She studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music with David Lee (1992-2000) obtaining the teaching diplomas of A.R.I.A.M., L.R.I.A.M. and L.T.C.L. An examiner for the RIAM, she held the post of Senior Examiner from 2002-2004. Eileen is Director of Castleknock School of Music and has lectured in music education at St. Patrick’s College since 2002. She delivered a paper at the SMI conference (2008) and is in her third year of research focusing on subjective identity in the operas of James Wilson. Cathy Byrne, a postgraduate music student, was awarded a first class honours degree in music at NUI Maynooth in 2006, having previously graduated in arts from TCD (1993) and worked in the interim on Irish archaeological sites. Cathy is now completing her MLitt thesis on Béla Bartôk’s late orchestral compositions, and also performs and teaches piano. Brian Carty is a PhD student at NUI Maynooth, researching the area of binaural and spatial audio. His publications include a recent paper entitled ‘New Csound Opcodes for Binaural Processing’ at the Linux Audio Conference in Berlin in 2008. An IRCSET and John Hume scholar, Brian also lectures in the Music and Computer Science Departments at NUI Maynooth. Brian holds a first class BA and MA, in Music and Maths and Computer Music respectively. Brian is also a keen musician and emerging composer. Adèle Commins holds a first class honours degree in Music and Irish and a first class honours Higher Diploma in Education from NUI Maynooth. Her current PhD research concerns reception issues and the solo piano music of Irish-born composer Charles Villiers Stanford. At present she lectures in the Department of Music and Creative Media at Dundalk Institute of Technology in the areas of education, performance and musicology. She has presented papers at various musicological v conferences and she is a member of the RILM Ireland committee as well as having contributed articles to the forthcoming publication, EMIR. Eoin Conway is a second year MLitt student. He graduated from NUI Maynooth with a BMus in 2007. His research interests lie in the Minimalist and post-Minimalist composers (John Adams, Steve Reich, Arvo Part and Philip Glass), and in historically-informed performance of early choral music. He is a founding member of the Maynooth Early Music Ensemble, and a countertenor in the Palestrina Choir. He is a contributor to the Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland. Adam Cullen graduated from NUI Maynooth in 2006 with a first class honours Bachelor of Music degree specialising in composition. Since graduation he has tutored in the university in harmony, counterpoint, and dissertation writing. Adam has studied Classical Guitar with Alan Grundy, sang with the Maynooth Chamber Choir since 2005, and is Musical Director for the Millicent Singers. He is currently in the final year of his MLitt, supervised by Dr Lorraine Byrne Bodley, examining the relationship between certain late instrumental works by Schubert. Paul Higgins is in the final year of his PhD at NUI Maynooth researching the areas of historical and analytical musicology. The working title of his thesis is ‘Text-setting within musical texture - the art songs of Benjamin Britten (1913-1976)’. Paul graduated with a BMus degree (first class honours) from NUI Maynooth (2005) during which time his interests included the English Baroque and the nineteenth-century German Lied. He delivered papers at SMI conferences (2006 to 2008) and at the Britten Study Conference hosted by the University of East Anglia (April 2008). He was a contributor and an inaugural editor of Maynooth Musicology I. Joe Kehoe retired from the public service in 2004. He graduated from NUI Maynooth with an honours Bachelor of Music Degree in 2007, and he also holds an honours degree in philosophy from London University. He was the winner in-2008 of the first CHMHE Undergraduate Musicology Competition for his final year dissertation The Place of Ethics in Musicology, and on this basis was invited to present a paper to the 2008 Conference, in Waterford, of the Society for Musicology in Ireland. Joe has tutored students in musicology in NUI Maynooth and is currently an M. Litt. student there. Philip Kelly commenced studies in NUI Maynooth in 2005 in the BMus degree programme and graduated in 2008. While studying, Philip participated in the NUI Maynooth Guitar Orchestra and in other ensembles within the college including Brian Bridges’s Electric Guitar Array. He has played both classical and electric guitar for a number of years and is currently studying for a licentiate with Trinity College of Music London in electric guitar performance. Philip’s research interests include areas of popular musicology, ethnomusicology and music technology. He is currently enrolled in the MA in Computer Music at NUI Maynooth. Aisling Kenny was awarded a John Hume Scholarship in 2005 after completing her BMus at NUI Maynooth. She is currently pursuing doctoral research on the Lieder of Josephine Lang. She has presented papers at conferences in Ireland and the UK. She has written several articles on Irish singers for The Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland. Her paper on Josephine Lang’s Goethe settings was published in the NUI Maynooth Musicology Journal in 2008. Aisling, a Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholar of the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, also holds performance diplomas in piano and singing. Jennifer Lee graduated with an honours BMus degree from NUI Maynooth in 2006 specializing in original composition. Jennifer’s postgraduate studies on the philosophical connotations of Mahler’s Symphony no. 3 have been recently upgraded to doctorate level. She was awarded the Professional Certificate of Higher Level Teaching from NUI Maynooth in 2007 and teaches violin and music theory part-time in several schools in Dublin. Pat O’Connell holds an MA in Anglo Irish Studies from University College, Dublin. After a career of thirty-five years in the Information Technology and Telecommunications industries, he was accepted as a postgraduate student in the Department of Music at NUI Maynooth. His PhD research concerns the music and musicians of the Irish militias at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries. He has presented papers at a number of conferences and is a contributor to the forthcoming publication, EMIR. Jennifer O’Connor has a degree in Music and English and an MA in Music History from NUI Maynooth. She is completing her PhD which focuses on the contribution of women to music in nineteenth century Dublin. She has spoken at several conferences both in Ireland and the U.K. and is a contributor to the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Music in Ireland. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

    Benjamin Britten: art song, a synthesis of words and music — issues and approaches to text-setting Paul Higgins The clarity of verbal expression evident throughout Benjamin Britten’s (1913-1976) art songs serves to highlight the central role which the setting of pre-existing written poetic texts occupies in his compositional process and in the aesthetic appreciation of his interpretation. For Britten, text acts initially as a source of musical imagination, but it also provides the composer with a framework with which to express musically his selected, literary-based ideas. To place Britten’s contribution against the backdrop of an important musicological debate, it is necessary to clarify a number of key issues. Firstly, text-setting is often loosely perceived as the composition of music of a pre-existing written text, yet in Britten this approach has been expanded to incorporate the process whereby music and text are simultaneously generated. A good example of this is Britten’s close collaboration with W.H. Auden in the song cycle Our Hunting Fathers op.8 (1936),1 in which Auden not only wrote two poems but also selected and modernised three other poems, specifically for Britten to set to music. Secondly, that text-setting is a broader concern than the activity of mere text underlay and is significant to all text-based vocal music: its study also involves syntactic and semantic considerations. Syntactic concerns make reference to the musical response of the work to the structure of the source text, at both the level of overall form, and sentence and word patterns.

    Charles Villiers Stanford’s Experiences with and contributions to the solo piano repertoire Adèle Commins Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) has long been considered as one of the leaders of the English Musical Renaissance on account of his work as composer, conductor and pedagogue. In his earlier years he rose to fame as a piano soloist, having been introduced to the instrument at a very young age. It is no surprise then that his first attempts at composition included a march for piano in i860.1 The piano continued to play an important role in Stanford’s compositional career and his last piano work, Three Fancies, is dated 1923. With over thirty works for the instrument, not counting his piano duets, Stanford’s piano pieces can be broadly placed in three categories: (i) piano miniatures or character pieces which are in the tradition of salon or domestic music; (ii) works which have a pedagogical function; and (iii) works which are written in a more virtuosic vein. In each of these categories many of the works remain unpublished. In most cases the piano scores are not available for purchase and this has hindered performances after his death.2 The repertoire of pianists should not be limited to the music of European composers and publishers, like performers, are responsible for the exposure a composer’s works receives. New editions of Stanford’s piano music need to be created and published in order to raise awareness of the richness of Stanford’s contribution to piano literature.
