    2013 SOFTBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM ANNOUNCED For Immediate Release New York, N.Y. – Sophomore Kristen Beikirch of Sage has been named the 2013 Skyline Softball Player of the Year in voting conducted among the Conference’s eight head coaches. The Skyline coaches also selected Alyssa Clancy of Old Westbury as Pitcher of the Year, Farmingdale State’s Meagan Anderson as Rookie of the Year and Jimmy Barrett of NYU-Poly as Coach of the Year. In addition, Purchase received the Team Sportsmanship Award. Beikirch leads the conference in batting average (.451), total bases (94), hits (60) and steals (15) while pacing the Gators with six home runs. Tabbed the Skyline Rookie of the Year in 2012, the second baseman from Brockport, N.Y., ranks third in the league in both slugging (.707) and on-base percentage (.468) and shares the team lead with 10 doubles. She earned Player of the Week honors on Apr. 8 and has registered 15 multi-hit performances on the year. Anderson ranks second in the Skyline in batting average (412), total bases (88), hits (56), runs scored (39) and doubles (14). A Patchogue, N.Y., native and four-time Rookie of the Week honoree, Anderson’s home run in the top of the seventh inning on Sunday snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted Farmingdale State to a 2-1 win over St. Joseph’s-L.I. and its third consecutive Skyline crown. The freshman catcher also garnered first-team All-Conference distinction. A two-time Pitcher of the Week selection, Clancy leads the Skyline in wins (16), innings (197.2), earned run average (1.84), strikeouts (167), complete games (28) and shutouts (seven).

    Grand Master's Message for November 2005 At this most pleasant time of year, we celebrate the recent harvest and give thanks for all of God's blessings. This year should be no different. We are truly blessed in so many ways. It was my pleasure to award two Grand Master's Meritorious Service Awards to Past Grand Commanders and their Grand Commanderies, which have met the requirements for that award. The first was to Sir Knight George A. Hulsinger of the Grand Commandery of Pennsylvania. Next, an award went to Sir Knight Eugene Wright of Oregon. Congratulations to both of them for their dedicated service and efforts on behalf of their Grand Commanderies. On a sad note, I regret the loss of Sir Knight William Q. Moore, Grand Prelate of the Grand Encampment, Knights Templar of the United States of America. Bill was a great friend and one of the finest Prelates I have heard speak. For quite a few years, I thought that he was a minister. In fact, he was an accountant. His delivery was so good that he fooled a number of us. Every time I heard him do the Prelate's part, he touched my heart. I have never met a kinder Sir Knight than Bill. We who were associated with him are richer for that association. He truly lived his Masonry, and we will miss him. You will find Sir Knight Moore's In Memoriam and biography on page 9 of this issue. We extend to the family of Sir Knight Moore our deepest sympathy.

The purpose of the draft is to assign amateur baseball players to major league teams. The draft order is determined based on the previous season's standings, with the team possessing the worst record receiving the first pick. Eligible amateur players include graduated high school players who have not attended college, any junior or community college players, and players at four-year colleges and universities three years after first enrolling or after their 21st birthdays (whichever occurs first). From 1966-1986, a January draft was held in addition to the June draft targeting high school players who graduated in the winter, junior college players, and players who had dropped out of four-year colleges and universities. To date, there have been 1,170 Maryland players selected in the First-Year Player Drafts either from a Maryland High School (337), Maryland College (458), Non-Maryland College (357), or a Maryland amateur baseball club (18). The most Maryland selections in a year was in 1970 (38) followed by 1984 (37) and 1983 (36). The first Maryland selection was Jim Spencer from Andover High School with the 11th overall selection in the inaugural 1965 June draft.

(Bay Shore HS) Farmingdale State College sophomore pitcher Hope Zino earned Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Year for the second straight year. Zino finished the season with a 13-6 record and a 2.20 ERA. In 108.1 innings of work, she gave up just 91 hits, struck out 129 and walked 41. Opponents hit just .221 against Zino. She also tossed a no- hitter against NYU-Poly in the championship round of the Skyline Conference tournament. Rookie of the Year SHELBY BRUNS • Polytechnic Institute of NYU Freshman • Shortstop • Elko, Nevada (Elko HS) Freshman shortstop Shelby Bruns, one of several impact freshmen for Polytechnic Institute of NYU, was selected as the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year. In 38 games, Bruns batted .467 (57-for-122) with 13 doubles, three triples, 32 runs batted in and 41 runs scored. She tied for the conference lead in stolen bases with 14 and also ranked third with a .528 on-base percentage.

    The Boston Red Sox Friday, April 3, 2020 * The Boston Globe Here are the best ballplayers I’ve covered, position by position Peter Abraham My first game as a beat writer was Aug. 6, 2002. The New York Mets played the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park and I was there working for the Journal News, a newspaper based in White Plains, N.Y. Two future Hall of Famers, Roberto Alomar and Mike Piazza, were in the lineup for the Mets that night. With Alomar on first base, Piazza homered off Ben Sheets in the top of the first inning and the Mets went on to win the game, 5-1. Looking up that box score led to this thought: Who are the best players I’ve covered in 18 years on the baseball beat? I had the Mets from 2002-05, the Yankees from 2006-09, and the Red Sox since 2010. For the purposes of this list, only players from those teams are eligible, and it’s based on how they played at the time I was covering the team. Here is my list: First base Mark Teixeira I covered one year of Mo Vaughn with the Mets when he was still good, and that was a lot of fun. But Teixeira had a .948 OPS for the Yankees in 2009 and finished second in the MVP voting for a World Series champion. He also won a Gold Glove. Mike Napoli had an outstanding 2013 season for the Sox. Adrian Gonzalez hit .321 with an .895 OPS in two seasons with the Sox.

Sponsorship of the game was obtained from Crown Central Petroleum Company. A spokesman for Crown at the time, Brooks Robinson, the Hall of Fame third baseman for the Orioles, became honorary chairman of the game. The first annual Crown High School All-Star game was played in 1982 at Memorial Stadium between teams of high school seniors representing the North and the South. Growing in stature every year, the venue for the game shifted to Oriole Park at Camden Yards when it opened in 1992. In 2004, when the game lost the sponsorship of Crown, Brooks Robinson, as he had done so many times for the Orioles with a sparkling defensive play at third, saved the game. He sought out Joe Geier, a longtime friend, baseball fan, and Mount St. Joseph graduate, and the Geier Financial Group agreed to sponsor the game. Fittingly, the game was renamed the Brooks Robinson Senior High School All-Star Game. The game is usually played on a Sunday after an Orioles’ game following the conclusion of State tournament play in late May.
