Jack T Chick Tract Jump V0.03 WIP Jack T Chick Tract Jump v0.03 WIP You may be familiar with the small, proselytizing comics known as Jack Chick Tracts. They generally preach the Christian message – Satan is trying to deceive you, you need to accept Chrsit as your lord and savior or else be damned to an eternity in hell when you “die in your sins”. Jack Chick, the author and cartoonist for some 700-odd tracts, goes farther, however. He warns and argues against such evils as homosexuality, evolution, witchcraft, rock and roll, Masonry, Catholicism, Islam, Mormons, and (famously) role-playing games. This is a jump based on Jack Chick’s nightmare world. It’s much like our own: the devil controls the world, subverting people through media as spirits tempt and misdirect the common man. Witches, inspired by Harry Potter, learn real witchcraft, sacrifice cats and put poison, drugs, and razor blades in candy treats on Halloween. Possession is real, and evil spirits’ influence is not uncommon. There are vampires. Those who truly believe in God’s word are the minority – mocked as bigots, called intolerant and ignorant, publicly shamed as politically incorrect. Forget the Ten Commandments – praying openly, or even talking about Jesus in school or at work can get you in deep trouble. Despite these hardships, there are those who believe – and they are truly Saved, for they know the kingdom of heaven is theirs to inherit. God shines his light on them, guiding and protecting the faithful. At their approach, demons flee and devil-worshipers tremble. They preach that Jesus is the only way to heaven, no matter the risks to their life or reputation. Most people, Deceived by new age spiritualists or their cult leaders that Hell is a myth, want nothing to do with these “fanatics”. Besides, rock and roll, drugs, and sex are great! They’ve probably never heard of Jesus, or are unclear on the concept of what a soul is. They view Christians (the true ones, at least) as fanatical bigots who are simply intolerant of other religions and lifestyles. The Damned have made sure that the entire world slowly falls to the forces of darkness. They’re the ones making Dark Dungeons popular, and funding rock festivals. They’re the ones sacrificing people to Satan on his birthday. They can exhort dark forces to curse those who cross them, and their covens have more sway than you’d think. Why, they’re teaching kids about gay “love” in elementary school, now! But if you just Drop-In, you may play a different role. You might not be the next Jesus, but unlike everybody else you start off free of the sin passed down since Adam and Eve. This gets you some leeway with the big man, and Satan doesn’t know what to think. Be wary of crossing either of these two great powers, however. They may be content to ignore you for now, but they’ve been fighting in a struggle for the souls of men since the Earth was created (about 7000 years ago). No matter what your role is, you’re going to be stuck here for a while. To help with that, have these Chick Points! +1000CP Location Roll 1d8 or pay 50CP to determine your staring location. 1) Anytown, America 5) Cult Lair A small town, with a few schools, a bar, and a couple of churches. Maybe you’re happy living in sin, and want to drag as many down with you as you can. Even if you killed a guy, overcrowding will mean you’re out in a few months, tops. 8) Free Pick No matter where you end up, I’m sure you’ll do just fine. Even if it’s not on the list! Backgrounds You can select any background, age, and gender for free. Drop-In You’re not from around here. That means you’re kind of a wildcard. You didn’t inherit any original sin, but that doesn’t mean Satan can’t get his claws into you. But that also means you probably have your own message to spread. Jumpers are typically iconoclasts, but maybe you’ll take up a more messianic role for a while. Saved Whether you were raised in a loving Christian family, or found Jesus later in life – you’ve heard the message, and have been saved. Now your eyes are open, and your mission in life is clear. All of these poor, deceived souls could be like you, basking in the light of God’s love. If only they had somebody to help them fight off the influence of Satan, maybe they won’t die in their sins. Deceived You’re just an average guy. You don’t see why those Bible-thumpers have to ruin a good time. You’ve dabbled in drugs, maybe a little bit of astrology or crime, but you’re not a bad person. Or maybe you are. But that doesn't mean there’s a lake of burning fire waiting for when you die. After all, nobody who really matters believes in God. And if there is a Hell, you’re sure it’s one big party where all your friends are waiting for you! And that’s if you’re lucky and death isn’t just a great big nonexistance. Right? Fallen You know there’s a Hell, and a Satan. Why else would you be up at midnight on Halloween sacrificing a black cat? Satan’s a cool dude! He’s gotten you fame, fortune, drugs, magic powers, and other neat stuff. What’s Jesus done for you lately? If your sulfurous boss wants you to make sure some weenie doesn’t get saved, that’s a small price to pay! You better not screw up, though. • Demons & Devils: the Moral Panic Surrounding Dungeons & Dragons
Demons & Devils: The Moral Panic Surrounding Dungeons & Dragons, 1979-1991 by Austin Wilson Submitted to the Department of History of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for departmental honors Approved by: David Farber, Thesis Coordinator Sheyda Jahanbani, Committee Member David Roediger, Committee Member Date Defended: 4/24/2019 1 On June 9, 1982 Irving “Bink” Pulling committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest. His distraught mother Patricia Pulling attempted to find out what had driven her son to such extreme measures. In her search for answers she laid the blame squarely on Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), in which Bink had been heavily involved. Patricia Pulling started the organization Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons (BADD) in 1983. BADD crusaded against roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons. As she would argue in many works that she subsequently published, including her 1989 manifesto, The Devil’s Web: Who is Stalking Your Children for Satan?, Dungeons & Dragons was a dangerous game that put the lives and moral virtues of youths at risk by serving as an entry point to the occult.1 This paper will argue that there was a moment of crisis centered around the family in the period and the broader discussion of youth entertainment which allowed for BADD to gain traction. By examining pamphlets produced by BADD and Patricia Pulling’s appearance on shows like 60 Minutes the dogma of the group can be understood. By juxtaposing other pieces of media that a parent may have seen in the same period such as the senate hearing for parental advisory labels on music and anti-drug PSAs this paper will illustrate the ways that people were primed by other panics of the period to believe that D&D could be dangerous.

  • Princeton Prayer Letters Street Evangelism
Princeton Prayer Letter, Princeton, NJ (Sept. 22, 2006) Friday Night in Princeton. One of the slowest nights we’ve seen in a long time in Princeton. Six people were present to witness/evangelize on 09/22/06. Elyse and Roberto – Two teens from Princeton area. Elyse took 2QT and flunked it. Then she admitted to breaking at least 3 of the 10C’s. When we discussed forgiveness being given by God, even after a life of sin, she balked. Thought that it was too easy for a murderer to get off the hook. She had trouble really accepting the idea of grace since she was from a R/C background. But she did not like the Catholic Church and had basically left it. But she still retained some of their “works” mentality. She took a Gospel of John and a More Than a Carpenter book with her. Roberto was very quiet and finally asked if he could worship Satan tonight and then tomorrow become Born Again, “could he do it”? I said “yes”, but that if he persisted in sin his heart would get harder and harder. He wanted to wait until later to get this “good deal” of forgiveness. I asked him when he would die, and he said probably in the next two weeks since he smoked ten packs a day. But he got my point that he has no idea of the time of his death. We gave him the Scripture that “now is the time of salvation,” and told him, “Don’t wait until it is too late.” Courtney and her friend stopped to speak with us.

  • The Visual Culture of Chick Tracts and Its Problems with Communication Philip Forness 7 August 2008
The Visual Culture of Chick Tracts and Its Problems with Communication Philip Forness 7 August 2008 2 I. Introduction In the 1960s, a group of comic artists began to differentiate their comic books from those that were prevalent in the first half of the twentieth century. Although many chroniclers of what came to be called the Underground Comics Movement have dated the beginnings of the movement to Robert Crumb’s Zap Comix in 1968 (Figure 1), it is readily admitted that there had been traces of the movement’s ideas before. In any case, from Crumb’s series the movement spread widely, notably including Harvey Kurtzmann of MAD Magazine, and later including Art Spiegelman, won the Pulitzer Prize for Maus. The earliest works in the movement display a deliberate disregard for taboos on portraying sexual scenes, exploring drug use, and challenging political assumptions (see Figure 2). Likewise, some artists of the movement used the comic book medium to satirize religion. Most notably, Frank Stack under the pseudonym Foolbert Sturgeon wrote The New Adventures of Jesus, a series of comics exploring how ridiculous it would be were Jesus in modern culture (see Figure 3). These themes attracted an adult crowd interested in defining themselves against the contemporary norm. While these comic artists were not the first to use comics for discourse among adults, their comics marked the first time that a widely-recognized, sustained subculture would emerge around adult-comics. Matthew Pustz observes that the comic artists’ willingness to portray drug use “worked to reinforce the community between the creators and their audience by emphasizing their shared experience.”1 Reveling in their otherness defined against the prim and proper façade of the 1960s, a family of collectors and creators formed around these comic books that would play a role in the progressive movements of the coming decades.

  • The Controversy Surrounding Bewitched and Harry Potter Natalie
Georgia Institute of Technology Which Witch? The Controversy Surrounding Bewitched and Harry Potter Natalie F. Turbiville Department of History, Technology, and Society Georgia Institute of Technology Undergraduate Thesis Friday, April 25, 2008 Advisor: Dr. Douglas Flamming Second Reader: Dr. August Giebelhaus 2 Abstract Beginning in 1999, J.K. Rowling began to receive criticism about her Harry Potter series, which was first published in 1997. Christian Fundamentalists in opposition to the books argued that occult themes present in the series were harmful to the spiritual development of children. Those in opposition cited the negative response to the popular TV series Bewitched during its initial airing in the 1960s as grounds for rejecting Harry Potter . This connection was made because the popular television series and the successful book series both contained witchcraft elements; however, this connection is false. Primary sources show that Bewitched was not challenged based on the issue of witchcraft during its initial airing in the 1960s and 1970s. Despite modern Christian fundamentalists’ claims, the modern negative response to Bewitched is built on contemporary reflection. When Christian fundamentalists seek to prove that their outcry against the witchcraft used in Harry Potter is not unique it is suggested that America had rejected a form of media based on witchcraft when the public spoke out against Bewitched in the 1960s. In fact, the claim that Bewitched received criticism during its initial airing is incorrect. My research shows a direct contemporary correlation between the protest to Harry Potter beginning in 1999 and the rejection of Bewitched by Christian fundamentalists based on the issue of witchcraft.

This dissertation examines the use of Gospel tracts in the construction of evangelical identity. Often overlooked as mere ephemera, tracts can be used as windows into the lived religious behavior of ordinary Evangelicals. While nominally tools of outreach, the efficacy of tract distribution is often called into question. However as artifacts of religious and cultural behavior, gospel tracts also shed light on the ways in which certain evangelical communities construct borders of identity between themselves, secular society and rival religious groups. Archival research was employed in the gathering of historical documents from tract literature databases. Contemporary material was obtained through excavation of online literature and found ephemera.
