Wageningen

Wageningen received city rights in the year 1263. Old houses, characteristic buildings, and narrow friendly streets define the scene. More on the town’s history can be found in the museum "De Casteelse Poort". Wageningen is a university city with the atmosphere typical to university cities the world over. This manifests itself in its bustling nightlife, student society activities and the various festivals organised during the summer months. Wageningen is also known for its important role during the Second World War. In May 1945, the German capitulation was signed in hotel "De Wereld". In springtime, it’s especially enjoyable to visit the two botanical gardens in Wageningen. The "Wageningse Berg" offers a beautiful view of the river Rhine (Rijn) and its wetlands.

Dutch Festivals

Carnival Carnival originally was a Catholic festival. Carnival is celebrated the four days before Ash Wednesday, which is exactly forty days before Easter. Carnival is mostly celebrated in the southern and eastern regions of the Netherlands. Carnival typically involves a public celebration or parade combining elements of a circus, masks and public street parties. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations, which often disrupt daily life. Wageningen has four Carnival societies, but in contrast to the southern regions carnival does not take over the streets in Wageningen.

April 27: Koningsdag – the King’s Birthday April 27th Koningsdag (Kings day) is celebrated in the Netherlands. All through history, the Dutch Royal family has been very popular and the birthday of the King or Queen is celebrated enthusiastically. On Koningsdag there are festivities throughout the country. For example in Amsterdam and Utrecht there are second hand markets (vrijmarkten). People of all ages sell anything and everything all along the streets. In Wageningen there is also a vrijmarkt which is always held in the main shopping street (Hoogstraat). Do not forget to bargain! In cities like , Utrecht or Amsterdam there are larger festivals with several pop podia throughout the city. The pop podia feature many different styles of music.

May 4: Remembrance Day On May 4 we remember those who died during the Second World War; Soldiers, as well as members of the various resistance movements and those who died in the concentration camps in Europe and Indonesia. At 20:00 there is a two minute silence. In many municipalities, people come together for remembrance ceremonies and speeches. Particularly in The Hague, on the Waalsdorpervlakte, and in Amsterdam, on the Dam. Flags are hung at half-mast on many buildings and houses. Nearby Wageningen, in the village of Rhenen, on the Grebbeberg there is a military cemetery where a special ceremony is held. If you want to attend this ceremony which is held every year on May 4, we recommend to be there at about 19:30. There is also ceremony in Wageningen on the 5 Meiplein in front of Hotel De Wereld. Hotel de Wereld is well-known because on May 6 1945 the terms of surrender between the Allies and the

13

German forces were negotiated in this hotel. The peace treaty was signed in hotel “de Wereld”as well.

May 5: Liberation Day This is the day on which the Dutch celebrate their total liberation from the occupying forces in 1945. On this day, flags are hung at full mast and the streets take on a festive look. On the day of May 5 there are many “liberation festivals” (bevrijdingsfestivals) in many cities throughout the country. In Wageningen there is also a “Liberation festival”, with performances of Dutch and international artists in the centre of the town. These performances are held during the whole day. On this day just take a walk through the centre of Wageningen and enjoy the festivities that are going on everywhere. Have fun! More information on this website: click here

December 5: “Sinterklaas” (Saint Nicolas) Sinterklaas always visits the Netherlands in November. He arrives here aboard his steamboat all the way from Spain. December 6 is Sinterklaas’ birthday. Sinterklaas has through the centuries been regarded as the patron saint of children – therefore on December 5, Sinterklaas-eve, he brings all children in the Netherlands gifts.
