we can make changes in our everyday lives to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our natural places, our wildlife – and our own health. See - worldenvironmentday.global/en for info and ideas such as these…

 Take your own shopping bags to the supermarket

 Pressure food suppliers to use non-plastic packaging. Find your local group.

 Pick up any plastic you see the next time you go for a walk on the beach or in the countryside. If you can’t reuse it, refuse it!
