KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Carla Willig Professor, City University of London

Professor Willig has a long-standing interest in qualitative research methods and their usage in psychology. Ever since she chose to use a qualitative research method for her doctoral research in the late 1980s when such approaches were still very much at the fringes within the discipline of psychology, she has engaged with questions about the nature, status and legitimacy of knowledge claims. She has used a variety of qualitative research methods in her own research, including grounded theory methodology (for her doctoral research in the 1980s), discourse analysis (throughout the 1990s) and more recently phenomenological research methods (2000 onwards). She is currently conducting qualitative metasynthesis research into the experience of living with terminal cancer. She is also exploring dual focus methodology by combining Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) with Foucauldian Discourse Analysis (FDA). Her most recent books include ‘Qualitative Interpretation and Analysis in Psychology’ (2012, McGraw Hill) ‘Introducing Quali- tative Research in Psychology’ (2013, 3rd edition, McGraw Hill/ Open University Press), and ‘The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research in Psychology’ (2017, with Wendy Stainton Rogers, Lon- don: Sage).

Documentary Screening Friday 18 June 20.30-22.00

“Mataroa”, by Andreas Siadimas In December 1945 and while Greece was devastated by civil war, the French Institute of Athens manages to charter the military ship “Mataroa”, offering at about 150 young Greek scientists and artists the possibility of escaping to France. Amongst those who boarded this ship were representatives of a blooming generation, whose work marked the intellectual and artistic landscape of postwar Europe: K. Axelos, C. Castoriadis, G. Kandylis, K. Koulentianos, M. Kranaki, K. Papaioannou, M. Makris, N. Svoronos, M. Hatzilazarou are just some of the names. Later on, Iannis Xenakis would be added to the group.

The documentary demonstrates a challenging but ultimately positive outcome that resulted from an unexpected and initially traumatic cultural intersection and personal displacement. It depicts the process of a journey aiming to offer a living testimony of this epic passage between three different generations and also making a comment upon the timeless relationship between France and Greece. The historical event of this journey thus becomes topical, acquiring a personal touch through each narration and through its distinct artistic expressions.
