Old houses, characteristic buildings, and narrow friendly streets define the scene. More on the town’s history can be found in the museum "De Casteelse Poort". Wageningen is a university city with the atmosphere typical to university cities the world over. This manifests itself in its bustling nightlife, student society activities and the various festivals organised during the summer months. Wageningen is also known for its important role during the Second World War. In May 1945, the German capitulation was signed in hotel "De Wereld". In springtime, it’s especially enjoyable to visit the two botanical gardens in Wageningen. The "Wageningse Berg" offers a beautiful view of the river Rhine (Rijn) and its wetlands. 4 Shopping To find the exact locations of shops in Wageningen you can check this map. International Christian Fellowship Wageningen (ICF) ICF is an interdenominational Christian Fellowship that offers hospitality to foreign people visiting Wageningen through various ministries. They are officially supported by five bible based Dutch Wageningen Churches: PKN, GKV and NGK (protestant), Salem (evangelical) and Vineyard (evangelical/Pentecostal). The ICF English spoken worship services are a time of worship and growth. During the services there is a time of singing, preaching and praying. Movie W has luxurious chairs with ample leg room and has Dolby Digital Surround Sound, making it one of the best appointed art-house theatres in the Netherlands. The film season runs from September to July. Movie W organises a special film weekend each January: Movie Weekend. Movie W shows films from around the world. On the Movie W website you will find which films are shown and in which language they are. It also shows the language of the subtitles. Unfortunately, most of the time the subtitles will not be in English. Dutch film distributors only have the rights to the Dutch subtitles. But they are working on this.     Remembrance Day and Liberation Day in Holland The liberation of the Netherlands, from September 1944 to April 1945, played a key role in the culmination of the Second World War, as the Allied forces closed in on Germany from all sides. The First Canadian Army played a major role in the liberation of the Dutch people who had suffered terrible hunger and hardship under the increasingly desperate German occupiers. The First Canadian Army also played a leading role in opening Belgium and the Netherlands' Scheldt estuary (tidal river), gateway to the port of Antwerp. Access to this port was essential to maintain supply lines to the Allied armies as they continued their push toward Germany to defeat Adolf Hitler's forces and free Western Europe from four years of Nazi occupation which had begun in April 1940. Following the conclusion of the Battle of the Scheldt in November 1944, winter brought a period of reduced fighting in anticipation of the push over the Rhine River in the new year. When the new Allied offensives began in 1945, the First Canadian Army helped liberate the northeastern and western Netherlands, until the German Army officially surrendered May 4, 1945. Size of the Canadian Armed Forces The First Canadian Army in northwestern Europe during the final phases of the war was a powerful force, the largest army that had ever been under the control of a Canadian general. The strength of this army ranged from approximately 105,000 to 175,000 Canadian soldiers to anywhere from 200,000 to over 450,000 when including the soldiers from other nations.

    NEWSLETTER MAY 2020 Welcome to the May Newsletter and what a month it has been! As most of you are now aware Glenn Kirkman our General Manager has resigned. The timing in relation to the Covid-19 is a bit unfortunate but we accept the challenge ahead. He has taken up a position closer to home, however, we will of course have a farewell but need to wait for re- strictions to lift. I have accepted the role as the new General Manager of ATV and have appointed Harry Wu as Clinical Care Manager. We have confidence in his abilities to ensure the clinical standards and care for residents are in good hands. We also welcome Margaret Russell, our newly appointed Business Manager. Margaret will take up Virginia’s administrative functions when she retires in August and will also develop the Home Care component of the Abel Tasman. She will be supported by our Accountant Ishmam Kabir. Lastly, Jeremy Edwards from our Maintenance Department has been appointed as our Systems Support Manager. He will be working closely with the General Manager and Senior Manage- ment Team functional running of the Village and to ensure a high level of communication, com- pliance and strategic forward planning in the development of the Village. We are fortunate to be able to draw on the pool of talent available to us. In other news, as per the April newsletter, we held an Auction day for our “ATBees” on the 30th March 2020, the session raised $1,700.00 dollars which was donated to Grace Munro Hostel in Bundarra, an 11-bed facility west of Armidale.
