  • Charles Villiers Stanford's Experiences with and Contributions
Charles Villiers Stanford’s Experiences with and contributions to the solo piano repertoire Adèle Commins Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) has long been considered as one of the leaders of the English Musical Renaissance on account of his work as composer, conductor and pedagogue. In his earlier years he rose to fame as a piano soloist, having been introduced to the instrument at a very young age. It is no surprise then that his first attempts at composition included a march for piano in i860.1 The piano continued to play an important role in Stanford’s compositional career and his last piano work, Three Fancies, is dated 1923. With over thirty works for the instrument, not counting his piano duets, Stanford’s piano pieces can be broadly placed in three categories: (i) piano miniatures or character pieces which are in the tradition of salon or domestic music; (ii) works which have a pedagogical function; and (iii) works which are written in a more virtuosic vein. In each of these categories many of the works remain unpublished. In most cases the piano scores are not available for purchase and this has hindered performances after his death.2 The repertoire of pianists should not be limited to the music of European composers and publishers, like performers, are responsible for the exposure a composer’s works receives. New editions of Stanford’s piano music need to be created and published in order to raise awareness of the richness of Stanford’s contribution to piano literature. While there has been renewed interest in the composer’s life and music by musicologists and performers — primarily initiated by the recent Stanford biographies in 2002 by Dibble and Rodmell — the 1 Originally termed Opus 1 in Stanford’s sketch book it was reproduced in Anon., ‘Charles Villiers Stanford’, The Musical Times and Singing Class Circular, 39 670 (1898), 785-793 (p.

  • Editing the Diaries of F.S. Kelly: Unique Insights Into an Expatriate's Hiusical Career
Editing the Diaries of F.S. Kelly: Unique Insights into an Expatriate's hiusical Career Th&kse Radic The National Library of Australia houses eight volumes of the diaries of composer-pianist Frederick Septimus Kelly, (1881-1916) purchased from an English book dealer in 1979. For twenty years these have remained virtually unread. In 1999 The National Library of Australia (NLA) commissioned me to select and edit extracts from these diaries'and to prepare an extended introduction to them for publication in 2001.2 There are some 2,600 pages in the uncut original manuscript. What these voluminous writings offer, among other things, is a unique insight into the way an expatriate musical career was built within the wider context of musical and social institutions at a crucial time in the regeneration of British music. What they reveal is valuable talent typically lost to Australia through the general assumption that such talent was best sent to develop elsewhere. The 1979 offer of sale included a description of Kelly, using a quote from the then current edition of the British Dictionary of National Biography. This claimed him to be 'one of the most promising English musicians of his day ... and one of the greatest scullers of all time! In fact Frederick Septimus Kelly, DSC, an Olympic gold medallist, was an Australian. He was born at 47 Phillip Street, Sydney on 29 May 1881; to an Irish business and mining magnate, Thomas Hussey Kelly (arrived 1860), and his Australian-born wife Mary Anne n6e The diaries of Fnxleridc Septimus Kelly, pianist, composer, oarsman, and naval officer, were acquired from the antiquarianbookselling and dealing firm of Henry Bristow Ltd.

  • Reconstructing Clara Schumann's Pedagogy
RECONSTRUCTING CLARA SCHUMANN’S PEDAGOGY: ILLUMINATION THROUGH UNDERSTANDING A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Musical Arts by Shin Hwang August 2020 © 2020 Shin Hwang RECONSTRUCTING CLARA SCHUMANN’S PEDAGOGY: ILLUMINATION THROUGH UNDERSTANDING Shin Hwang, D.M.A. Cornell University 2020 ABSTRACT Although Clara Schumann did not write a pedagogical manifesto of any sort, the collective accounts of her students and colleagues capture a colorful collage of her pedagogy and pianism. In this dissertation, I use these accounts to reconstruct the foundations of Clara Schumann’s school of piano playing. I rely heavily on recorded evidence to demonstrate how the praxis of Clara’s students reflect and reveal the written accounts of her teaching. This study discloses a pedagogy of musical asceticism that demands the highest level of conscientiousness and self- denial. Throughout the process of observing, interpreting, and performing the musical notation, Clara Schumann required her students to justify their musical decisions with reason rather than mere “feeling.” Clara’s pedagogy, in short, asserts that understanding is key to accessing musical truth; in other words, illumination is gained by reason. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Shin Hwang, a prize-winner of the 1st International Westfield Fortepiano Competition, is a versatile keyboardist who has won recognition in both modern and historical performance. After completing his Masters degree at the University of Michigan with Penelope Crawford and Arthur Greene, he received the Fulbright Grant to study in the Netherlands at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague with Bart van Oort and Jacques Ogg.

KIJAS छ INTRODUCTION Teresa Carreño (1853–1917), Venezuelan pianist and composer, is often most remembered in reference works and literature as Edward MacDowell’s (1860–1908) early piano teacher, and more importantly as an early promoter of his piano music. Carreño’s early biographer, Marta Milinowski, placed great emphasis on her interaction with the MacDowell family, especially his mother Frances “Fanny” MacDowell, as well as Carreño’s performances of MacDowell’s compositions in the United States and abroad.1 Although her interaction and relationship with Edward and his mother is well established, the majority of corre- spondence between Carreño and the MacDowell family, as well as other prominent musicians or figures, remains under-analyzed and unpub- lished. This neglect can be attributed partly to the geographical disper- sion of the Carreño collection following its donation to Vassar College in 1931, the location of primary sources in inaccessible archival or private collections, as well as the general character of Carreño scholarship.2 Anna E.

  • I. Clara Wieck Családja: Az Apa, Friedrich Wieck Szerepe
    I. Clara Wieck családja: az apa, Friedrich Wieck szerepe 1819. szeptember 13-án születtem Lipcsében a „Zur hohen Lilie” házban az új Neumarkt-on, ahova Húsvétkor költöztek a szüleim 1818-ban, és nekem a Clara Josephine nevet adták. A keresztszüleim apám barátja, a közjegyző Streubel; anyám barátnője Madame Reichel; továbbá a plaueni nagymamám Cantorin Tromlitz. Friedrich Wieck ezen írások segítségével is nevelte, tanította lányát. Viszont óriási ambícióval bíró fiatalemberként szinte autodidakta módon képezte magát a zenei pályán. Wieck Torgauban folytatott tanulmányévei alatt ismerkedett meg Klint orgonistával, aki látva lelkesedését a zeneszerzés iránt, bevezette őt a zeneelmélet tudományába. Klint egy kedves barátja, Oberförster házában a híres zongoratanár Milchmeyer adott órákat, melyeken a barát jóvoltából Wieck is részt vehetett. Milchmeyer látva a fiatal Wieck buzgóságát, lelkesedését és szorgalmát, szánt rá is néhány órát. ____________________________________________________________________ 2 Berthold Litzmann, ed. Clara Schumann: Ein Künstlerleben nach Tagebüchern und Briefen (Leipzig: Breitkopf&Härtel, 1910), 1. 1 Ez a mintegy fél tucat zongoraóra rendkívüli hatékonysággal bírt. Wieck kapott néhány alapvető fontosságú instrukciót a helyes zongorajátékhoz. Ő maga is bevallotta, hogy a Milchmeyer óráin tanultak, illetve azok továbbfejlesztésével kidolgozott saját módszerei nagyban hozzásegítették, hogy Németország egyik legjobb tanárává váljon.

  • Brahms, Robert Keller, and the Train Over the Brünig Pass
Volume XXXII, Number 2 Fall 2014 Brahms, Robert Keller, and the Train over the Brünig Pass The relationship between Brahms and Robert Keller, editor for Simrock, is traced in detail by George Bozarth in his 1996 study, The Brahms-Keller Correspondence.1 His account of Brahms’s 1888 visit to Keller in Weesen, Switzerland, suggests a warming of the formal relationship between the composer and his valued proofreader.2 Two years earlier an invitation from Keller was not taken up by Brahms, despite the attractions of “an especially charming area, where also grows a rather good grape,” the presence of “a bevy of lovely ladies, above all our charming landlady,” and a promise that “we will treat you entirely like one of us and will not let you feel your superiority at all!”3 Keller’s second attempt to lure Brahms to Weesen was, however, successful. Keller to Brahms. Berlin, 23 April 1887 [corrected in purple ink to:] 1888: Recently I heard your songs (the most serious ones!) sung by a young lady, Fräulein Köckert from Geneva, as I never heard them before. She is a born Brahms singer. A shudder runs up and down your spine when she sings Der Tod, das ist die kühle Nacht [Op. 96 No. 1] or Ach, wende diesen Blick [Op. 57 No. 4]. You must hear her!
