The purpose of the draft is to assign amateur baseball players to major league teams. The draft order is determined based on the previous season's standings, with the team possessing the worst record receiving the first pick. Eligible amateur players include graduated high school players who have not attended college, any junior or community college players, and players at four-year colleges and universities three years after first enrolling or after their 21st birthdays (whichever occurs first). From 1966-1986, a January draft was held in addition to the June draft targeting high school players who graduated in the winter, junior college players, and players who had dropped out of four-year colleges and universities. To date, there have been 1,170 Maryland players selected in the First-Year Player Drafts either from a Maryland High School (337), Maryland College (458), Non-Maryland College (357), or a Maryland amateur baseball club (18). The most Maryland selections in a year was in 1970 (38) followed by 1984 (37) and 1983 (36). The first Maryland selection was Jim Spencer from Andover High School with the 11th overall selection in the inaugural 1965 June draft. He is one of 83 Maryland drafted players who have played in the majors. Two of those, Cal Ripken, Jr. and Harold Baines, have been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Harold Baines, who was the first overall pick in the 1977 June draft out of St. Michaels High School, is also the highest Maryland selection. Each of the 30 current major league franchises have made Maryland selections with the Baltimore Orioles making the most, followed by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Texas Rangers/Washington Senators. The Maryland draft selections by team franchise are as follows: Angels – 41 Giants – 32 Rangers/Senators – 83 Astros – 32 Indians – 43 Rays – 8 Athletics – 22 Mariners – 31 Red Sox – 23 Blue Jays – 24 Marlins – 17 Reds – 31 Braves – 34 Mets – 35 Rockies – 5 Brewers – 69 Nationals/Expos – 49 Royals – 38 Cardinals – 34 Orioles – 192 Tigers – 32 Cubs – 30 Padres – 21 Twins – 36 Diamondbacks – 14 Phillies – 22 White Sox – 23 Dodgers – 30 Pirates – 85 Yankees – 34 Position wise, Maryland pitchers are the most frequently selected, followed by outfielders and shortstops regardless from where selected. Prior to the early-2021 end of his Orioles contract, Hunter had served as a play-by-play announcer for Orioles baseball games since 1997, working on both radio and TV broadcasts. The sportscaster earlier was with CBS Radio Sports from 1982 to 1996. He called the baseball “Game of the Week” for a decade and announced numerous postseason series games. Hunter was a studio announcer for CBS Radio during the 1992 and 1994 Olympic Winter Games, and also covered 12 Super Bowls as a host and reporter. Later, he covered college football and basketball for the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN). Hunter is an alumnus of St. John Vianney High School in Holmdel Township, New Jersey, where he was inducted into the school's athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. He then attended Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey, and was inducted into its athletics hall of fame in 2018.
