Great God of Heaven Daniel made simple SAM GORDON ‘With his typical warmth and wisdom, Sam Gordon peers through Daniel’s telescope of future events to show us the clarity of prophecy and, better yet, the glory of our Saviour. You’re left whispering under your breath, as the last page is turned, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus” … we can hardly wait.’ Dr Stephen Davey, Pastor/Teacher, Colonial Baptist Church, Cary NC President & Professor of Practical Theology, Shepherds Theological Seminary ‘The book of Daniel is the perfect blend of prophecy and piety. God shares truths about the “sweet by and by” to give his followers hope, while Daniel and his friends demonstrate the wisdom and faith needed to live for God through the “difficult here and now.” Properly interpreted, the book of Daniel helps the reader gain an understanding of God’s plan for the future while also learning how to stay faithful today. And in this practical commentary, Sam Gordon gives us that proper interpretation!’ Dr Charlie Dyer, Professor-at-Large of Bible, Moody Bible Institute Host of The Land and the Book radio program ‘On several occasions I have enjoyed hearing ministry from the book of Daniel by my brother and dear friend, Sam Gordon. A deep yearning of my heart has been to have this teaching in written form. This dream has come true in the pages of his book. I warmly commend it to you.’ David Logacho, Bible teacher throughout Latin America Former Director, La Biblia Dice, Quito, Ecuador ‘Many people love the book of Daniel, at least the first half. Great stories. Easy to understand. But they skip the second half of the book because it is prophetic and much more difficult to understand. However, Sam Gordon has a unique way of making understandable what many find puzzling. With his help, you’ll enjoy all twelve chapters in Daniel.’ Dr Woodrow Kroll, President & Senior Bible Teacher (retired) BacK to the Bible radio ‘What Sam Gordon has done in expounding, exposing, and explaining the message of the book of Daniel in his classic witty and winsome way is nothing short of remarkable. Sam takes one of the most technically challenging books of the Bible and unveils the majesty and supremacy of God in a way that is befitting to both schoolboy and scholar alike. This is an extremely practical, prophetic, and profound guide for living as exiles in our own Babylon today.’ Wayne Sutton, Senior Pastor Carrubbers Christian Centre, Royal Mile, Edinburgh 2 ‘Like he has done in his ministry over the years, Sam Gordon uses his God-given gift of driving the truths of Scripture home beautifully. In the pages of this book, we get to experience God and his workings through lives that are courageously committed to him in a simple, easy-read style, with great depth. This book will admonish, build, and challenge you!’ Dr Bernice Gatere Director, Trans World Radio, Kenya ‘Sam Gordon has done a wonderful job expounding the book of Daniel. He does it in a simplified way thus enabling both lay church members and trained theologians to grasp its timely message. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is seeking to better understand or teach God’s Word.’ Rev Connex Saulosi Ijalasi Former General Secretary of Zambezi Evangelical Church Founder & Director, J-Life Ministries (Malawi) ‘Sam Gordon really brings history alive, which delights me as it was the only subject at which I excelled at school. The book is beautifully written – lively, most intriguing, with liberal use of helpful modern idioms. Most amazing of all, he brings to light the unerring hand of God in history, showing how Daniel’s prophecies have been fulfilled to the letter, thus declaring the awesome majesty and uniqueness of the God of Israel.’ Charles Gardner South African-born journalist and author ‘If you’ve ever longed for a trusted friend to sit beside you and guide you as you read and study the Bible, Sam Gordon is your man. In his characteristically warm and engaging style, Sam unlocks the truths of Scripture. The book of Daniel has inspiring historical narrative and powerful prophetic portions. Like the experienced and trustworthy expositor he is, Sam skilfully guides us through its wonders, while always exalting our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ.’ Gregg Harris President & CEO, Thru the Bible ‘Sam Gordon accomplishes something special for he helps make the book of Daniel a discipleship manual for daily living. This commentary is a joy to read, and more important, you’ll want to come back to it again and again because it speaks so creatively and insightfully into our personal lives and the times in which we are living, all the while drawing you to the great God of heaven.’ Sam Ngugi Founder & Director, Mission Campaign NetworK (MCN), Kenya 3 ‘In this lovely book, Sam Gordon makes the crooked paths straight, and in his usual compelling way, he explains the more difficult passages in a manner easily understood. Any serious Bible student, and anyone with a keen interest in prophecy, will benefit greatly from this exposition. It becomes a cherished commentary in my library, as it will be in yours.’ Alan Parks Bible Teacher & Gospel Singer, Myrtle Beach, SC ‘The complexity of the book of Daniel often deters many believers from accessing the whole counsel of God. Sam Gordon has bridged that gap as he weaves modern imagery with biblical truths thus enabling the Bible student to absorb and understand the mind of God for these end times. This book is a masterpiece that needs to be translated into other languages.’ Rev Patrick Semphere General Secretary, Word Alive Ministries Intl., Malawi Chairperson, Malawi Human Rights Commission ‘When I began reading Sam Gordon’s book my plan was to skim it fairly Quickly, but then I was captivated by the constant reminders of the greatness of God. I’ve never read a commentary with so many footnotes to other scholars and yet so readable and eminently related to our situation today. Thank you, Sam, for reminding me that sound Bible teaching is powerfully practical.’ Dr James E Plueddemann Retired SIM International Director Retired Professor at Wheaton College (IL) and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, IL 4 GREAT GOD OF HEAVEN © 2020 Sam Gordon All Scripture quotations, unless indicated, are taKen from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV), copyright © 2001 by Crossway Bibles, a division of Good News Publishers. Everything stopped. Non-essential shops closed. Flights were cancelled. Schools and universities shut down. Churches and other religious buildings bolted their front doors. Life as we knew it ground to a screeching halt. New words and phrases popped up all over the place. And so the list goes on, and on. Gospel work flourished as Bible churches maximised modern technology with sanctified creativity so that weary believers could share together online. Moving forward, we should value and appreciate the joy of warm Christian fellowship when we meet as a gathered company of God’s people. There are some things in life we must never again take for granted. For me, a peripatetic Bible teacher, what was I going to do during these months when I could no longer travel here and there to preach the Word of God? Aside from online ministry (which was a great privilege), my publisher had already asked me to write another commentary. So, after fifteen weeks holed up in my study, the book you now have in your hand is my lockdown legacy. May God bless and encourage you as you read it from cover to cover. I am deeply indebted to a number of folks who have added so much to this exciting project: to all those wonderful friends from near and far who have endorsed the book, my warmest gratitude … to Dr Julie and Dr Liron whose medical expertise was most helpful in relation to Nebuchadnezzar’s experience, a big thank you … to Peter and Patty whose godly insights and editorial comments on every chapter have made a significant difference to the finished manuscript, my heartfelt appreciation … to my wife Lois for granting me leave of absence for almost four months, I am massively grateful … last but not least, to the sovereign Lord, the real hero of the book of Daniel, to him be all the praise and glory forever and ever.
