Discours De Frédéric Mitterrand, Ministre De La Culture Et De La Discours Communication, Prononcé À L'occasion De L'hommage À Euzhan Palcy Discours de Frédéric Mitterrand, ministre de la Culture et de la Discours Communication, prononcé à l'occasion de l'hommage à Euzhan Palcy Cannes, samedi 14 mai 2011 Chère Euzhan Palcy, Votre vie de cinéaste et d’artiste s’est nourrie de rencontres exceptionnelles, de celles qui donnent une force et un goût si singulier à la vie, de celles qui créent ces « amitiés fondamentales », que vous portez à l’écran en proposant une extraordinaire dialogue Césaire/Senghor. Aimé Césaire précisément, le grand poète du Cahier d’un retour au pays natal, cette « Voix pour l’histoire » pour reprendre vos propres mots, auquel la République a rendu hommage il y a quelques semaines, vous a donné l'envie de porter les cultures noires à l’écran. D’autres figures vous ont éveillé aux mille facettes de l’univers du cinéma : François Truffaut, bien Contact presse sûr, mais aussi Ousmane Sembene, Fritz Lang, Billy Wilder, Orson Welles, Département de l’information et de Hitchcock. Ce sont eux qui ont fait de vous la cinéaste reconnue et la communication distinguée par les plus grands festivals – de la Mostra de Venise au 01 40 15 74 71 Festival Panafricain du Cinéma de Ouagadougou (FESPACO), sans [email protected] oublier le prix Orson Welles (1987) -, la première réalisatrice noire à être produite par un grand studio de Hollywood, la première réalisatrice à avoir SEUL LE PRONONCE FAIT FOI dirigé le mythe Marlon Brando dans Une saison blanche et sèche (1989), impressionné qu’il fut par votre engagement et votre ténacité dans la lutte pour les droits civiques. Alors que vous n’avez que 24 ans, votre premier film Rue Cases-Nègres www.culture.gouv.fr est couronné de succès, avec dix-sept prix internationaux. Vous obtenez alors le Lion d’Argent à Venise, le César de la Meilleure première œuvre en 1984 et le Prix du public au FESPACO en 1985. Dans la Martinique des années 30, vous brossez une chronique puissante et réaliste, dans la grande tradition des films d’époque, où le sacrifice d’une grand-mère côtoie l’apprentissage des plus jeunes. « Tout l’espoir n’est pas de trop pour regarder le siècle en face », écrivait Césaire dans sa présentation du premier numéro de Tropiques en 1941, qu’il fonde avec sa femme Suzanne. Regardez le siècle en face, c’est ce qui vous a conduit à rencontrer et filmer le combattant des libertés et des droits que fut Nelson Mandela en 1995. Regarder le monde en face, c’est ce que vous avez fait en 2001 lorsque vous avez filmé la mutinerie de la prison d’Attica et sur sa répression (The Killing yard). Regarder le passé en face, c’est ce qui vous a amené à réaliser Parcours de dissidents, ce documentaire rare qui lève le voile sur un pan de l’histoire occulté : la contribution des jeunes Antillais à la défense de la France dans la seconde guerre mondiale, aux côtés des forces du général de Gaulle. Le film est d’ailleurs projeté à diverses occasions, notamment en 2010, à l’occasion du 70e anniversaire de l’appel du 18 juin. En 2007, le téléfilm que vous réalisez sur le peuplement de l’île de la Réunion, Les Mariées de l’île Bourbon, s’inscrit dans cette même exigence : porter à l’écran l’histoire noire trop longtemps reléguée dans l’oubli, à l’image de cette petite fille noire de 5 ans confrontée aux barrières de la discrimination dans l’Amérique des années 60 (Ruby bridges, 1999), à l’image de cette Bessie Coleman, première aviatrice noire américaine. 1 Tous vos films s'inscrivent dans cette double dimension, au point de rencontre entre la mémoire et les luttes du présent, au point de rencontre entre l’histoire du peuple noir et la lutte, toujours actuelle et sans cesse recommencée, contre les discriminations et les violences raciales. L’hommage spécial qui vous est rendu aujourd’hui par le Festival de Cannes, de même que la rétrospective qui vous sera consacrée au MOMA de New York puis à Pékin en fin d’année traduisent l’admiration que vous suscitez dans de très nombreux pays, Ils révèlent aussi votre rayonnement et votre place dans le cinéma contemporain, couronnés par de très nombreux prix et de très nombreuses reconnaissances, marqués par votre engagement en faveur de la transmission et de la formation des jeunes regards mais aussi des consciences de demain, vous qui avez été, en 2009, la marraine des 20 ans de l’opération « Ecole, collège, lycée au cinéma ». Vous traduisez dans votre regard l’idée chère à Edouard Glissant d’une créolisation du monde qui balaie les « identités-racines » au profit des « identités-relations », d’une créolisation qui appelle « la rencontre, l’interférence, le choc, les harmonies et les disharmonies entre les cultures », pour reprendre ses propres mots dans le Traité du Tout-Monde (1997). Cette idée je la fais mienne, à travers l’engagement du Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication dans le cadre de l’année des Outre mer 2011, mais aussi dans l’idée que je porte d’un modèle culturel respectueux des différences, garantissant l’expression de toutes les cultures à l’âge de la numérisation et du divertissement globalisé. C'est pourquoi, chère Euzhan Palcy, je tenais ce soir à vous rendre hommage, à vous exprimer ma profonde admiration pour votre carrière. Je tenais aussi à vous exprimer ma gratitude pour l’engagement qui est le vôtre afin que le cinéma, ce « miroir du monde », soit aussi un outil pour changer le monde. « Nous sommes ceux qui disent non à l’ombre », écrit Césaire dans Tropiques. Par vos films et vos réalisations, vous posez une lumière sur le monde et sur son histoire. 2.

I examine the aesthetic, political, social and economic strategies utilized by these filmmakers to reinsert themselves into recorded versions of history, and/or to intervene in racist, (neo)colonial and/or patriarchal systems of oppression. 2 CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION Purpose and Scope of the Dissertation This dissertation examines the aesthetic, political, social and economic strategies utilized by selected Afro-Caribbean women filmmakers in exploiting the media of film and video to reinsert themselves into recorded versions of history, to challenge their (mis)representations, and/or to intervene in racist, (neo)colonial and/or patriarchal systems of oppression.1 I offer what I have termed a “pan-African feminist” analytical framework2 as a methodological tool to examine the manner in which these Afro- Caribbean women filmmakers have negotiated, individually as well as collectively, the gender/race/class constraints within each of their societies in order to obtain access to the media of film and video, to adopt culturally relevant communication strategies and themes, and to pursue their goals of social transformation and cultural empowerment.

Representing South Africa: Apartheid from Print to Film Abstract The article presents information on apartheid in South African motion pictures. "Cry Freedom," "A World Apart," "A Dry White Season" -- three major films on South Africa eleasedr within two years of each other -- share two striking facts. In each a black man is arrested, detained, tortured, and killed by South African police; and in each the focus is on apartheid's impact on its central white character. The three films under discussion doubly refine South Africa, as they are based on texts that span the range of print media: Donald Woods' autobiographical, journalistic, book "Biko," Shawn Slovo's semi-autobiographical screenplay, "A World Apart," and André Brink's straightforward fictional novel, "A Dry White Season." Each author writes from memories of living in South Africa, drawing upon the authority of having been there, having felt apartheid at work.
