The Critical Arabesque
Originalveröffentlichung in: Ruhl, Carsten ; Dähne, Chris ; Hoekstra, Rixt (Hrsgg.): The death and life of the total work of art : Henry van de Velde and the legacy of a modern concept, Berlin 2015, S. 195-216 THE CRITICAL ARABESQUE On Jean-Luc Godard's Nouvelle Vague (1990) Regine Prange The Motion Picture as a Total Work of Art The transformation of the proletarian penny arcades and nickelodeons into movie theaters that were also recognized by a middle-class audience was accompanied by the elaborate commercial construction of gigantic premiere houses, whose mag- nificent fa^ade design and fantastic and eclectic interior decor created experiential spaces that complemented the narrative space of the films being presented and exponentially increased their illusionistic effect. Siegfried Kracauer commented on those “palaces of distraction ” in 1926: 195 A glittering, revue-like creature has crawled out ofthe movies: the total artwork (Gesamt- kunstwerk) of ejfects. / This total artwork of effects assaults every one of the senses using every possible means. Spotlights shower their beams into the auditorium, sprinkling across festive drapes or rippling through colorful, growth-like glass fixtures. The orchestra asserts it- selfas an independentpower, its acousticproduction buttressed by the responsory ofthe light- ing. Every emotion is accorded its own acoustic expression, its color value in the spectrum —a visual and acoustic kaleidoscope which provides the settingfor the physical activity on stage: pantomime and ballet. Untilfinally the white surface descends and the events ofthe three- dimensional stage blend imperceptibly into two-dimensional illusions. 1 In addition to this critical perspective toward a “false totality ” of the movie the- ater that serves entertainment and is suggestive of the “upscale and sacral” of the art tradition, which, in Kracauer ’s opinion, contests the artistic independence of film, the metaphor of the total work of art is also employed for genuine cinematic art. -

For Immediate Release
For Immediate Release ELLENEllen Jacobs JACOBS Associates ASSOCIATES611 Broadway Suite 403 New York, NY 10012 USA T: 212.245.5100 F: 212.397.1102 [email protected] www.ejassociates.org photo by Alex Fabozzi LA MAMA PRESENTS WORLD PREMIERE OF ‘IMAGINING THE IMAGINARY INVALID,’ A MABOU MINES AND TRICK SADDLE PRODUCTION BASED ON MOLIERE’S ‘THE IMAGINARY INVALID,’ JANUARY 21-FEBRUARY 7 AT LA MAMA’S ELLEN STEWART THEATRE A classic Mabou Mines feat is to take a theatrical classic, reimagine it from top to bottom, then turn it inside out; the result is a production so spanking new that the original gleams with fresh and unexpected relevance. The tradition continues in a collaboration with Trick Saddle and the 45-year old company. The two companies combine forces in the world premiere of “Imagining the Imaginary Invalid,” inspired by “The Imaginary Invalid,” Moliere’s piercing satiric take on the pretension, gullibility and vulnerability of we poor mortals. Presented by La MaMa, a production of Mabou Mines and Trick Saddle, the play runs January 21-February 7 at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre. Conceived in 2012 by the beloved late actress/director Ruth Maleczech, one of the cofounders of the tradition-bending troupe, and her daughter Clove Galilee, Trick Saddle Co-Artistic Director and a Mabou Mines Associate Artist , who serves as the show’s director and choreographer, the radically reimagined and reworked classic has original text by Valeria Vasilevski and is adapted by Trick Saddle Co-Artistic Director Jenny Rogers. Adhering to the spirit of Trick Saddle’s use of unconventional settings , the play takes place backstage where the actors are preparing for their performance. -

Brooklyn, NY/May 10, 2013—From Friday, May 31 through Thursday, June 13, BAMcinématek presents a two-week run of Russian master Andrei Tarkovsky’s Nostalghia in a new 35mm print for its 30th anniversary, alongside Russian Cinema Now, a series showcasing contemporary films with special guests and Q&As. For more information on TransCultural Express, download the program press release. A metaphysical exploration of spiritual isolation and Russian identity, Tarkovsky’s (Solaris, Stalker) penultimate film Nostalghia (1983) follows Russian expat and misanthropic poet Andrei (Oleg Yankovsky, The Mirror) as he travels to Italy to conduct research on an 18th-century composer. In the course of his study, he is overcome by melancholy and a longing for his home country—a sentiment reflective of the exiled Tarkovsky’s own struggle with displacement, this being his first film made outside of the USSR (the film’s Italian title translates as “homesickness”). -

Welcome to Dead by Dawn! It’s sound advice to be more afraid of the living than the dead. Sure, the dead can kill you, but at least they’re easy to spot. In this year’s programme too many of the monsters will smile when they meet you, and will still be smiling when they lock you in a meat freezer. Or encourage you onto a ledge. Or offer to share their martini. You could try politely declining their kind offer, see how that works out... Dead by Dawn is a discovery festival which exists to showcase potential and vibrant emerging talent, but also aims to screen the widest possible range of what can be described as horror both in feature and short form. -
Vita Di Eduardo
