20th Anniversary White Rock Senior Center had a 20th Anniversary party on August 3 at the White Rock Baptist Church. What a cele- bration it was! We even sang “Happy Birthday“ to us! Our friends at Aspen Ridge Lodge sponsored the entrees of salmon, BBQ, drinks and beans. Other food donations from Time Out Pizza, Smith’s and the Bandelier Grill rounded The 20th Anniversary party for the White Rock Senior Center out the first course. Equally enjoyable was the premiere of “Cheers for 20 Years” – a delightful video written by Mary Nunz and Mary Venable. It was produced by PAC 8 and starred many of our WRSC members. We were happy to honor the two Marys for their immense efforts on this project, and we are grateful to Annie Bard for all her work puting on such a party (while at the same time overseeing the move of the center!) Congratulations One of the two Anniversary cakes provided by AARP. WRSC and may the next 20 years be as successful as the first 20 have been!

The Buzz from the WRSC Hive Location We are up and running with the help of the generous Los Alamos community. Thank you to the WR Baptist Church for hosting our 20th Birthday and October Potluck, Creole Novelle for hosting our September Fish Buffet, the WR Library for welcoming small groups and activities and, of course, TRK for taking such good care of us and making us feel at home. Our schedule is a busy one, but we would love to hear your ideas and suggestions for new programing. Come see our space!

Lockhart Report The White Rock Master Plan Implementation Committee met on September 14. The report on rehabilitating the White Rock Senior Cen- ter was not encouraging. The current completion date is possibly August 2016 (at least eight months behind schedule). The committee will be writ- ing a letter to the Los Alamos County Council expressing their concern over the issues that have slowed the project. Seniors and other members of the community that are affected by this project are urged to do the same. P a g e 8

New LAVA Assistant Please welcome Sarah Chandler, LAVA’s new Administrative Assis- tant. Sarah brings with her an extensive background in volunteerism with many different organizations, including Pinon School, Boy Scouts, her church and Family Strengths Network. Her most recent job was at Family Strengths coordinating the Many Mothers program. Sarah and her family enjoy camping, hiking, skiing and traveling. You may have already seen her hard at work, with her ready smile and “bit-o-blue” hair. Volunteer Spotlight Tom Oliphant has been delighting BESC lunch participants for more than 5 years with his talented piano playing. Many of you may not know that this thoughtful pianist spends 20+ hours a week carefully selecting, arranging and practicing what he plays on Friday. In addition, he makes copies of the songs that he plays, which are placed on the lunch tables, so that everyone can know the songs that he is performing. We have Winnie Berry (BESC’s longtime Wednesday pianist) to thank for Tom’s volunteering as a pianist. Tom began playing the piano in 1939 and his early work centered heavily on classical music. He spent the first 2 ½ years in LSU’s music program and then transferred to the Physics department to complete his undergrad- uate degree. He received his Master’s degree from Cornell where scien- tist Phillip Morrison recommended him for a job at LANL. Tom went on to receive his Ph.D. from Rice and returned to LANL for the continuation of his career. Tom spent years learning to read, arrange and play popular music and took lessons from Albuquer- que Symphony pianist Alice Shefett, Professor George Robert from UNM and Rosalie Heller, a longtime Los Alamos piano teacher. He played chamber music at Fuller Lodge on numerous occa- sions about 20 – 30 years ago. His fellow chamber musicians were Cliff Plopper (Flute & Piano), Ralph Lewis (Clarinet & Piano), and Lana Evans (Cello & Piano). He has also had many solo piano performances at Fuller Lodge. Many, many thanks, Tom! Thank You Volunteers! Thank you to the wonderful volunteers who helped to make the August Blood Drive successful! Thank you, too, to Lorraine Thorn for making the egg salad for sandwiches and to the Day Out Pro- gram and Fred Ortiz, BESC Kitchen Chef, and the kitchen staff for preparing the four dozen eggs necessary for the egg salad. Special thanks go to Irene Powell for volunteering to put up banners, buying supplies and generally overseeing the blood drive! The next blood drive will be in January. Also, thank you to the volunteers who helped to make this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s a suc- cess! Volunteers Needed Interested in helping out at the senior center? Would you like only to be called on to volunteer from time to time? Then you are the person LAVA is looking for to help with reception and the lunch pro- gram! Please contact us at 662-8923 or e-mail at [email protected] for further in- formation. Volunteer Hours It’s that time again for LAVA’s quarterly report to the state. Please contact the LAVA office with any volunteer hours that you have not yet submitted. Also, please stop by to say hi – we love to see you! Thank you all so much for the time that you dedicate to helping our community!

ALOHA In Hawaii Aloha means greetings, farewell or I love you. It all applies here. August 6 was my last day, I have retired as LAVA Director (previously RSVP). Its been 9 years and 4 months that I have had the ride of my life working with the wonderful staff at the Betty Ehart Senior Center and with the greatest people in the world, "volunteers". People who give their time and talents to help others with nothing in return but the fellowship of working with others and the peace of mind that they are need- ed and can make a difference. I recommend it to everyone. It’s good for you physically and mentally to keep active and it’s good for the community. To all you volunteers, keep up the good work, thank you for all you do and the help you have given me over the years. Remember to get in your hours!

People ask me what am I going to do in retirement; the list is long. Like most people I need to clean out closets and the garage at home and at my mother's place, I want to read books, take hikes, take courses, practice my piano and ukulele, travel, ski, ride my bike, spend more time with my mother, start back with Community Bible Study on Thursday mornings, use the hammock (if I find a few minutes) and of course do volunteer work. My husband and I will still work with the READY Team with the Red Cross to help set up shelters during disasters, and we will continue to set up the Blood Drives, and serve on county and church boards. I will continue to be on the Basic Needs subcom- mittee for the Community Health Council, Aquatic Center Advisory Subcommittee, JJAB and attend the county's monthly Emergency Preparedness meetings. So retirement will not mean for me what Webster defines it as "withdraw from action"!

This ride has been fun, but it’s time to get off and start another stage of my life. I thank everyone I worked with and for. I loved the very special party you all threw for me on my last day. Pauline (thanks for the theme), Kay (thanks for the balloons), Pat, Ruth, Annie, Laurie, Robert, Fred and Mike (those chocolate bars were terrific), Andy, Taylor. I don't know who to thank for what but I know it was a group effort, THANK YOU SO MUCH! The orchids and hibiscus plant are beautiful! Special thanks to my replacement, Linda Boncella - your cookies and cupcakes were delicious and the decorations wonderful! The volunteer program is in good hands. I am so grateful for you. Thank you Kathleen and the uke class for your impressive performance. I can't wait to get back with you all. What a luau! I will see you around - you are not finished with me yet.

ALOHA! Irene Powell
