1 Transfer FAQ: Accepted Students

TRANSFER REVIEW

What courses are eligible for transfer into SVA? • Credit is awarded as the courses you've taken align with the curriculum for your chosen SVA major. • Courses must be taken at the undergraduate level at a regionally accredited institution. • Courses are eligible for transfer with grades of C or higher. • Online, foreign language, ESL, music, performance, physical education, and business courses are not eligible for transfer.

How was my transfer placement determined? • The transfer of credit and level of placement is determined on an individual, case-by-case basis with special attention given to your portfolio, specific classes you have taken, your grades, your choice of Fall or Spring entry, and the Department Chair's approval. • Placement is primarily dependent on studio coursework and portfolio, not necessarily on the total number of credits previously earned. • Due to the studio-based nature of our curriculum, it is not uncommon that applicants who have completed significant coursework in only the liberal arts get placed in the first-year program of their department.

What courses have I been exempted from taking at SVA? • Your transfer credits and placement with SVA can be found under Your Enrollment Steps in the applicant portal, located under "Resources" on the right. Please note that courses awarded as elective credit are not listed as exemptions.

Does SVA accept AP, IB, CAPE or A-Level results for credit? • AP exam results should be submitted to Academic Advisement for evaluation. Any exemptions will be noted by your Academic Advisor upon course registration. Contact [email protected] for more information. • Students who earn scores of 5, 6 or 7 on the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, higher-level (HL) examinations in certain subjects may be awarded humanities exemptions by Admissions. Contact Asha Sheshadri at [email protected] for more information on specific exams. • For GCE A-Level exams with grades of C or higher and CAPE exams with grades of 1, 2 or 3, credit may be awarded. All students must submit an ocial course-by-course evaluation to Admissions from ECE or WES.

RE-EVALUATION

I have additional coursework in-progress at my current school. Will these credits transfer to SVA? • Upon the receipt of an updated ocial college transcript, Admissions will re-evaluate your file for additional transfer credit. If any updates are made to your exemptions, you will be notified via email. Please note, “ocial” means that transcripts must be sent directly to SVA from the issuing institution. • Admissions will re-evaluate credits through the end of the course adjustment period of your first semester at SVA (typically mid September for students entering in the Fall term).

I didn’t get credit for a course I thought would transfer in. Can my credits be re-evaluated? • Please submit any questions about your credit to the Manager of Transfer Admissions, Asha Sheshadri, at [email protected]. Please include course descriptions for the credits in . It is important to keep in mind that credits are awarded only as they align with the curriculum of your intended major. Re-evaluation does not guarantee that additional credit or updated placement will be granted.

I’m considering enrolling in additional courses this summer to attending SVA. What should I take? • Typically, Humanities and Art History courses are good options to consider for additional credit. • The transferability of an additional course depends on credits that have already been approved for transfer into SVA along with the curriculum of your intended major. You may review the requirements for your intended SVA major at sva.edu/regbook. • You are welcome to submit a description for any courses you may consider taking to Admissions for a recommendation. Please keep in mind that additional credit may only be awarded upon the submission of an updated transcript listing grades and credits earned.

Should I register for classes now, or wait until my updated transcript has been re-evaluated? • It is possible to register for classes now based on your current exemptions. Frequently Asked Questions

As a new student, what are some ways that I can engage with Career Development? First, be sure to attend our Orientation presentation in September! You’ll meet our staff and hear more about our services and resources and how we can work with you during your time at SVA. Throughout the year we conduct workshops and industry events, and we encourage you to try to attend one of our events each semester. We also are available for one-on-one career counseling during your time at SVA (and for four years after graduation).

How can I find out about Career Development events? You will be informed of our workshops and events by email promos and a monthly newsletter. So check your SVA email account regularly and follow us on social media!

When can I take an internship? Our office supervises the Internship-for-Credit Program, which allows juniors, seniors and graduate students to gain experience in the workplace while earning 3 credits. Students become eligible for this program the summer after sophomore year. Non-credit internships are an option for U.S. students only and may be taken at any time during your four years at SVA, if your department permits doing so.

What resources are available at SVA to find internships and jobs? Students are advised to speak with their faculty and peers, consult the SVA Job Board and other online job boards, attend the various industry events on campus, submit work for portfolio reviews, join professional organizations and review written materials and video presentations provided by Career Development.

What is one thing I can do for my future career when I begin my studies at SVA? Aside from developing expertise in your area of study, consider your peers and all the people who make up the SVA community to be part of the network you are building. You want to make friends, be respectful, be a good collaborator and be someone who values relationships.
