State Street Lucrecia Martel www.siskelfilmcenter.org CHICAGO PREMIERE! 2017, Alison Chernick, USA, 80 min. “Briskly entertaining…Good music and good company make ITZHAK a pleasure.” —Dennis Harvey, Variety. ITZHAK is a warm and intimate portrait of Itzhak Perlman, widely considered the greatest violinist of his time. We learn of the Israeli- born virtuoso’s battle with polio, and we see his breakthrough performance on the Ed Sullivan Show at age thirteen. But ITZHAK is less a biographical look-back than a present-tense chance to hang out with the effervescent and still very active 72-year-old as he zips around Manhattan in his motorized wheelchair. In English and Hebrew with English subtitles. DCP digital. In With Edie Falco, Jay Duplass, Kaitlyn Dever “The least jokey of Shelton’s films to date and arguably the most satisfying.” —John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter After unjustly serving twenty years for murder, 38-year-old Chris (Duplass) is released, thanks to the efforts of his high-school teacher Carol (Falco). Readjusting to life in his rainy Washington hometown proves awkward, especially when he pursues his attraction to Carol, and her alienated teenage daughter (Dever) develops an interest in him. Negotiating a delicate balance between cringe comedy and compassionate drama, indie stalwart Shelton (YOUR SISTER’S SISTER) achieves new highs in emotional depth and character complexity. SHORT SYNOPSIS IN THE SAME BREATH, directed by Nanfu Wang (“One Child Nation”), recounts the origin and spread of the novel coronavirus from the earliest days of the outbreak in Wuhan to its rampage across the United States. In a deeply personal approach, Wang, who was born in China and now lives in the United States, explores the parallel campaigns of misinformation waged by leadership and the devastating impact on citizens of both countries. Emotional first-hand accounts and startling, on-the-ground footage weave a revelatory picture of cover-ups and misinformation while also highlighting the strength and resilience of the healthcare workers, activists and family members who risked everything to communicate the truth. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT I spent a lot of my childhood in hospitals taking care of my father, who had rheumatic heart disease.

Media Contacts: For Immediate Release Brooks Addicott, 435.658.3456 December 3, 2008 [email protected] Amy McGee, 310.492.2333 [email protected] 2009 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FILMS IN COMPETITION Festival Celebrates 25 Years of Independent Filmmaking and Cinematic Storytelling Park City, UT—Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films selected to screen in the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions for the 25th Sundance Film Festival. In addition to the four Competition categories, the Festival presents films in five out-of-competition sections to be announced tomorrow. The 2009 Sundance Film Festival runs January 15-25 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah. The complete list of films is available at www.sundance.org/festival. "This year's films are not narrowly defined. Instead we have a blurring of genres, a crossing of boundaries: geographic, generational, socio-economic and the like," said Geoffrey Gilmore, Director, Sundance Film Festival. "The result is both an exhilarating and emotive Festival in which traditional mythologies are suspended, discoveries are made, and creative storytelling is embraced." "Audiences may be surprised by how much emotion this year's films evoke," said John Cooper, Director of Programming, Sundance Film Festival. "We are seeing the next evolution of the independent film movement where films focus on storytelling with a sense of connection and purpose." For the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, 118 feature-length films were selected including 88 world premieres, 18 North American premieres, and 4 U.S. premieres representing 21 countries with 42 first-time filmmakers, including 28 in competition.

  • CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and Counting…
5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now.

18 JAN 19 28 FEB 19 1 | 18 JAN 19 - 28 FEB 19 49 BELMONT STREET | BELMONTFILMHOUSE.COM What does it mean, ‘to play against type’? Come January/February you may find many examples. Usually it’s motivated by the opportunity to hold aloft a small gold-plated statue, but there are plenty memorable occasions where Hollywood’s elite pulled this trope off fantastically. Think Charlize Theron in Monster. Maybe Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine? Or Heath Ledger as Joker. These performances often come to dominate award season. Directors wrenching a truly transformative rendition out of their leads can be the difference between a potential big winner fading into obscurity, or being written into history. The class of 2019 appears particularly full of these turns. There might well be as much intrigue in figuring out which will be remembered, as in watching the performances themselves. ‘Unrecognisable as’ awards could go out to Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I in Mary Queen Of Scots; Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me?; Nicole Kidman in Destroyer; Christian Bale as Dick Cheney in Vice. Others of course have been down this road before. Steve Carell has come a long, long way since Michael Scott and he looks tremendous in Beautiful Boy. And Matt Dillon, who we’ll see in The House That Jack Built, has always had a penchant for the slightly off-colour. There’s probably no one more off-colour than Lars von Trier. Screening for one night only. At Belmont Filmhouse we try to play against type as much as possible.

  • Introduction
1 Introduction Philippe Garrel, an irregular auteur In April 2013, a retrospective of Philippe Garrel’s fi lms took place at the Magic Cin é ma, a municipal theatre in Bobigny, outside Paris. Such a location, on the periphery of the French capital, may seem inappropriate for the work of a longstanding director whom the fi lm critic Serge Daney spoke of as ‘le seul grand cin é aste fran ç ais de ma g é n é ration’ 1 (Jousse 1991 : 58). But both the accolade and this peripheral location are revealing of the ambiguous position Garrel has occupied within French fi lm culture during the last half century. While held in high esteem by peers and critics, he is only beginning now to receive some mainstream and popular recognition. This increased recognition is evidenced by the fi rst French international conference on Garrel that took place at Paris Nanterre University in November 2018 and by a more recent retrospective of Garrel’s work at the Cin é math è que Fran ç aise in September 2019.
