Franconia Winegrowing region: Wine has been cultivated in Franconia’s vineyards and cellars for over 1,200 years. Once virtually only produced by monasteries, today it’s in the capable hands of many professional winemakers. The Franconian vines thrive on around 6,300 hectares. Just under 85 per cent of the vines are destined for white wines – primarily Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau and Bacchus. But the red wines are equally superb, some of them are velvety, some fruity and some piquant. Christian Stahl Vineyard The Stahl vineyard is younger than the majority of vineyards that it manages. Which is probably why Christian Stahl found it easy to disregard Franconian wine folklore. Instead, he offers high-quality contemporary wine. His wines are popular with his discerning customers and top eateries and have received excellent reviews in wine publications. In 2008 the renowned wine journalist Stuart Piggot designated Christian Stahl “Young wine producer of the year”. In 2012 Falstaff Germany named him “Newcomer of the year” and in 2013 the vineyard was given the third grape by the Gault Millau wine guide. In 2005 Christian Stahl took over his parents’ little vineyard (which had previously been an arable and pastoral farm) in Auernhofen near to Rothenburg on the Tauber. At the time, 1.5 hectares were covered in vines. Today the vineyard has 20 hectares of vines with soils made of shell limestone and marl clays on the slopes of the Tauber, Main and Steiger Forest.
