Eyes on Japan – Japanische Ess- und Badekultur 9 JAPANISCHE ESS- UND BADEKULTUR In der japanischen Küche sind frische Zutaten ebenso ein Muss wie die sorgfältige Zubereitung, die Vielfalt der Speisen, ihr deko ratives Anrichten und die Berücksichtigung der Jahreszeiten sowie regionaler und lokaler Besonderheiten. Dass dies bereits vor Jahrhunderten der Fall war und die Bedeutung der Kochkunst für das menschliche Miteinander nicht unterschätzt werden darf, zeigt A TALE OF SAMURAI COOKING. Garréta, Supervisor, Chair ___________________________ Robyn Wiegman, Co-Chair ___________________________ Rey Chow ___________________________ Anne Allison An abstract of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate Program in Literature in the Graduate School of Duke University 2018 Copyright by Jui-an Chou 2018 Abstract “Between Boys: Fantasy of Male Homosexuality in Boys’ Love, Mary Renault, and Marguerite Yourcenar” examines an unexpected kinship between Boys’ Love, a Japanese male-on-male romance genre, and literary works by Mary Renault and Marguerite Yourcenar, two mid-twentieth century authors who wrote about male homosexuality. Following Eve Sedgwick, who proposed that a “rich tradition of cross- gender inventions of homosexuality” should be studied separately from gay and lesbian literature, this dissertation examines male homoerotic fictions authored by women. These fictions foreground a disjunction between authorial and textual identities in gender and sexuality, and they have often been accused of inauthenticity, appropriation, and exploitation.

Hoher Besuch aus England: Der neue Newsletter kommt mal wieder et- Kinotechnikspezialist was unpünktlich in Ihren Briefkasten (ob Duncan bei Laser Hotline elektronisch oder in Papierform) geflattert. Und das nicht ohne Grund. Denn just als wir die aktuelle Ausgabe beenden wollten, gab es einen Überraschungsbesuch aus England. Duncan McGregor, seines Zeichens Chefvor- führer des berühmten Pictureville Cinema in Bradford, nutzte seinen Urlaub in Deutsch- land zu einer Stippvisite bei der Laser Hotline in Korntal. Eigentlich logisch, dass es da nicht nur bei einer Stippvisite blieb, wo man sich doch soviel Neues aus der Welt des Films im Speziellen und der Kinotechnik im Besonderen zu erzählen hatte. Und unser Heimkino hatte es ihm ganz offensichtlich angetan. Der Sound gefiel dem Spezialisten so gut, dass er immer mehr sehen und vor allem hören wollte. Dieser Wunsch wurde ihm natürlich nicht verweigert. So kam es, dass der Newsletter etwas auf der Strecke blieb. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract The Japanese family has undergone significant upheavals since the late 20th century and this has had profound effects on cinematic representations. Contemporary filmmaker Koreeda Hirokazu has gained worldwide fame as a director of family dramas, many of which depict the family in contemporary social contexts. This thesis focuses on a selection of Koreeda’s films (and a TV series) termed the ‘family narratives’ (2011-2016) to determine how the representations of family and associated gender roles positively address social developments and anxieties. Recognising their broader role within sociological debates in Japan, this project asks, how do Koreeda’s family narratives function as a discourse on contemporary social anxieties related to family and gender? Evading traditional authorship methods, the critical framework relies on a range of approaches examining film as history (Standish 2000; Rosenstone 2012), the family on film (Harwood 1997) and the ‘social problem film’ to textually analyse the discursive role of Koreeda’s representations within socio-historical contexts.

    Ancient Greece and Rome in Videogames: Representation, Player Processes, and Transmedial Connections Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Ross Clare September 2018 Abstract Videogames are a hugely popular entertainment medium that plays host to hundreds of different ancient world representations. They provide very distinctive versions of recreated historical and mythological spaces, places, and peoples. The processes that go into their development, and the interactive procedures that accompany these games, must therefore be equally unique. This provides an impetus to both study the new ways in which ancient worlds are being reconfigured for gameplayers who actively work upon and alter them, and to revisit our conception of popular antiquity, a continuum within popular culture wherein ancient worlds are repeatedly received and changed in a variety of media contexts. This project begins by locating antiquity within a transmedial framework, permitting us to witness the free movement of representational strategies, themes, subtexts and ideas across media and into ancient world videogames. An original approach to the gameplay process, informed by cognitive and memory theory, characterises interaction with virtual antiquity as a procedure in which the receiver draws on preconceived notions and ideas of the ancient past to facilitate play. This notion of “ancient gameplay” as a reception process fed by general knowledges, previous pop-cultural engagements, and dim resonances of antiquity garnered from broad, informal past encounters allows for a wide, all-encompassing study of “ancient games”, the variety of sources they (and the player) draw upon, and the many experiences these games offer.
