It seems like just yesterday that the founding team was meeting and discussing Fantastic Fest as a vague notion that we would like to someday cobble together. We're now fairly well rooted in the festival world, but I hope to think that we are far from grown-up. We want to always be known as the festival that understands and caters to the inner twelve-year-old inside all of us. We hope that from September 24 through October 1, you let that little kid out and let him play in our decidedly unsafe playhouse. Karrie and I have been travelling the globe for the last eleven months scouring every international festival and market we could find looking for the very best and the very strangest films from all corners of the planet. Our season starts in November with the American Film Market in Los Angeles. We then head to Berlin for the European Film Market and to Cannes for the grand-daddy of all markets. We've visited the New York Asian Film Festival, Fantasia in Montreal and UK Frightfest in London, always on the prowl for the best nuggets to bring back to Austin in September. Meanwhile, the rest of the programming team: Harry Knowles (AICN), Todd Brown (Twitch), Blake Ethridge (Cinema is Dope), Rodney Perkins (Twitch), Marc Walkow (New York Asian Film Festival) and Eric Vespe (AICN) are hitting festivals and markets in Hong Kong, Italy, Tokyo and Toronto, researching the web, watching submissions, following up with sales agents and emailing producers and directors from all nationalities. Collectively we watched thousands of films this year and pared that list down to the 120 official selections: 70 features and 50 shorts from over 26 countries. We hope you like our selections! A new feature at Fantastic Fest is the Highball which opens exclusively for Fantastic Fest badgeholders on opening day of the festival. The Highball is the best diner/lounge this side of 1960 featuring eight lanes of bowling with rental by the hour; seven different themed karaoke rooms; four lanes of skeeball with ticketed prizes you won’t find anywhere else, and a ballroom event space set to host the best dance parties, live music, and karaoke nights that will leave you hoarse for days. We'll be at the Highball for the opening and closing night parties, a 3D Dance Party, the Fantastic Feud, a Michael Jackson dance party, and much more. The Highball opens daily at 4 PM, earlier on Saturday and Sunday and can also be used as a quiet retreat for bloggers, journalists and festival attendees to check email and post articles. We have joined forces with RealD this year to bring together an incredible slate of 3D films, entertainment and education. First off, we are hosting a sneak-preview of TOY STORY 1 and 2 in 3D. The Alamo South Lamar has very recently been equipped with Sony 4K digital projection and RealD 3D lenses, just in time for the festivities. We are also getting a sneak peak at scenes from James Cameron's upcoming AVATAR.

  • Film Reviews
Page 117 FILM REVIEWS Year of the Remake: The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man Jenny McDonnell The current trend for remakes of 1970s horror movies continued throughout 2006, with the release on 6 June of John Moore’s The Omen 666 (a sceneforscene reconstruction of Richard Donner’s 1976 The Omen) and the release on 1 September of Neil LaBute’s The Wicker Man (a reimagining of Robin Hardy’s 1973 film of the same name). In addition, audiences were treated to remakes of The Hills Have Eyes, Black Christmas (due Christmas 2006) and When a Stranger Calls (a film that had previously been ‘remade’ as the opening sequence of Scream). Finally, there was Pulse, a remake of the Japanese film Kairo, and another addition to the body of remakes of nonEnglish language horror films such as The Ring, The Grudge and Dark Water. Unsurprisingly, this slew of remakes has raised eyebrows and questions alike about Hollywood’s apparent inability to produce innovative material. As the remakes have mounted in recent years, from Planet of the Apes to King Kong, the cries have grown ever louder: Hollywood, it would appear, has run out of fresh ideas and has contributed to its evergrowing bank balance by quarrying the classics. Amid these accusations of Hollywood’s imaginative and moral bankruptcy to commercial ends in tampering with the films on which generations of cinephiles have been reared, it can prove difficult to keep a level head when viewing films like The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man.

00:00:00 Music Music "Switchblade Comb" by Mobius VanChocStraw. A jaunty, jazzy tune reminiscent of the opening theme of a movie. Music continues at a lower volume as April introduces herself and her guest, and then it fades out. 00:00:08 April Wolfe Host Welcome to Switchblade Sisters, where women get together to slice and dice our favorite action and genre films. I'm April Wolfe. Every week, I invite a new female filmmaker on—a writer, director, actor, or producer—and we talk in-depth about one of their fave genre films, perhaps one that influenced their own work in some small way, and today I'm very excited to have writer-director Alice Waddington here with me. Hi, Alice! 00:00:28 Alice Guest Hi, April! How are you? Waddington [Music fades out.] 00:00:30 April Host Oh, I'm quite well. [Alice laughs.] Despite fires raging. 00:00:32 Alice Guest Oh my goodness. 00:00:33 April Host But I gotta say your pink jumpsuit—pink corduroy jumpsuit is really livening up the place. 00:00:39 Alice Guest [Laughs.] Thank you so much. I'm—you know, I am on my Logan's Run stuff already. So. [Laughs.] 00:00:44 April Host Absolutely. I mean, Halloween should be year-round. [Alice laughs.] Okay, so for those of you who are not as familiar with Alice's work, please let me give you an introduction. Alice Waddington was born in a rural background, but she was raised in the big city of Bilbao, Spain.
