There was therefore an urgent need for schools able to produce graduates who had mastered the foreign languages needed to promote this international understanding, and had become knowledgeable in international culture, economics and society. But stymied by the unique structure of the Japanese language and by traditions and habits originating from the characteristics of Japan’s history, the Japanese find foreign language acquisition a perennial challenge. For the island-nation dwelling Japanese, mastering a single foreign language involves a degree of difficulty inconceivable to language learners in less isolated countries. Japanese foreign language learners need talent coupled with a firm resolve and constant effort. The University’s founders were eager to play a role in achieving world peace, as expressed in our founding philosophy, PAX MUNDI PER LINGUAS (‘World Peace through Languages’). Resolute tenacity has been our core approach to education and research since our founding, reflecting our understanding that constant effort is the most important quality a foreign language student needs.
