Outlook A still youthful Central College volleyball team is determined to return the Dutch to their traditional role as an Iowa Conference and NCAA Division III contender. A record 17 league championship trophies rest in Central’s display case. Winners of three national championships, the Dutch have earned 10 NCAA tournament berths and claimed 12 straight league championships from 1996-2007. But while last year’s young club made steady progress, the team is eyeing an upgrade from a 22-12 record and 4-4 league mark. It was a respectable showing, but not up to the lofty expectations the Dutch set for themselves. “We’re so much more experienced this year,” said Kent Clayberg, who has guided the Dutch to five conference crowns in seven seasons as head coach. “Last year, we often had four or five first-time starters on the court. It was a great year of gain- ing experience for a pretty young team.” Thirteen letterwinners return, including five of the seven starters. “We return a lot of players with a lot of experience,” Clayberg said. “We should be a much steadier, more efficient and more competitive team this fall. This is a group that wants to be competitive and wants to take on a challenge. They believe in each other and possess a strong sense of commitment to each other and the ideals of the program.”

Setter Clayberg is confident in his team quarterback, junior setter Maggie Snyder, a co-captain. She averaged 9.4 assists per set in 34 matches. Snyder was the team’s most valuable freshman in 2008. “Maggie has all the tools to be a great college setter,” Clayberg said. “She’s athletic, quick, smart, and has a beautiful release. She’s competitive and a great communicator. With a full season running the offense under her belt she has the experi- ence to lead the team where we want it to go.” A pair of sophomores, Hannah Worrall and Libby Herriot, show promise. “They’re short on experience but they had good training opportunities at the JV level,” Clayberg said. “They’re different types of setters. Hannah is steady and sets a very true ball. Libby is an extraordinary athlete and very explosive. They’re both smart players and good leaders. They are both capable of helping at the varsity level.”

Outside hitter Juniors Caitlin Kouba (5-9) and Amy Golly (5-10) were part-time starters at outside hitter a year ago. Golly averaged 1.97 kills and 2.92 digs while hitting .160. Kouba, a team co-captain, posted 1.75 kills and 1.85 digs with a .203 attack percentage. “This should be a position of strength for us,” Clayberg said. “They’re both very athletic, mobile and powerful outside hitters. They’re very smart and benefit from getting a ton of repetitions last year, which will make them a handful for defenses. They both have excellent ball-handling skills as well.” Cyndi Johnson, a 5-8 senior, can contribute as well after missing most of her junior campaign with injury. “Early in the season she had done a good job of coming in and playing defense,” Clayberg said. “We’re looking for offen- sive development from her this fall as well.” Tess Reinig, a 5-9 sophomore, is ready for a bigger role after appearing in 12 matches last year. “Tess trained with the varsity and earned some playing time as a freshman,” Clayberg said. “She’s a very steady, very poised competitor and a complete ballplayer. She’ll have a major impact on this team.”

Volleyball 33 Nicole Strasko, Michelle Ness and Mallory Sturtz return from the JV squad as well.

Right-side hitter The Dutch sustained an off-season setback when 6-0 senior right-side hitter Ashley Ellingson was sidelined. A team co- captain, her season is expected to get a late start. Last year she averaged 2.24 kills with a .196 attack percentage and 1.57 digs. “Ashley’s a very strong right-side hitter,” Clayberg said. “She’s capable of being a real difference-maker offensively. She hits multiple lanes and multiple tempos, and possesses good back-row skills to play all the way around. We’ll bring her along cau- tiously, but expect to have her back at full strength later in the season.” Until Ellingson returns, the Dutch will likely look to 5-10 senior Katie Huff or 5-9 sophomore Sam Retz. “Katie has experience both as a middle hitter and right side hitter,” Clayberg said. “She’s right there waiting to explode. All she needs is some consistent playing time to find herself. She’s got the tools to be a very powerful player and is going to do a great job for us. She will certainly more than hold her own in Ashley’s absence and when Ashley comes back, I believe Katie is going to find a way to get on the floor. She’s a hard-working player who does all the right things. “Sam shifted positions from a setter to a hitter last fall – she is a dynamically athletic player with a bright future. Spending last fall on the varsity roster should accelerate her growth into this year.” Shawna Geoffroy, a 6-5 senior, hopes to figure into the mix as well.

Middle hitter Central has some graduation holes to fill but 6-0 juniors Kiley Meyers and Haley Brillhart have both experience and potential. Meyers hit a team-high .287 with 1.72 kills and was also first in blocks with 0.84. Brillhart hit .274 with 2.08 kills and 0.75 blocks. “They have substantial experience and are two physical, athletic middle hitters,” Clayberg said. “This year they’ll be going from being athletic middle hitters to being more complete players who recognize and attack defenses, utilizing more shots and tempos in their swings to be more efficient. “They both can be, at times, shutdown blockers. Much of what they’ve done early in their careers was just instinctive. Now they’re entering into a more conceptual understanding of the game.” Huff could also find a home in the middle when she’s not playing on the right side. Deanna Chapline, Ashley Pederson and Holly Osborne provide depth as well.

Defensive specialist Central returns three of its top four defensive specialists, including second-team all-conference libero Chelsea Grieger, a 5-6 junior. Grieger, a two-year starter, recorded a team-high 5.95 digs and was also tops in service aces with 38. She received confer- ence player of the week honors as well. “Chelsea reads defenders well,” Clayberg said. “She has a knack for putting herself in the right place at the right time and has a steady demeanor.” Nichole McGrew, a 5-6 senior and team co-captain, appeared in 32 matches, averaging 1.86 digs, while 5-5 junior Liz Sanders played in 22 matches with 1.04 digs. “All three are very capable players,” Clayberg said. “Our ball control should be a real strength. “Nichole has a lot of competitiveness and intensity that brings energy to the team. She takes every service and attack as a personal challenge. “Liz is a very steady, very consistent defensive player. She’s ready to take on a bigger role at the varsity level. She’s a very committed, hard-working player and a relentless competitor.” Providing defensive depth will be junior Jenae Jenison and sophomores Lindsey Von Gillern, Morgan Sharp and Emily Huegel.

The season Within the Iowa Conference, defending champion Simpson will likely contend, but Clayberg views Luther, Wartburg, Loras and Coe as threats as well. “It’s a tough read as far as who’s favored,” he said. “The conference has become more balanced over recent years.” The Dutch will again embark on a major trip, heading to the Salisbury Invitational in Maryland Oct. 16-17. Clayberg is confident that Central’s experience will solve some of the 2009 campaign’s frustrations. “The most telling statistic from last year’s team was our offensive inefficiency,” he said, noting that the Dutch hit an unchar- acteristic .199. “Statistically we measured up to the top 20 teams in the country in most categories, but our offensive efficiency was a glaring difference. “It’s not that we couldn’t hit the ball, but we didn’t consistently hit the right shot at the right time.

34 Volleyball “With experience, I think we’ll be bolder, more confident and a little more willing to take a risk. That was the focal point of our spring training and I expect that to be an area where the team will be different from a year ago. We’ll see what contri- butions our newcomers bring to the table as well.” Clayberg can’t wait to get started. “These players are ambitious and competitive,” he said. “It’s a fun group to be around.”
