Only three years after Victoria’s accession, on 10 February 1840, she married her first cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in the Chapel Royal of St James’s Palace, London. The pair first met in 1836, when Albert travelled to London for Princess Victoria’s 17th birthday. In the years that followed, Albert wrote to Victoria many times. He visited in the autumn of 1839 and, five days after his arrival at Windsor, Victoria proposed, as custom dictated. Victoria’s intention to marry was declared formally to the Privy Council on 23 November, 1840. BC624MW £12.95

We can now offer you the Benham Engraved Blocks that were used to create the first Benham covers. Each block has been painstakingly carved out with such precision to produce a delicate work of art which was then used to illustrate the covers. Each block displays great craftsmanship right down to the smallest detail, with each one depicting a moment in history - they are a snapshot back in time. The blocks take real skill as each image is engraved in reverse - the technique developed by wood engraver Thomas Bewick at the end of the 18th Century. Cath’s father R. G. Broadhurst produced the early Benham covers and was a true artisan. He was especially clever as he created several blocks to fit together; by using different colours and engravings he was able to produce a multi-dimensional illustration. When you see how intricate these pieces are, you realise just how difficult that must have been to achieve.

THE COLLECTION INCLUDES THE COMPLETE BLOCKS FROM THE FOLLOWING COVERS: 1972 Churches - Five 1972 Silver Wedding - Pair 1973 Inigo Jones - Pair 1973 Christmas - Pair 1974 Fire - Pair 1974 Christmas - Three 1975 Charity - Pair 1975 Architecture - Eight 1975 Sailing - Three 1975 Railway - One 1976 Reformers - Five 1976 Roses - Pair 1977 Sport - Single TWO SETS OF VERY SPECIAL BLOCKS, DON’T MISS OUT ON THIS PRODUCED BUT NEVER USED ONCE IN A LIFETIME 1980 Birds - Four 1980 London Landmarks - Five OPPORTUNITY TO OWN THESE AND THE FOLLOWING WHERE A FEW MINIATURE MASTERPIECES, OF THE BLOCKS ARE MISSING: AN INTEGRAL PART OF BENHAM 1974 Britons - Six COVER PRODUCTION HISTORY. 1978 Buildings - Four Two Mystery ‘First Day Cover’ text blocks

About Wood Engraving... Wood engraving is a printmaking technique in which an artist works an image into a block of wood. It uses relief printing, where the artist applies ink to the face of the block and prints using relatively low pressure. Woodcuts were a common technique in printing in the 15th and 16th Centuries, yet the medium began to decline in the 17th century. They were still made for basic printing press work such as newspapers or almanacs. The beginnings of modern wood engraving techniques developed at the end of the 18th and into the 19th century, with the works of Englishman Thomas Bewick. Though not, as frequently asserted, the inventor of wood-engraving, he was the first to recognise that, as the incisions made by the graver on the wood block printed white, the right use of the medium was to base his designs as much as possible on white lines and areas, and so he became the first to use his graver as a drawing instrument and to employ the medium as an original art. Bewick’s quality of work attracted far more people than previous methods. R.G. Broadhurst’s employment of this technique on the first Benham covers meant the quality was second to none.

The quality of these covers are amazing given the period in which they were produced in and were far ahead of covers in the UK at this time. Fluegel managed to get his covers postmarked on key dates, giving you a chance to have truly historic cover in your collection. Liberation of Luxembourg - 10th September 1944 Allied tanks entered the capital city on 10th September triggering the rise of the Luxembourg resistance who fought the fierce Battle of Vianden Castle against German forces. The liberation was successful however during the German Ardennes Offensive in December much of the north of the country was retaken, but the Allies held the capital and subsequently pushed German forces back out of Luxembourg. The liberation led to Gustav Simon, the Nazi Gauleiter for Luxembourg being captured by the British; and Damian Kratzenberg, leader of the Luxembourg Nazi movement was executed for his wartime activities FL04 £40 Final Raising of the American Flag on Iwo Jima- 14th March 1945 One of the most iconic photos of the Second World War is of the raising of the American Flag on Iwo Jima. Taken by Joe Rosenthal it shows six US Marines raising a flag at the peak of Mount Suribachi, the highest point on the island. Iwo Jima was a strategically important military target despite being only 8 square miles in size, and is part of chain of Volcanic Islands which lye 750 miles south of Tokyo. The photograph was originally published in newspapers on February 25th 1945. It captured the minds of millions and Americans and generated huge publicity and funds for the war effort. It has been reprinted in thousands of different publications since, ensuring its place as the defining image of America’s war effort. Three of the Marines in the photograph; Sergeant Michael Strank, Corporal Harlon Block, and Private FL15 £45 First Class Franklin Sousley, were killed within a few days of the photo being taken. The remaining three; Corporals Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, and Harold Schultz, all survived the conflict.

Liberation of Amsterdam - 5th May 1945 On 5th May 1945 Canadian General Charles Foulkes and German Commander- in-Chief met at the Hotel de Wereld in and agreed the surrender of all German forces in the . Much of the south Netherlands had been liberated in 1944 but the rest had remained under the grip of Nazi oppression and suffered desperately from the devastating famine during the 1944 winter. By the end of the war over 200,000 Dutch men and women had died, more than half being victims of the Holocaust, with the Netherlands suffering the highest per capita death rate of all occupied Western European countries.

The Liberation of Manila 4th February 1945 The Battle of Manila raged for a month between February 3rd and March 3rd 1945. It was a major battle fought by American and Filipino forces against Japan which ended nearly three years of Japanese occupation and was heralded by General Douglas MacArthur as a pivotal moment of the Reconquest Campaign. The battle witnessed the devastating massacre of over 100,000 Filipino civilians by Japanese soldiers and the widespread destruction of Manilla’s architectural and cultural heritage. The Manila Massacre was judged by the postwar military tribunal as a war crime and both the Japanese Commanding General Tomoyuki Yamashita, and his chief of staff Akira Muto were found responsible and executed. Rangoon Liberated - 3rd May 1945 Operation Dracula was the airborne and amphibious attack on Rangoon by British, American, and Indian forces. The operation was on a tight time scheduled due to the need to capture Rangoon before the monsoon season began and secure communication lines between Allied troops across Burma. During April 1945 the British 14th Army advanced to within 40 miles of Rangoon but were delayed until May 1st by a Japanese force at Pegu. On the same day a Gurkha parachute battalion landed at Elephant Point on the Rangoon River, securing coastal batteries and clearing the water of mines. The next day the Indian 26th Division began landing troops on both sides of the river and discovered the Japanese forces FL24 £30 had already abandoned Rangoon and the city was occupied without opposition.

Japan Capitulates - 14th August 1945 The dropping of nuclear weapons on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the 6th and 9th August, coupled with the Soviet invasion of Manchuria, shattered Japanese hopes of being able to repel an assault on their mainland. On August 14th six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan announced it would accept the terms of its unconditional surrender as laid out at the Potsdam Conference. The announcement divided Japan with over one thousand troops unsuccessfully attempting to storm the Imperial Palace and prevent the transmission of the surrender. FL40 £50

CL234 www.buckinghamcovers.com 17 General Jonathan Wainright 10th September 1945

In December 1940 General Wainright was despatched to the Philippines to serve under General MacArthur, and tasked to resist the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. The invasion began in December 1941 and by January 1942 his forces had been pushed back to the Bataan Peninsula and Corregidor. Following the evacuation of General MacArthur, Wainwright became Allied Commander in the Philippines. However his forces were outnumbered and following the Japanese attack on Corregidor on May 5th and the surrender of 70,000 FL45 £50 Allied troops on Bataan on April 9th, Wainwright formally surrendered to General Homma. Wainwright was held in prison camps until his liberation by the Red Army in August 1945 and was the highest ranking American POW. Dubbed by his men as a ‘fighting general’, Wainwright won the respect of his men and returned home as a hero on the 10th September 1945. He was greeted by a huge ticker tape parade and received the Medal of Honor for his leadership during the fall of the Philippines. Belgrade Liberated - 16th October 1944

The Belgrade Offensive ran from September 14th until October 20th 1944 by the Soviet, Bulgarian, and Yugoslav armies. The objectives of the campaign focused on ending the German occupation of Belgrade and Serbia as a whole, whilst splitting the German communication lines from Greece to Hungary. The offensive was headed by the Soviet 3rd Ukrainian Front and Yugoslav 1st Army Group, whilst concurrent operations in the south involved the Bulgarian 2nd Army and Yugoslav XIII Army Corps, plus the 2nd Ukrainian Front pushed northwards from the Yugoslav-Bulgarian border.

US Forces invade the Philippines 20th October 1944 The Liberation of the Philippines was a joint American and Filipino campaign to oust the Japanese forces from the Philippines. Since mid-1942 the Americans had supplied the Filipino guerrilla resistance via submarines and parachute drops to allow the force to harass the Japanese troops and establish control of both the jungle and mountainous regions. The campaign begun on October 20th 1944 with amphibious landings on the island of Leyte and by the time of the Japanese surrender in September 1945, the US had suffered over 70,000 casualties, whilst over 335,000 Japanese soldiers had died and a further 10,000 captured. Prague Liberated 8th May 1945 The Prague Offensive was the last major Soviet European operation during World War II, lasting from May 6th to May 11th 1945. The Soviets suffered over 50,000 casualties across these 6 days, with German losses including casualties and prisoners totalling at nearly 900,000 men. The last two large intact military formations of Germany, The German Army Group Centre and Army Group Ostmark, were virtually wiped out. The establishment of a large Soviet presence in Czechoslovakia was a key political aim of Stalin who used this military success to establish Communist influence in the Czechoslovak Army FL28 £45 and government, before later establishing the country as a Soviet satellite state in 1948.

This year sees the 180th Anniversary of the Penny Black, the covers offered here take us back to 1940 and the 50th Anniversary. At the time there was lots of discussion about what should be done as we were at the start of World War II and this was one of the reasons the special Exhibition was moved out of London to Bournemouth.
