KUFS was founded as Kyoto Foreign Language School in May 1947, shortly after the end of World War II when demand was high for world peace and for the international understanding needed to achieve it. There was therefore an urgent need for schools able to produce graduates who had mastered the foreign languages needed to promote this international understanding, and had become knowledgeable in international culture, economics and society. But stymied by the unique structure of the Japanese language and by traditions and habits originating from the characteristics of Japan’s history, the Japanese find foreign language acquisition a perennial challenge. For the island-nation dwelling Japanese, mastering a single foreign language involves a degree of difficulty inconceivable to language learners in less isolated countries. Japanese foreign language learners need talent coupled with a firm resolve and constant effort. The University’s founders were eager to play a role in achieving world peace, as expressed in our founding philosophy, PAX MUNDI PER LINGUAS (‘World Peace through Languages’). Resolute tenacity has been our core approach to education and research since our founding, reflecting our understanding that constant effort is the most important quality a foreign language student needs.

本学が京都外国語学校として創立された1947年（昭和22年）５月、終戦後間もないこの当時に何よりも求められたものは世 界の平和であり、その基盤としての国際的理解でした。そして、この国際的理解を図るための外国語をマスターし、その文 化・経済・社会に熟知した人材の育成は急務でした。 しかし、我々日本人が外国語を身につけることは、日本語の独特な構造が一種の妨げとなり、更には我が国特有の歴史に由来 する伝統と習慣とがいよいよ外国語の修得を容易でないものにしています。つまり、島国に住む我々が一つの外国語をマス ターするには、国境を接する国と国との間における外国語修得とは比較にならない困難さを伴うわけで、これに必要なもの は、才能にもまして強固な意志と不断の努力であると言えます。 本学の建学の精神である“PAX MUNDI PER LINGUAS”（言語を通して世界の平和を）とは、世界平和達成への創立者の強い願 いが込められており、創立以来、「不撓不屈」を教育・研究の基本精神としているのは、外国語を専攻する者にとって不断の努力 が何よりも重要だからです。

The University’s philosophy is to promote peace among nations by producing leaders who can guide the next generation by drawing on a wealth of‘human capital’. This human capital is a quality KUFS seeks to instill in students. It is an all- encompassing ability that lets graduates be aware of their responsibilities as global inhabitants and live an energized life as highly educated individuals of value.

◆ Faculty of Global Engagement The Faculty of Global Engagement aims to produce graduates who can help promote world peace by providing them with advanced foreign language skills, the informed judgement that befits an international lifestyle, and the ability to make decisions and take actions based on a broad perspective and long-term insight. To bring these aims to life, our educational goals are for students to acquire the abilities below. We want to produce graduates who can approach events taking place around the world from a perspective that transcends the confines of their own people and nation. APUCEN (Asia-Pacific University-Community Engagement Network) ／ APUCEN（アプセン：アジア太平洋大学－地域連携ネットワーク） Our university is a member of APUCEN (Asia-Pacific University-Community Engagement Network). APUCEN is a regional network of academic institutions of higher learning with the aim of promoting cooperation between universities and local communities. 93 universities and organizations in Southeast Asia and Oceania affiliate with APUCEN. APUCEN has been progressing aggressively through exchanges. Our university is a COUNCIL MEMBER (Vice-President) from 2017 to 2020. ◆Learning Environment 学修環境 Multilingual Education in 20 Languages, Simultaneously Learning Two-Language ／ 20言語を学べるマルチリンガル教育と2言語同時学習 In addition to majoring in a foreign language, Kyoto Gaidai students have the opportunity to take second and third foreign language courses, according to their interests. We also offer programs which feature simultaneous learning in two languages. Students can study English along with another foreign language. We have develped a multilingual education program unique to Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. 専攻語以外の外国語も幅広く学べるように、第２外国語科目と第３外国語科目を設けており、興味や関心に応じて多様な言語を学べます。 また、英語ともう１言語を同時に学ぶ２言語同時学習などのプログラムを用意し、京都外大独自のマルチリンガル教育を展開しています。

▶We have in place programs for students to study to qualify as teachers, librarians, school librarian-teachers, and museum curators. In the teaching program, becaue of our having eight language departments, multiple teacher certificates can be acquired. We also offer a program to acquire elementary teacher certification through correspondence education. 教員免許や図書館司書・学校図書館司書教諭、博物館学芸員などの資格取得をめざす課程を設けています。教職課程では、8言語の学科を有 する特色を活かし、複数の教員免許の取得が可能です。また、通信教育を活用して小学校教諭免許を取得するプログラムもあります。

▶KUFS takes part in a number of collaborative projects.
